Staring at her with unadulterated ridicule, he turned away and was about to leave when Sylvia grabbed his wrist. At that, he faced her with those unfriendly cold eyes.
Sylvia froze. She didn’t understand what gave her the courage to stop him.
Her throat felt dry as she voiced out, “Explain. Did you set the fire.”
He shook off her hand and looked at her as though she was something filthy prior to scowling and uttering, “Don’t touch me.”
Then, he stepped closer to her. His breath that fell on her face caused her heart to beat rapidly, and he said, “This is merely the beginning.”
His threat made her blood go cold, knowing he meant each of those words. Sylvia didn’t have the desire to deal with the fire and decided to not move in at Liam’s place. Her mother can deal with this on her own.
Reaching into a conclusion, she nodded her head and then smiled at him.
“I will stay out of your way. You can have my Mom if you want,” she honestly vocalized, not exactly worried about the women.
He sneered.
“Pathetic,” he commented.
“Good luck in trying to get my Mom to leave. She can be, well, pretty clingy,” Sylvia said before fleeing away from that scene.
What attractive!? She must be nuts to think of the psychopath like that!
°°°
Everyone was evacuated from the venue after the fire spread, and unfortunately, due to widespread damage, the event was cut short.
Liam was beyond mad. The thick tension in the car and his clenched jaw was enough to indicate that. On the other hand, her mother wore a pout, clearly upset by how her dream wedding was ruined.
Sylvia held in her urge to roll her eyes at her mother’s immature attitude.
Seated beside the driver, Sylvia took out her phone and began to scroll through it when Liam’s phone rang. From the rear-view mirror, she saw his face darken as he received the call.
“Found him?”
“If he resists, tie him up and drag him to the mansion.”
Sylvia shuddered at the fierce tone. Seeing how he raised his eyes to stare at rear-view, Sylvia felt as if she got caught and turned to hurriedly look the other way. Her heart beat rapidly in her chest due to nervousness.
°°°
Sylvia was astounded by the large mansion that stood proudly before her. The lawn was neatly maintained, and she could somewhat spot the garden behind the mansion. The guards stood at their positions, wearing a stern expression, and each of them were armed.
Once again, she wondered the identity of Liam.
She followed the housekeeper into the mansion. Her mother hurried away with Liam by pulling him along. Struck with wonder, she felt intimidated by the grand place.
Soon enough, she was led to her room. The room was large and had two quarters. One was for her sleeping, and the other served for other purposes. Seeing the shades of silver and blue around the room, Sylvia wondered if her mother was behind this.
“If you need anything, Miss Sylvia, simply ring the bell, and a maid will be at your service.”
Hearing the word maid caused the corner of her lips to twitch.
“Yes, I understand. Thank you.”
With that, the housekeeper left, and Sylvia was by herself to look around the room. No expenses were spared in decorating the room, and seeing a canvas that was placed at one corner of the room, she felt excited.
A shelf holding various colors of paint and many types of brushes was beside it.
“Whoa! This man is generous!” Sylvia commented.
Eager to try out the supplies, she started to sketch an outline on the white canvas. Searching for an inspiration, she thought back to those fierce blue eyes, and all of a sudden, she found her hand having its own mind.
She badly wanted to paint Blake despite how wrong it felt. After much contemplation, she decided that this was a must because of how perfectly carved his features were. It wasn’t as if he would ever find out about it.
Therefore, with much guilt which was soon overtaken by excitation, she started to draw his picture. Busy with that, she hardly noticed the time as it passed by. Only when the hunger crawled at the pit of her stomach did she stop her actions.
She stared at the half finished product on the canvas, and it was a pity that she would not be able to do justice to his visuals. Nonetheless, she had to admit that she did a great job at drawing the details in those attractive eyes of his.
Deciding to pause the drawing for a while to get something to eat, she placed a white clothing on the canvas to cover it and looked at the time. It was one in the night, and doubting anyone would be awake at this time, she decided to not ring the bell.
She didn’t want anyone to wake up for the sake of her hunger.
Earlier, the housekeeper showed her where the kitchen was, and she decided to grab something edible from there. Letting out a yawn, she stretched her arms before walking over to the door and opening it.
Stepping outside, she shuddered at how eerily silent the grand mansion was. The dim lighting made it further scary. Sylvia thought about going back to her room. She wasn’t good with horror.
However, she reasoned with herself on how heavily guarded the place was and not to entertain these absurd ideas whilst walking out of the hallway. As she was about to make her way over to the staircase, she heard two sets of voices.
Creases appeared between her eyebrows as she looked down from the railings. Upon squinting her eyes, she realized that the two people were Liam and Blake. That’s when, the slap resonated through the mansion.
Seeing how harshly Liam slapped Blake— enough to get Blake to stumble— a gasp escaped from her lips. The silent surrounding carried her voice well, and not wanting to be in a compromising position, she instantly bent down to hide behind the railings.
“Who is there?” asked Liam.
Sylvia’s heart drummed against her chest and hoped to get out of this situation unnoticed. Just as she was cursing at her stomach on choosing to get hungry at this timing, the sound of bullet being fired resounded.
Before Sylvia could react, she felt a sharp pain in her arm due to the bullet grazing against the area before it embedded itself in the wall behind her. Sylvia fell back at that.
Shock was clear on her features as she grabbed on to her wounded arm. Because of how new this was to her, it took her a while to process this before she revealed herself, not wanting to get shot at again.
Standing up, she noticed both Liam and Blake were looking at her. Blake held on to a gun, and if she wasn’t the victim of it, she would find him charming. Her throat felt dry, and she stared at them in fear.
Who were they actually? Just who fired bullets at will like this?
Her features paled, and she let out an almost inaudible apology before rushing away.
Blake scoffed upon seeing her running away figure.
“How pathetic!”
Sylvia woke up in cold sweats after dreaming of being shot at by Blake. Immediately sitting up on the bed following that, she patted on her chest to calm her rapidly beating heart. This was the first time she had seen a gun in action in real life, and the target had been her as well. It was scary to think of what could have happened if the trajectory of bullet had been different. Then, she heard the knocks, leading her to collect herself and get down from the bed before going over to open the door. Stood before her was a woman in her mid forties, dressed in an uniform. She was most probably a maid here.“Ms. Sylvia, you have been called for breakfast downstairs,” she enunciated. The formal tone caused the corner of her lips to twitch, and she voiced out, “Just stick with Sylvia. Give me five minutes. I will wash up.”°°°Walking into the dining room, she saw her mother feeding Liam, and seeing how the man complied along with it caused Sylvia to feel disgusted at them for not acting th
Her shift was over. After closing up, Sylvia looked forward to having a comfortable night’s sleep without feeling terrorized.Grabbing the trash bag, she dragged it out when she was met with a shock. A gasp escaped from her lips as she took a step back at the dark silhouette. On a careful inspection, she recognized him to be brooding teenager she wanted to seriously avoid. What was he doing here?“Get on,” he ordered. Sylvia noticed his bike that was parked in the alleyway.Confusion and speechless crossed over her face. Did he seriously think she would get on because he said so?His tone wasn’t even friendly neither did she know him well. Moreover, the way he treated her previously was enough of a reason for her to stay cautious. The corner of her lips twitched. She wanted to ask whether or not he had gone nuts but held back her tongue. She didn’t want to unnecessarily add more to her overflowing plate.“I have to clean up inside,” Sylvia responded. Placing the trash bag inside, she
Right now, Sylvia believed that it would have been better if he had left her behind with those raucous and unruly youngsters.Although they didn’t look safe, at least Sylvia would have been able to think of a way to get to her safety. But now, sitting beside Blake while holding tightly on to her seatbelt, she hardly saw the lights of safety. She prayed desperately that a hint of mercy would emerge in Blake’s heart, and he would let her go.However, until now, there was no signs of it. In fact, he seemed to be enjoying the terror on her face as he wildly drove through the roads, barely caring about the rules. What was worse that she could smell the alcohol on him.One of the last thing Sylvia saw herself participating in was street racing. As someone who paid atmosphere care to the preservation of her life, why would she even think of taking part in something dangerous? She wasn’t nuts to risk her life for a moment of thrill. However, the teenage boy next to her didn’t share thoughts o
As much as Sylvia wanted to hold on her pride and walk away from the scene, that domineering voice made her instantly halt, making her curse inside. She hated for being this intimidated. But then again, she couldn’t be blamed. If Blake could casually carry around a gun, who knew what his father, who appeared at least ten times more intimidating, could do?Sylvia turned back to flash the man a forced smile.“Is there anything you needed, Liam?” she asked.“Get in the car,” he ordered.Sylvia knew it would be best for her to nor argue, but being thrashed around like a rag doll made her feel annoyed.“No, thank you,” she responded.Of course, it was crazy for her to go back from this area. It was dangerous, and she couldn’t trust a cab at here. Even if she got murdered here, finding evidences would be difficult. But right then, she didn’t care. She would manage just like she always did.His eyes narrowed on her, having a bone-chilling effect on her.“I wasn’t asking. Get in unless you wa
The second those words left her mouth, she found the tension in the car thicken further. From the corner of her eyes, she spotted the faint amusement that crossed Blake’s eyes.“No.”His tone left no space for argument.“You can't—”Before she could continue, he interrupted, “I am your guardian until you’re eighteen.”She gaped at that. Her mother was supposed to be her guardian. She transferred or shared the rights with Liam? Was that even legal? They weren’t related, and she didn’t obviously agree to this. Her eyes fell on his intense ones in the rearview mirror, and this kept her mouth shut. She will deal with her mother on this. The woman was to be blamed.°°°“Mom,” she called after Liam left for work the next morning. She spotted the woman in garden, talking with the housekeeper. Her glaring eyes caused her mother to stop the conversation and dismiss the housekeeper. Huffing, Sylvia stomped over to the woman. She knew that if she wasn’t serious and angry enough, the word wouldn’
“I applied for school. I should be getting the response in two to three days,” Sylvia responded.Because of the amount of times they changed places, Sylvia was used to this, and as her mother can not be counted on, Sylvia took it upon her shoulders to be responsible. Her mother couldn’t care less on whether or not she was receiving proper education.“Forget about that. I already arranged for you to be a student at Regal High. You will be starting from next week,” he informed. That name made Sylvia almost lose her balance. She looked at the man with utter shock. It stood to reason why she acted this way, considering how prestigious the high school was. Only the top and selected few were able to attend it.Regardless of how disconnected Sylvia was from the society, she wasn’t foreign to the name Regal High, and this had to do with how widespread the fame of academy went.Sure, the quality of education was impressive, but the glamour that attracted the public were the students. The stude
Sylvia felt nauseated when she woke up early to get dressed for school. She spent two days researching on students from Regal High, and this was more than enough for her to get an understanding on how fashionable her future classmates would be. On top of that, they spoke eloquently and elegantly. Her clothing would surely make her feel out of place, considering how they were not only made from cheap material, they were out of fashion as well.Sylvia shook her head. It wasn’t that she particularly cared about the impression she left on her classmates; it was just that she didn’t wish to stick out like a sore thumb. Sylvia preferred to blend with the surroundings. However, her distress was solved when her mother knocked her door, and she held a set of clothing for Sylvia. This made Sylvia raise an eyebrow at the women. Due to the recent incidents, Lydia and Sylvia’s relationship was tense.“What are you doing here?” Sylvia coldly asked.“A beautiful outfit,” her mother responded, “I tho
The door to her first class was open, and she nervously slipped in. Her eyes scanned over the students gathered in the classroom. Chatters went on between them, and Sylvia quietly walked over to the seat in the back, sitting down carefully.Dramatically, all of a sudden, silence fell in the classroom, and Sylvia now had multiple pairs of eyes directed towards her. Each showed varying emotions— ranging from shock to amusement. Being the center of attention made Sylvia feel awkward, and she arched up her eyebrows questioningly. The girl seated before her turned to face Sylvia. Her auburn hair was neatly braided, and a pair of glasses sat above her small nose. Faint freckles spread over her cheeks, making her appear cute. She spoke out, “You must be new. That seat—”Before she could carry on, the girl beside her interrupted her.“What Marie was saying is that welcome! Your face is certainly one that I don’t recognize. So, who are you?”A bright smile sat on her face, but Sylvia found tho
