Same night, same too

"Can I skip Friday?"

I kept my voice low, phone pressed hard against my ear, the stairwell door shut behind me so nobody at my new desk could hear.

Vince laughed like I'd told a joke. "Skip it? You're the one they asked for. You don't skip the good bookings, that's how you stop getting good bookings."

"I have a conflict."

"Everybody's got a conflict. Show up, do two hours, walk out with more than you'd make in a week anywhere else." His voice dropped, almost kind. "I know your situation. Just show up."

He hung up before I could argue, which was fair, because I didn't have an argument that didn't sound like a confession.

I splashed water on my face in the stairwell bathroom and went back to my desk like nothing had happened, because that was the only version of me anyone at Doyle Group was allowed to see.

"Ms. Whitfield." Marcus stopped by, a folder in his hand. "Mr. Doyle needs the Friday details confirmed before noon. Client dinner, downtown, off the usual venue rotation. Some place his sister recommended."

"Which place?"

"Don't have the name yet. Just the time." He was already moving on to something else.

I told myself downtown had a hundred private dining rooms. I told myself that twice more before lunch, and it worked exactly as well the third time as it had the first.

Adrian was standing by the window when I walked past his office, phone to his ear, one hand braced against the glass, jaw tight in a way I recognized from the sidewalk two days ago. Whatever the call was, he didn't like it.

He hung up and caught me watching.

"Everything all right?" he said.

"Just waiting on the Friday details for Marcus."

"Rachel picked the venue. Says it has the best private rooms in the city." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Client's important. I'd rather be home with Sophia."

"Sophia's your daughter."

"Eight years old and smarter than half my board." The line around his mouth softened, the first crack in him I'd seen all week. He stepped closer without seeming to notice he'd done it, close enough that I caught the smell of his aftershave over the coffee on his desk. "You have a kid too. Ethan, right?"

"He's eight too."

"Small world." He didn't smile, not quite, but he didn't look away either, and for a second neither of us moved. Then his phone buzzed against his palm and he looked down at it like he'd forgotten it was there. "Get me the venue name the second Marcus has it. I like to know where I'm walking into."

"Of course."

He held the door for me on my way out, his hand stopping an inch from my shoulder before he pulled it back and reached for the handle instead. I told myself it meant nothing. I hadn't believed that the first time either.

Rachel called at three, her voice bright as always. "I found the perfect place for Friday. Very discreet, very private. Adrian's client will love it."

"Sounds like you've thought of everything."

"I try." She laughed. "How's the job going? Is my brother being difficult?"

"He's been decent, actually."

"High praise, two days in." A pause, warmer. "I worry about him. He works too much, doesn't let people in easy. I have a feeling you'd be good for him."

"I appreciate that, Rachel."

"I should let you go. I just wanted to say hello." Her voice softened. "You looked so lost outside that hotel. I'm glad things are turning around for you."

I thanked her and hung up, and sat there a moment thinking about how little she knew, and how much I was starting to hope she never would. I thought about the doorway too, his hand stopping an inch short of my shoulder, and how many times since then I'd circled back to that half second without meaning to.

At four thirty, Marcus dropped a printed confirmation on my desk without a word.

I looked down at the name at the top.

The Silver Room.

I read it twice, like the letters might rearrange themselves into something else if I stared hard enough. They didn't. Same address I walked into six nights out of seven. Same back room Vince had already told me was booked, my name attached to it before I'd ever agreed to anything.

Adrian's dinner and my Friday shift were the same night, the same room, and I had three days to figure out how to be somewhere he would never see me and somewhere I couldn't afford to skip, both at once.

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Before Adrian gets in

"You're early."Rachel was already at the small table in the corner cafe two blocks from Doyle Group when I walked in, two coffees in front of her, one already pushed toward the empty chair."You said before Adrian gets in. I wasn't sure how literal to take that.""Very literal. He doesn't know I asked you here." She wrapped both hands around her own cup without drinking from it. "I didn't want an audience for this."I sat down across from her, my pulse doing something uneven under my ribs. "Okay.""I've been up most of the night thinking about how to start this conversation." She finally looked up. "So I'm just going to ask you directly, and I need you to give me a real answer. Is there anything else, Claire? Anything else about you I don't know, that's going to land on my desk sideways one day the way that invoice did?"I thought about the shoebox in my hallway closet. The divorce papers still sitting on my kitchen table. Nathan's voice on the phone the night before, calm and certai

"I danced there because it pays in cash, Rachel. That's all it ever was."The words came out steadier than I felt. Rachel stood in the doorway with her phone still lit in her hand, and for a moment nobody moved."You could have told me," she said. Her voice wasn't sharp yet, just careful, like she was walking across ice she wasn't sure would hold."Told you what? That I dance at a club four nights a week to cover my son's medical bills? That's not exactly something I lead with.""I got you a job here. I vouched for you." She looked at Adrian, then back at me. "I didn't even know you had a son with a health condition until right now. I thought I knew you a little, Claire.""You know the version of me that's had time to exist since you called that afternoon. That's not nothing."Rachel was quiet for a second, and the warmth in her face had gone somewhere I couldn't follow. "No. I suppose it isn't."Adrian stood, and the movement seemed to break whatever standoff was building. "Rachel, s

"Sit down, Claire."Adrian didn't look up from the folder on his desk when I walked in Monday morning. I'd barely slept the whole weekend, running the conversation in my head a hundred different ways, and none of them had started with him this calm.I sat."I spent the weekend deciding what to do about Friday." He closed the folder and finally looked at me. "I still don't like the timing of it. But I checked with the club. Called the manager myself, asked him straight out whether you'd requested that booking or been assigned it."My stomach dropped. "You called Vince?""I called Vince." He said the name like it tasted bad in his mouth. "He confirmed what you told me. You tried to get out of Friday. He wouldn't let you."I didn't know what to say to that, so I said nothing."That doesn't fix the fact that you're dancing in a club four nights a week while working for me during the day," he said. "That's not a small thing, Claire. That's a lot of hours for one person.""I know how many h

"You're on in ten."Vince knocked twice on the dressing room door and didn't wait for an answer. I sat in front of the mirror, my hands steadier than they had any right to be, going through everything one more time. Stay in the back section. Two songs, no more. Keep my eyes on the crowd, not on any one face in it."Big group tonight," Priya said, leaning past me to check her own reflection. "Corporate types. Suits everywhere. They booked the whole back room.""I know.""You okay? You've been weird all week.""Tired."She didn't push, which was one of the things I liked about her. I finished my hair, checked the clasp on my earring, and told myself the same thing I'd been telling myself since Wednesday. Downtown was full of private rooms. This was just one more night, one more shift, and Adrian Doyle had no reason to know my face outside an office.I was wrong about that in the first ten seconds. The lights came up and I stepped out, and the back room was exactly the crowd Priya had de

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Booked by name

"You're actually going."Denise stood in my kitchen doorway in her bathrobe, coffee in hand, watching me button my one good blazer."I'm actually going.""To work for a man whose sister just called you out of nowhere.""To work for a man who offered me a job before any of that happened." I checked my reflection in the microwave door, the closest thing I had to a mirror this early. "The offer doesn't change because his sister turned out to be nice about it."I kissed Ethan's forehead where he sat eating cereal at the counter, told Denise I owed her for the school pickup, and left before either of them could slow me down."Claire Whitfield," I told the receptionist. "I have a meeting with Mr. Doyle.""He doesn't usually see people himself." She reached for her phone. "One moment.""Ms. Whitfield." Adrian crossed the lobby toward me, jacket off, sleeves rolled. "You came.""You told me not to be late.""I did." He held the door. "Come up."His office took the corner of the fourteenth flo
