Making an effort to look excited, Sylvia clapped her hands together as she saw Lydia and Liam kiss.
The wedding was held in a lavish garden. A canopy was set up decorated by foliage and various complementing flowers. Red roses, her mother’s favorite flower, was in abundance. Majestic and elegant floral accents beautified the venue.
In a white gorgeous dress, coupled with that hours long make up routine, her mother appeared youthful and stunning. Opposite to her was Liam standing in a black suit, appearing regal and charismatic.
Sylvia was at awe, thinking about the amount spent behind it.
However, seeing how this was a wedding out of her mother’s dream, it seemed that Liam genuinely cared for Lydia— at least that’s the impression she got.
What was off putting for Sylvia happened to be the number of bodyguards. Dressed in black suits, they were assigned all over the venue and on a look out. This did imply whether Liam was paranoid or his life needed constant protection.
Sylvia believed the case to be the latter, and this was her nth time thinking nothing good came out of mixing with the wealthy.
Her eyes wandered off in a search of a certain blue eyed man, Blake Knight— son of Liam Knight and her new stepbrother.
The thought of that made her grimace, knowing how attractive she found the man. Of course, Sylvia forced herself to not delve into the matter, believing the temporary infatuation was due to his visuals alone. Moreover, nothing good would come from pursing this.
Blake Knight wasn’t present. This didn’t surprise Sylvia even though she held slight anticipation.
The fireworks went off following that, catching her attention, and she stared at the burst of colors in the sky, sincerely praying this would work out for her mother.
Once the wedding was over, the socializing started.
Not knowing anyone here, it would be a wonder if Sylvia didn’t feel awkward. Seated on her chair, she took out her phone and scrolled through it in order to keep her occupied. Before she could take out her earphones, two women approached her.
Sylvia raised her head questioningly, wondering if she should stand up. Both the women were in their middle ages, and in order to not create issues, Sylvia stood.
“We are Liam’s cousin sister. I am Janice, and she is Mirabella,” the woman introduced, adorning a smile on her face.
Sylvia assessed both of them and had a feeling they were up to no good.
“I am Sylvia, Sylvia White.”
Janice laughed. “White? You’re a Knight now. You should be happy about it, right?”
“Exactly. My cousin brother had been admired by women all over the country. I wonder how he ended up at the hands of Lydia. She must be experienced to capture my brother.”
The mock couldn’t be more clear in their tone, and Sylvia felt bored about dealing with this. She understood where they wanted to go from there.
Sylvia answered, “Well, love can’t be explained.”
“Love?” Janice sneered. “Sorry, my brother had never been the one to invest in love. I truly wonder how special your mother is. I heard how she mesmerized countless men before my brother. It must be of my brother’s good luck that he was the one who ended up with her.”
Sylvia swept her eyes over to her mother who was smiling at Liam and wanted to question why did she had to deal with Lydia’s in-laws.
“My brother is inexperienced in this field. That’s why, we were all afraid of him getting tricked by a devious and crafty woman for his wealth,” Mirabella expressed her concerns.
Sylvia really felt baffled and had the urge to comment on how Liam wasn’t a baby! Even if they presented thousands of proofs in front of her, Sylvia would never believe he could be manipulated.
Sylvia shamelessly responded, “You needn’t worry then. My mother is totally not that type; she is someone who had been hurt too much by the past.”
It didn’t go unnoticed by her how the women clenched their jaws, and Sylvia realized that she chose wrong words. Communicating with these snarky women wasn’t her talent!
“Is that so? What about you? Will you be staying with your mother? Wouldn’t it be odd for you to consider Liam as your father?” Mirabella inquired.
Was there a need to identify Liam as her father? In Sylvia’s eyes, he was merely Lydia’s husband, and they shouldn’t have any associations with each other.
“Maybe? I am not so sure about it. I have to think about this.”
“Thinking about it, Blake, that child really loved his mother. He shouldn’t be too happy with this. Right. Did he give you hard time?” Janice voiced out with a sigh whilst feigning to show concern for Sylvia.
“Isn’t it normal to feel displeased at this situation? Even I wasn’t happy to learn about my mother marrying,” Sylvia lied smoothly.
°°°
A groan escaped from her mouth as she stepped out of the washroom and wiped her hand with a tissue before complaining, “Ah! Those old ladies, am I the one who got married? Why did I have to get targeted? Confront Mom if you have the courage! Geez! Attacking a teenager— Oh my god!”
Sylvia exclaimed upon seeing the teenager leaning against the washroom. He took out the cigarette from his mouth and stared at her intensely— most likely with hatred. Ignoring the thoughts of how attractive he looked, she stared at him cautiously.
It seemed that he was in the wedding.
Why did she not see him earlier?
She thought for a second about striking up a conversation with him, but the hostility repelled her, and deciding it would be of best to walk off, she turned the other way when screams ran through the venue.
“Fire!”
This made Sylvia raise her head, and she saw the smokes arising. The commotion increased as everyone began to run away, and Sylvia was about to check out on the situation when she heard the man say, “A wedding gift.”
Shocked, Sylvia looked at Blake. A dangerous glint was present in his eyes while a smirk sat on his face. Chills travelled down her spine. This man was an utter psychopath.
“What? You are behind this?” She was still unable to process this. Even if he was against it, no sane person would take such measures.
Staring at her with unadulterated ridicule, he turned away and was about to leave when Sylvia grabbed his wrist. At that, he faced her with those unfriendly cold eyes.Sylvia froze. She didn’t understand what gave her the courage to stop him.Her throat felt dry as she voiced out, “Explain. Did you set the fire.”He shook off her hand and looked at her as though she was something filthy prior to scowling and uttering, “Don’t touch me.”Then, he stepped closer to her. His breath that fell on her face caused her heart to beat rapidly, and he said, “This is merely the beginning.”His threat made her blood go cold, knowing he meant each of those words. Sylvia didn’t have the desire to deal with the fire and decided to not move in at Liam’s place. Her mother can deal with this on her own.Reaching into a conclusion, she nodded her head and then smiled at him.“I will stay out of your way. You can have my Mom if you want,” she honestly vocalized, not exactly worried about the women. He snee
Sylvia woke up in cold sweats after dreaming of being shot at by Blake. Immediately sitting up on the bed following that, she patted on her chest to calm her rapidly beating heart. This was the first time she had seen a gun in action in real life, and the target had been her as well. It was scary to think of what could have happened if the trajectory of bullet had been different. Then, she heard the knocks, leading her to collect herself and get down from the bed before going over to open the door. Stood before her was a woman in her mid forties, dressed in an uniform. She was most probably a maid here.“Ms. Sylvia, you have been called for breakfast downstairs,” she enunciated. The formal tone caused the corner of her lips to twitch, and she voiced out, “Just stick with Sylvia. Give me five minutes. I will wash up.”°°°Walking into the dining room, she saw her mother feeding Liam, and seeing how the man complied along with it caused Sylvia to feel disgusted at them for not acting th
Her shift was over. After closing up, Sylvia looked forward to having a comfortable night’s sleep without feeling terrorized.Grabbing the trash bag, she dragged it out when she was met with a shock. A gasp escaped from her lips as she took a step back at the dark silhouette. On a careful inspection, she recognized him to be brooding teenager she wanted to seriously avoid. What was he doing here?“Get on,” he ordered. Sylvia noticed his bike that was parked in the alleyway.Confusion and speechless crossed over her face. Did he seriously think she would get on because he said so?His tone wasn’t even friendly neither did she know him well. Moreover, the way he treated her previously was enough of a reason for her to stay cautious. The corner of her lips twitched. She wanted to ask whether or not he had gone nuts but held back her tongue. She didn’t want to unnecessarily add more to her overflowing plate.“I have to clean up inside,” Sylvia responded. Placing the trash bag inside, she
Right now, Sylvia believed that it would have been better if he had left her behind with those raucous and unruly youngsters.Although they didn’t look safe, at least Sylvia would have been able to think of a way to get to her safety. But now, sitting beside Blake while holding tightly on to her seatbelt, she hardly saw the lights of safety. She prayed desperately that a hint of mercy would emerge in Blake’s heart, and he would let her go.However, until now, there was no signs of it. In fact, he seemed to be enjoying the terror on her face as he wildly drove through the roads, barely caring about the rules. What was worse that she could smell the alcohol on him.One of the last thing Sylvia saw herself participating in was street racing. As someone who paid atmosphere care to the preservation of her life, why would she even think of taking part in something dangerous? She wasn’t nuts to risk her life for a moment of thrill. However, the teenage boy next to her didn’t share thoughts o
As much as Sylvia wanted to hold on her pride and walk away from the scene, that domineering voice made her instantly halt, making her curse inside. She hated for being this intimidated. But then again, she couldn’t be blamed. If Blake could casually carry around a gun, who knew what his father, who appeared at least ten times more intimidating, could do?Sylvia turned back to flash the man a forced smile.“Is there anything you needed, Liam?” she asked.“Get in the car,” he ordered.Sylvia knew it would be best for her to nor argue, but being thrashed around like a rag doll made her feel annoyed.“No, thank you,” she responded.Of course, it was crazy for her to go back from this area. It was dangerous, and she couldn’t trust a cab at here. Even if she got murdered here, finding evidences would be difficult. But right then, she didn’t care. She would manage just like she always did.His eyes narrowed on her, having a bone-chilling effect on her.“I wasn’t asking. Get in unless you wa
The second those words left her mouth, she found the tension in the car thicken further. From the corner of her eyes, she spotted the faint amusement that crossed Blake’s eyes.“No.”His tone left no space for argument.“You can't—”Before she could continue, he interrupted, “I am your guardian until you’re eighteen.”She gaped at that. Her mother was supposed to be her guardian. She transferred or shared the rights with Liam? Was that even legal? They weren’t related, and she didn’t obviously agree to this. Her eyes fell on his intense ones in the rearview mirror, and this kept her mouth shut. She will deal with her mother on this. The woman was to be blamed.°°°“Mom,” she called after Liam left for work the next morning. She spotted the woman in garden, talking with the housekeeper. Her glaring eyes caused her mother to stop the conversation and dismiss the housekeeper. Huffing, Sylvia stomped over to the woman. She knew that if she wasn’t serious and angry enough, the word wouldn’
“I applied for school. I should be getting the response in two to three days,” Sylvia responded.Because of the amount of times they changed places, Sylvia was used to this, and as her mother can not be counted on, Sylvia took it upon her shoulders to be responsible. Her mother couldn’t care less on whether or not she was receiving proper education.“Forget about that. I already arranged for you to be a student at Regal High. You will be starting from next week,” he informed. That name made Sylvia almost lose her balance. She looked at the man with utter shock. It stood to reason why she acted this way, considering how prestigious the high school was. Only the top and selected few were able to attend it.Regardless of how disconnected Sylvia was from the society, she wasn’t foreign to the name Regal High, and this had to do with how widespread the fame of academy went.Sure, the quality of education was impressive, but the glamour that attracted the public were the students. The stude
Sylvia felt nauseated when she woke up early to get dressed for school. She spent two days researching on students from Regal High, and this was more than enough for her to get an understanding on how fashionable her future classmates would be. On top of that, they spoke eloquently and elegantly. Her clothing would surely make her feel out of place, considering how they were not only made from cheap material, they were out of fashion as well.Sylvia shook her head. It wasn’t that she particularly cared about the impression she left on her classmates; it was just that she didn’t wish to stick out like a sore thumb. Sylvia preferred to blend with the surroundings. However, her distress was solved when her mother knocked her door, and she held a set of clothing for Sylvia. This made Sylvia raise an eyebrow at the women. Due to the recent incidents, Lydia and Sylvia’s relationship was tense.“What are you doing here?” Sylvia coldly asked.“A beautiful outfit,” her mother responded, “I tho
