"Yes, Mother. Besides, we need to start making preparation on the appointment with Mr. Worthington."

The feminine tone quickly ascended into a delight. "That's right, son," retorted a cheerful Mrs. Ashford. "Oh, goodness. Can't believe this is finally happening."

"Yes, mother."

"I'm sure Jaden and his sister can now rest with trying to make you look like the bad one in the picture. But you have to promise to limit the way you squander the company's funds. It's getting way too much I'm afraid I can't help you any longer with the board. And I want to believe you know the Worthington's tower would want accountability at the end of the day especially now that our partnership success is just by the corner. It's the only way to revive the company."

"Sure, mother."

"And as for that ungrateful bitch, she'd be hearing from me by sunrise," she vowed, " But I need a good night rest now. It's been quite a stressful day."

What?! The company's drowning? Amelia thought to herself. And why would Hector be stealing money meant for the company?

The sound of the door creaking open made Amelia took to her heels, racing down the stairs in no time.

Following a successful exit from the mansion, Amelia couldn't help but think about her life following Mrs. Ashford's return. It wasn't like she was new to her maltreatment and constant contempt but why does it seem like her asking for a divorce is some sort of crime that she needs to get punished for?

Nevertheless, Amelia shoved the thought aside, hastening her pace. For the only way for her to find out, is to make sure to return by 3.a.m before the devil and his mother finally wakes up!

~~

The loud Jazz music pulsed through the air, a sultry melody that seemed to match the rhythm of the flashing spotlights. The vibrant energy of the crowd was infectious. Couples swayed to the music, their bodies moving in perfect sync as they lost themselves in the night. The air was thick with laughter, clinking glasses, and the murmur of hushed conversations, creating an atmosphere that was equal parts intimate and exhilarating. Amidst the revelry, Amelia navigated the crowd with practiced ease before finally clocking in at the bar.

"Girl, what kept you so long?" Trisha, her colleague at the bar said. "Boss's been looking all over for you."

"Mr. Nelson?"

"Right. There's an important guest in the building and he wants no one but you to make the delivery to him."

"'Him?" Amelia queried with an incredulous neck jut. "Who is 'him'?"

"I have no idea but I strongly believe he's someone of great societal value. More like an elite, if you ask me."

Just as she resumed her duty at the bar, Amelia couldn't help but wonder why Mr. Nelson would want to make her take the drink over instead.

She understands that it's a clubhouse and there's need for a certain level of appeal to be able to thrive there but she's mentioned to him umpteen times that she was married and would rather prefer to be at the bar instead. She has been wooed at several times while at it and she just needed that focus to be able to gather enough money and be free from Hector's shackles. That's all.

"Thank goodness, you're here," Mr. Nelson's voice spoke out of nowhere. "I've been looking all over for you, Amelia—"

"Mr. Nelson..."

"I know. I know Amelia. But I promise after today's delivery at the private lounge, it's going to be the last. You're going to keep staying at the bar like our former agreement. But it's Mr. Worthington we're talking about. I need to give it my all. I don't want to ruin this for him or me. Your presence bring magic to the house and I just couldn't trust no one with this but you, Amelia."

Amelia sighed heavily before making her response known. Mr. Nelson has been nothing but kind to her after she went back to the clubhouse following the unfortunate incidence with Hector. She had gone to the clubhouse with the her palm wounds still fresh. Hector doesn't care if she caught an infection through it and had forsaken her to herself to cater for. Mr. Nelson had felt pity for her and had personally paid for her treatment, rejecting her plea that the money be removed from her work in advance.

"Just this once, Mr. Nelson. Please."

"Just this once, Amelia."

"Alright then," she straightened her shoulders. "What's the menu?"

"Champagne with plenty of ice. Cosmopolitan and everything exotic and expensive."

Amelia poured some cosmopolitan drink into a tall glass and together with the champagne bottle, she went to deliver the orders at a private lounge in the club.

It's been only her eighth day at the club and for someone with no prior experience with making cocktails or mixology, she was quick enough as always to be able to learn to perfection within just four days of starting.

Amelia was greeted with soft warm and dotted lights in the cozy lounge. Her gaze caught two men who seem to be so engrossed in their own conversations, sitting opposite each other.

Their dress of plain ash cashmere and pant trousers didn't speak much of anything wealth or riches but the strong perfume aroma emanating from them proved her otherwise. To Amelia, they were more like the quiet rich folks.

"Hello, sirs," she let out a smile that unintentionally revealed her perfect dimples, "here's your drink," she said as she placed the orders in the tray on the table between them. "Would you like anything, else or?"

"No, we're fine. Thank you," one of the men thanked her, but somehow, the other man's gaze caught a glimpse of her bandaged palm. His eyes unknowingly travelled to her face.

"You," he mumbled as his eyes shone in disbelief, unable to believe them.

Amelia paused to take a long look at the man and even though she was just meeting him for the first time, she couldn't deny that the man's face seemed sort of familiar, somehow.

Where did she remember him from?

"Don't you dare fucking touch my child, Sharon," Amelia warned sternly, pointing as she bellowed at her with Aria cowering behind her mother. "You mean your ugly bastard of a child you had with another man only to force down Hector's throat!" she retorted. "Hey, you little rat," her neck stretched to behind Amelia as if hoping to catch a glimpse of Aria. "Come right here and take this dish away to the sink and wash before you set foot outside of this mansion. Or else you won't be leaving for school this morning." She then turned to Amelia. "If your mother didn't train you well enough to know that you wait for an adult to finish their meal and wash their plates for them before you do anything else, I will." Angel only stood aside, brawling her eyes out like a child she was. "I told you I will when I return from getting them on the school bus, Sharon. How can you expect a child to do all of those dishes when she's just two minutes away from getting left behind by the school bus?"

"Relax Jaden," Hailey said softly, her voice steady as she tried to ease the tension in the room. "I know you're still upset, but I’m sure there are other ways we can expose him without rushing into anything. It’s just unfortunate that he turned out to be smarter than we expected." She reached out, placing the glass of water into his hand, then rested her other hand lightly on his shoulder and gave it a gentle, reassuring pat. "And that’s exactly what gets under my skin more than anything else about him," he said, voice tight with frustration. "It’s not just that he had made a fool of everyone. He had deliberately went behind our backs and set up that call with Mr. Worthington, all while pretending he was trying to help. And the worst part? The reason the company is drowning right now is because of him in the first place!" He seized the glass of water, tipped it back and swallowed the contents quickly, barely pausing for breath. With a sharp, irritated motion he slammed the em

"What did you just say, Amelia?" The words left him barely above a whisper, but she heard them anyway. He rose to his feet with a deliberate quiet, the kind that made the room feel smaller. His legs carried him toward her, stiff with an ache that had nothing to do with age, and everything to do with the violence she could already feel coiled in the space between them. Amelia didn't need him to raise a hand to know it was coming. She was sure of it. Amelia's eyes darted around instead. "I said what I said Hector." "How dare you?! Did you just talk back at me?" The question was quiet, almost casual, but the air went thin around it. He lifted a single finger and tapped it against his chest, once, twice, like he was making sure she understood exactly who she’d challenged. The gesture was small. Precise. And it made Amelia’s throat close up" Amelia red-rimmed eyes met his. And in them, Hector saw a flicker of defiance for the first time. One he had never seen in her. One that se

"Cut the crap, Amelia," the blonde viper spat, her voice sharp enough to slice through the ceiling and rattle the chandeliers. "Don’t even try to lie to my face right now. You were at the club tonight. I saw you with my own two eyes — right there at Velour. I’m absolutely sure of it." That bitch! She clearly had spilled to Hector. "Velour?" Amelia repeated. The word sounded rather foreign on her tongue as her brows knitted together in a frown. Her eyes darted between them, searching for an explanation that wasn’t there. "I have no idea what you’re talking about, Sharon. And how on earth could I have been there when you both literally just woke me up right now?" She gestured vaguely at herself, robe still wrapped tight. "I was dead asleep until you came knocking." Sharon rolled her eyes. Hector sighed. He noticed the disorientation on her face and couldn't help but speak. "She probably doesn't even know that kind of place exist, Sharon. Exotic places like that isn't where peo

Amelia couldn't believe it. She'd looked at Alex and seen something rare— restraint, decency, respect, the kind of man who actually listened when a woman spoke. A gentleman. She'd been wrong. Because gentlemen don't ignore the word 'husband.' Gentlemen don't let their eyes drag over your face like that after you'd told them you belonged to someone else. Yet here he was, doing exactly that. Flirting. Openly. Effortlessly. Like her marriage was a rumor he refused to believe. He seemed so good at it without even trying and Amelia just couldn't help but scoff. "Luv?" she arched her brow interrogatively. "Of course... we are friends, right?" Amelia only saw a flicker of interest in his eyes as she looked him deep in the eye. She knew very well the game he was playing and no amount of endearment from him would make her succumb to say anything. Not anymore! Stupid. That's what she must have looked like. Helpless and stupid, collapsing into Alex's arms like he was s

She must have looked pitiful. Mascara smudged, lip trembling, but even her ruined makeup couldn’t hide how pretty her face was. He took her clamped hands and helped her off the floor, gently guiding her back to the couch. His grip was firm, but not rough. His hands wiped her tears. Calloused. Gentle. Then he pulled her head against his chest — hard muscle under dress shirt — and held her in an urgent, crushing embrace. "She won’t, Amelia,'' he said, voice low against her hair. "I promise. I’ll protect you from her and everything in-between. You are safe with me." Protect? The word snagged in her ribs. Did he just swear to protect a married woman? Her? Minutes passed and Amelia's breathing finally slowed. He handed her water without asking. The glass was cold. "Thank you." He didn’t answer. He only pursed his lips and nodded gently whilst he just watched her. His stare was heavy, fixed on the glass in her hand as if he could read every thought ricocheting through h

"I'm...sorry, sir. Do I know you from somewhere?" No way, he said mentally. His eyes locked on her as they raked her from head to toe. He saw what he saw but couldn't just tell apart. The lady in front of him seemed quite different from how he remembered her at the store the other time. More
