"Hmmmmm, something smells delicious. " I cooed as I climbed down the stairs and walked towards the kitchen, my stomach growling in anticipation.

"Of course it does." Mum agreed. Setting down a couple of plates on the table as I came around to stand beside her. "I made your favorite and it's a far cry from the peanut butter sandwich you practically live on when you're staying in that house of yours. "

I rolled up eyes good naturedly "Mum, I don't even like peanuts, or butter for that matter so what makes you think I'm going to like a combination of the two?"

"Hmmm..." She hummed thoughtfully. "Is that Aaron's favorite then? I get confused sometimes. "

At the sound of his name, I felt my stomach drop. All morning,  I had been trying to  put thoughts of him to rest and now all that progress was down the drain and it didn't take more than the mention of his name.

"Let me help you with that." I offered quickly, taking the bowl of salad from her hand and going to set it on the table. I needed a distraction from everything Aaron related, at least for now.

"So..." I began as mum came to take her seat at the table and we began eating our breakfast. I needed to steer the conversation as far away from Aaron as was humanly possible because knowing mum, she would probably find a way to make it about him again.

God she loved that boy way more than anyone was allowed to love a person,  and he wasn't even her real kid. I am her real kid, and yet she doesn't talk about me half as much.

"Any plans for the weekend?"

"Me? Well, Lucas is away for that conference in Spain so I'll be helping him out with some work while he's away."

At her response I almost laughed.

"Who are you and what have you done with my mother?"

"What do you mean?" She asked trying to act clueless.

"Oh don't give me that mum, everybody knows you hate office work."

"I don't hate it." She argued. "I just try not to make it the center of my whole life like you, Aaron,  and your father have. Besides, a girl has got to step up for her man from time to time eh? You wouldn't know anything about that though would you? Seeing as you've refused to get yourself a man "

I stiffened again at her comment. why did Aaron's name manage to pop up in every conversation today? Although that is not the only thing that bothered me.

Ten years had passed since mum married  Lucas Hill, but I still didn't know how I felt about referring him to him as my father. I guess I could get used to him being referred to as that by a third party but it would take a much longer time for me to start doing it myself...if I ever.

"Baby?" Mum called, probably noticing the fact that I had spaced out.

"You good?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." I replied, clearing my throat. "But I gotta go. Rosie's flight would be landing any minute now and I don't want her to have to wait for me."

"Alright honey, you run along now, and take your coffee with you."

"Thanks mum." I replied, smiling as I grabbed my coffee and turned it into a small flask.

"You tell Rosie that a lovely meal would be waiting for her once she arrives. "

That had me stopping dead in my tracks.

"Yeah about that..." I began hesitantly. "...Rosie's not going to be staying here."

"What? why?" Mum demanded. She looked physically wounded.

"Well, she rented out a suite so she can have her own space, also, she night be having friends over, and you know Rosie, she hates to be a bother. "

"But she never is." Mum sulked.

"Oh trust me, she will be when you have to attend to twenty new visitors every hour. She's got a lot of friends you know?"

"Lots of friends... and boyfriends." She responded giving me a knowing look. "She probably needs all that privacy so she can entertain them huh?"

"I know what you're doing mum." I replied while grabbing my keys from the counter. "And I refuse to allow you to trap me into this conversation. "

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Of course you don't." I returned,  but before she could get another word in, I was already out the door, calling over my shoulder to say that I loved her. If she said it back I couldn't tell because I was already in my car zooming off towards the airport.

The ride was an uneventful but fun one. Music was blasting loudly from the speakers and the my hair was flying in the wind as I sped down the road in my convertible. It was a gift from Lucas on my 24th birthday and me and this Baby had been inseparable ever since.

It took approximately 25 minutes for me to get to the airport and additional 5 minutes for me to spot Rosie.

It took another ten minutes for her numerous bags and boxes into the car. They obviously couldn't fit in mine so we had to order an uber.

"Girl, I thought you said you were only here for a week?" I asked.

"Yeah why?" She replied, turning me around so she could take a good look at me. "You're not looking so bad for someone who spends all her days cooped up in an office."

"Thank you Rosie, I love you too." I replied, ignoring her comment about me being cooped up in the office. I didn't spend all my time there, i had a life, kinda.

Before I could let my mind start spiraling,  I changed the topic.

"You say a week, but the amount of luggage you've brought suggests you might be here for at least one year."

"Oh please." She replied slapping me playfully. "A girl has gotta have options."

"I know that's right. " I concurred. "You look so good though." I cooed, turning her around so I could get a better look of my best friend then I pulled her into a tight hug before I started kissing her all over her face.

"Stop. Gross." She cried, trying to get me off her but she was laughing.

"Why? I've missed you so much."

"Yeah me too." She replied sincerely. "How long has it been?"

"6 years? Minus Christmas."

"Damn girl, that's almost equal to forever. Also, where did you get that tan? Girl your skin is glowing"

"Somwhere in Africa." She supplied with a proud smile. "My boo knows all the exotic locations for the best vacations."

"Your boo huh? Which one? The politician or the high profile lawyer?"

Rosie changed her men like she changed shirts, I honestly couldn't keep up.

"Girl, those ones are old stories now. My new boo owns a wine factory and the money is flowing." She declared in a dramatic sing song voice that had me bending over with laughter.

"You know what? Get in the car and you can tell me all about your wine boo on the way."

"Alrighty." She cooed excitedly as she hopped over into the car because God forbid that Rosie would act like a normal person and go in through the door.

"So, where did you meet him?" I asked as soon as we started druving.

"Who Kevin?"

So that was his name. Hmm, I'd remember to add it to the ever growing list of Rosie's conquests.

"We met at Luke's Inauguration party. "

"Wait Luke's the mayor right?"

"No that's ferdinard. Luke's DA."

"Oooh." I replied with so many names dancing in my head. "So you met your new boo at your old boo's party? That's not bonkers at all."

"I mean Luke and I were already on shaky ground anyway. He was becoming miserly in his spending and you know I can't deal with that. Besides the man is married,  too much drama there."

"And since when did you have problems with drama? Girl you live for that shit."

"You know me too well." She replied laughing. "but Kevin had too much potential,  I needed to focus."

I shook my head, amazed. "One of these days you're going to find a man whose going to sweep you off your feet and  lock you down and drag you to the altar. I'll gladly do the honors of being your maid of honor."

"The only way I'm getting dragged to any alter is if your hot stepbrother would be up there waiting for me.."

My mood soured immediately. "You really need to get over your obsession with that fool. Trust me you can do so much better."

"Than Aaron? No thank you. Have you seen him? That man is my soul mate. He just doesn't know it yet. But when he does,  he's going to realize that I'm the one he has been searching for his entire life."

I made a gagging sound that indicated how gross the conversation was getting. Rosie glared at me and I smiled inwardly but before she could make any comments,  I turned the corner and declared;

"We're here. Hotel De Luna"

"Wow! Its magnificent." Rosie cooed, her eyes widening to the size of saucers. And magnificent it was indeed, but I still had one very burning question.

"Who is paying for this?"

"Luke of course." She replied, still not taking her eyes off the hotel's grandeur.

"Oh good." I replied in relief, because I knew staying at a place like this would cost an arm and a leg. She could probably afford it and so could I, but i was of the opinion that only money that needed to be spent was worth spending.

That was the difference between Aaron and me. Where i was conservative in spending money,  he threw money around like a lavish prince who had no problems in life and that annoyed the hell out of me. Granted, everything he did annoyed me but some things more so than others.

Aaron's POVThe auction finally ended at about eleven thirty PM and by the time it was finally time for the gala proper, hundreds of art pieces which were worth hundreds of thousand dollars. The proceedings from the auction was supposed to be used to fund a specialized school for disabled children somewhere in the suburbs and that was the only reason why I even bothered to bid on anything. I hated art or rather, I didn't care much for it other than the aesthetic value to tended to provide. Jasmine also seemed to share a similar view and as far as my knowledge went about her, she didn't know jack about art, but she still ended up coughing up quite a lot of money and I needed no prophecy to tell me that the reason she did it was because she felt bad for those kids and she wanted to help them in any way she possibly could. My Jasmine was kindhearted like that. Her heart was pure and that was only one of the reasons I found her so attractive. I was an asshole on most days but today, I

Aaron's POV"Aaron...Aaron...""Yes? What?"As it turns out, Jasmine had been calling my name for the past few seconds and I hadn't even heard her. I was too busy getting lost in her appearance which was nothing if not divine. She was wearing a lovely red dress that hugged her body in all the right places, accentuating her curves so much so that I found myself getting a little jealous when I thought about the fact that other men were actually going to see her like that, a reaction that annoyed me to no end.Her hair was done in a sophisticated style, gathered upwards towards the crown of her head and most likely secured with lots and lots of bobby pins.Needless to say, she looked absolutely stunning and although I knew it was mostly, if not entirely Rosie's handiwork, the outcome was definitely worth it. I was surprised she even agreed to any of it in the first place. "Why are you staring at me like that?" She asked, smoothing out the front of her dress. "Is it that bad?"It brok

Aaron's POV.I am indeed a mess.Because how else would I explain that stupid shit I pulled earlier. I mean, i had absolutely no reason lie to Jasmine, but like I said, I couldn't really help myself in that moment. Over the years, I had built myself an extra layer of skin, taught myself to keep my distance from her even though all I wanted to do was hold her, be close to her, and never ever leave her.I had learned to engage in stupid arguments and pointless banter with her even though all I wanted was to whisper sweet nothings in her ears and tell her how beautiful she was and by God she had to be the most beautiful thing to ever walk this planet.Jasmine was the absolute love of my life, had been for the last decade at least and i didn't think that was ever going to change, but she hated my guts. I have no clue what I did wrong exactly but the more I tried to get close to her, the more I find out that the only type of conversation she would ever have with me is an argument, an

"Uh, this has to do with me. So I think I have a lot of choices, in fact.""You know what? You're right." She retorted."I am?" I asked, hardly believing my ears. It was indeed a rare occurrence that Rosie and I would agree on anything without us, first of all, getting into a battle of words. "Yes, you're right. You indeed have a lot of choices. But I'm here to make sure that you make the right one. "Okay, I'm not sure I follow." I confessed. Rosie sighed helplessly, looking at me like one would look at a child who didn't know their left from their right. And then, slowly, painstakingly slowly, she walked over to me and placed her hands on my shoulders. "Dream with me." she began, waving at something imaginary on the ceiling. "When you hear a charity gala, what comes to your mind?"" A bunch of snobbish people who have more money than they know what to do with and want to throw it around. Come to think of it, how much of the money actually goes to charity? I mean, there are starv

"I got busted," I cried to Rosie that evening as soon as I got home. I was barely through the door and my keys had scarcely made contact with the counter when I began my rant. Rosie looked at me in confusion, then slowly some sort of realization dawned on her and she gasped. "Look, I love you with everything I've got, but I would not help you hide the body. I refuse to become an accomplice to murdee." Now it was my turn to look at her in confusion. "What body, Rosie? What are you talking about?" She scratched her chin and smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, I got a little carried away. But just so we're clear, you didn't kill anybody, right?" "No, no, I didn't kill anybody Rosie, but I think I might...and soon too." I quickly tacked on, suddenly remembering the encounter I had had with Aaron just a couple of hours ago. "One day I'm going to just snap, lose all my control and strangle the very life out of him." Rosie chuckled, "What did Aaron do this time? And if you didn't kill somebod

"I...um...i....""I'm sorry what was that Jazz?" Aaron mocked. "Have you suddenly lost the ability to speak properly or has a cat got your tongue?""No, I can speak perfectly fine. "I replied defensively, trying to sound as unbothered as possible, but somehow, my voice still managed to quaver."And I already told you to stop calling me that.""That is such a pathetic attempt at a topic change." Aaron said in response and despite myself, I couldn't help but agree with him."...But since you're asking so nicely, " He continued. "maybe I can come up with a new nickname for you. So what do you think about spy, or dirty player...or wait I know just the one, snooper.""Look, just stop okay. I made a mistake. But what right do you have to judge me? I mean, it's not as if your methods have been entirely pure.""Oh really? Cuz I don't remember mobilizing any of your staff to spy on you for me.""It wasn't like that...not really. " I replied, my voice small.I hated being caught in the he

  • Hate me later, love me now   Chapter 14

"Okay? What do you have in mind? I'll do anything. You know I've had this feeling that Aaron doesn't like me much but if I can get some Intel on what he is working on, maybe I can offer some help that could get me in his good books. " She seemed so eager and I couldn't help but encourage her."My point exactly. I can tell you details on what he is working on and I can even give you the name address of his favorite restaurant so you can get him stress relief meals from there. Trust me he'll love you for it.Nicole seemed almost at the verge of tears now as she took my hands in hers and held it to her chest in gratitude. "How could I ever repay you?""Oh no no. I'm not doing this because I expect anything from you in return. I just really want you to be happy. " I lied and I felt horrible for it. "Although I wouldn't mind receiving a little Intel from time to time on Aaron's progress on the project. ""I...I'm not sure I understand. " she confessed. "Its quite simple actually. So y

  • Hate me later, love me now   Chapter 13

Usually, I dreaded Mondays and it was not because I didn't enjoy my work and definitely not because I didn't have a real passion for the job, but after an entire weekend without Aaron, going back into the office on Monday was always a little struggle while knowing fully well that he was going to be an unavoidable presence, ready to ruin my day and spoil my mood like he always does. But this Monday was different. I walked into the office with a skip in my step and a broad smile on my face. I was excited and ready to face the day, feeling positive about everything, because not only had I managed to bag my first client who generously invested five million naira into the company's latest orion project, I also knew that Aaron must have slept through the weekend and hadn't gotten himself any clients yet. And being ahead, being ahead of Aaron in particular, always made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside."Someone woke up on the right side of her bed this morning,' a voice said, and I recog

  • Hate me later, love me now   Chapter 12

i was always a morning person, developed that habit un college when I had to keep late nights and still start might day early in order to excel in my studies and although it paid off, I was still a little pissed that Aaron ended up becoming Valedictorian even though he partied and slept his way through college. Deciding that It was too early to ruin my day with thoughts of Aaron, i took a quick shower and went downstairs to prepare a sumptuous breakfast for Rosie. For starters, I knew she was going to be hungover considering how hard she must have partied last night, and I had to make something to make her feel better. Also, it was kind of like a bribe as well, because I know that she wasn't gonna let me get off so easily with leaving her behind at the club.Coffee was already brewing when she finally woke up. "Morning princess." i greeted in a sing song voice. "Morning." She replied, rubbing her eyes, still groouchy from sleep."Sleep well?"Yup." She replied absent mindedly bef
