Chapter 5

Author: Windswept
"Come on. Let's check if they accidentally removed your brain the last time you were hospitalized."

Josie's protests echoed down the hallway.

"My brain is just fine! Simon, let me explain. Having a stepmom has three major benefits! First, if Dad gets married, he'll stop nagging us about settling down.

"Second, I'll get her to sweet-talk Dad into passing the company down to me. That way, you can keep being a doctor, and I'll finally become the chairwoman. Everyone wins!

"Third, she's young, gorgeous, and curvy. If everything goes well, we'll have a baby brother by next year. The family legacy will be secured, and you won't even have to lift a finger!

"Isn’t it perfect—ow! Why'd you pinch me?! That hurts!"

As we left the hospital, a familiar car flashed past. I turned my head to look.

"Was that Logan?"

Josie remained unfazed. "No, you're seeing things. He's probably busy whispering sweet nothings to his first love in the bed. Why would he have time for you?"

I considered myself a calm and rational person. I planned to break up with dignity and grace. But after hearing that, I suddenly felt like dignity was out of the question.

So, I blocked Logan on everything.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Simon arrived home just minutes after us. The moment he stepped inside, he disappeared into his room to change. His expression was stone-cold the entire time.

It wasn't until Maria brought dinner to the table that he finally emerged.

Josie took one look at him and nearly jumped.

"Are you insane? Why are you dressed like that at home?"

Simon sat at the dining table, completely composed. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, and his hair was neatly styled—looking every bit like an aloof, domineering CEO.

"Isn't this how I always dress?" he asked through gritted teeth.

Josie's lips twitched, but she didn't argue.

Just then, Josie's dad, Roman Lawson, came home. He greeted me warmly before sitting down at the table.

Simon eyed Roman's formal attire.

"Aren't you going to change? Don't you usually throw on an old T-shirt the second you step inside? You always go on about how uncomfortable suits are."

Roman glanced at me, then at Simon in his full formal wear, looking quite pleased. "It's rare for you two to bring a guest home. I figured I should at least look presentable."

Simon's lips twitched too.

With that, dinner officially began. Simon held his bowl with an air of superiority as he instructed, "Take the pork ribs away. They're too greasy."

Maria obediently moved the dish.

Then, Simon nibbled at his greens in small, refined bites.

Roman frowned and said, "Don't you normally refuse to eat vegetables? Didn't you say you can't survive without meat?"

Simon paused mid-bite. He looked toward Roman, who was neatly slicing his steak.

"Don't you usually eat your steak whole?"

Roman choked.

I hurriedly interfered, saying, "Honestly, I think that's a convenient way to eat it. I do that sometimes."

The tension in the air eased slightly.

Simon added, "Dad's favorite dish is grilled fish. He always spits the bones all over the table."

"Hey, are you out of your mind?" Roman gritted his teeth, threw down his cutlery, and stormed off. "You guys eat. I'm already full on anger!"

Josie kept her head down and focused on her food. She didn't dare speak or ask.

Maria was the one who finally broke the silence. "There's been a car parked outside the house for a while now. Not sure who they're waiting for. It looks like a… SUV?"

Simon immediately stood up. "I'll go check."

A moment later, we heard his voice from downstairs.

"Howard, get that car out of here. Tell them no one in this house ordered a ride and that they must've gotten the wrong address."

Simon: "So what? You're just here to show off your relationship and make me feel bad?"Logan: "Haha, I'm just a little emotional after drinking. I used to hate her and blame her, but I've let go now. I hope she gets what she wants and lives well. I realized that when you're surrounded by love, you just tend to be kind to the world."Simon replied with an annoyed emoji.Logan: "Okay, now that I've said it, it feels better. Let's delete the chat. Thanks for listening, man."Simon: "Wait, I'm not feeling good now."Logan: "What?"Simon: "I mean, your situation's off. You're still concerned about her—doesn't that mean you haven't let her go?"Logan: "No, I think I've let her go."Simon: "No, you haven't."Logan replied with a speechless emoji. Simon: "I mean it. Trust me, you're too involved to see it clearly, but I'm an outsider. Deep down, the person you love the most is still Leah. Speaking of which, who is she?"Logan: "I sent you a photo. That's her."Simon: "She's beauti

With his eyes still closed, Dr. Wilson answered, "There's an SUV downstairs, and it's filled with bouquets. It looks like it's for you."I blinked in surprise. Pushing open the window, I saw Logan standing below with a sea of flowers surrounding him.In the past few days, he desperately searched for me. He even booked an appointment with me and poured his heart out in a tearful confession.I rationally suggested that he might need to see a psychiatrist, but clearly, he didn't give up.Now, he was standing outside with an overwhelming display of flowers. When he saw me through the window, he started to bare his soul."I had too much of a drink that night. When I woke up, I realized I made a terrible mistake, and I've regretted it every second since. After thinking it through, I realized my feelings for Leah were nothing more than an obsession I carried for years over something I could never have."And once I had it, I finally understood that the person I truly love has always been

"That night, Logan must've crushed you with his answer, huh? You should understand now that you and I are different. He's been chasing me for five years, and still, he couldn't have me."But you just threw yourself at him. The way he sees us is very different. First love is the most unforgettable. Even if you two are married, I'll always be embedded in his heart."Leah's words were sharp, each one striking close to the heart. But I was beyond caring.Seeing that I wasn't reacting, she lowered her voice and continued, "And you know what? After you left that night, he took me home and stayed over at my place. While you were tossing and turning in bed, he was right next to me, sleeping soundly. That's the man you've loved for three years.""Speaking of which," she added, "Although I caused you some pain, you should thank me, right? I've shown you exactly what kind of man he is."I furrowed my brow, and my expression grew solemn.Leah smiled smugly. "Weren't you so calm just now? Wha

For the next while, I stayed at Josie's place and commuted to work with Simon in the morning. With all the distractions, the agony of my breakup passed surprisingly fast.Simon, like a once-feral man slowly integrating into civilization, started learning how to care for others. He even attempted to cook, which frightened Maria into thinking she would soon be out of a job.Another unfortunate casualty was Dr. Wilson.Simon suddenly lost his love for overtime. With him clocking out on time every day, Dr. Wilson was left to shoulder the workload alone. His hairline was visibly receding at an alarming rate.Josie remarked in admiration, "The most abnormal person in our family is finally becoming normal."But to me, Simon was still a little off.Take last night, for example. Right before bed, he checked on me like I was one of his patients."How are you feeling? Have you been sleeping well these past couple of days?"I nodded. "Yeah, I'm getting used to it."A moment later, he post

The next morning, all of us gathered at the table for breakfast.I had dark circles under my eyes. So did Simon. Meanwhile, Roman looked like he aged ten years overnight.Josie was stunned. "What happened to you guys? Did no one sleep well?"I stammered, "I-I guess… I'm just not used to a different bed.""Same here," said Simon.Roman, looking utterly drained, turned to Simon."Is that why you had to drag me down with you? You were acting crazy all night! Every time I got up to use the bathroom, you ran out to check on me. You were practically jumping at every sound. I barely got any sleep!"Simon was unapologetic as he refuted, "Who on earth gets up eight times in one night?"Roman seethed, "I'm old! I have an overactive bladder! Excuse me for being abnormal!"With that, he threw down his spoon and stormed off—his second consecutive meal filled with pure frustration. No wonder he never gained weight.Josie bit into a piece of toast and said to me, "Simon can drive you to work later."

"Give him 500 bucks to grab a meal while you're at it. At least he wouldn't have waited all night for nothing."I whispered to Josie, "Your brother's unhinged, but he's actually kind of nice."Josie had nothing to say.…Worried that Logan might come harass me, Josie suggested I stay at her place for a few days.Simon didn't object. In fact, he even offered me his room, claiming that it had better light. Then, he moved into the guest room next to Roman's bedroom.Josie clicked her tongue in amazement."Simon never lets me bring girls home, and he doesn't let them touch his things. I was starting to think he might be a bit of a misogynist. But look at how accommodating he is with you! Do you know what that means?""What does it mean?" I asked.Simon's footsteps on the stairs suddenly slowed."It means that Logan and Leah, those two scumbags, were so outrageous that even my cold-blooded brother can't help but sympathize you!" Josie huffed."If you have nothing better to say, just shut up
