Chapter 2

Author: Eggtart
The bone-chilling cold, combined with the agonizing pain of labor, turned every passing second into a living hell.

"Yeah, don't worry. I'm keeping a close eye on her," Kathleen said into the phone.

The moment I heard Emery's voice through the speaker, a flicker of hope sparked in my desperate heart.

"Emery!" I screamed toward the door. "The baby's coming right now! Tell Kathleen to take me to the hospital!"

By then, I couldn't even control the shrieks tearing from my throat.

Outside, Kathleen hesitated before lowering her voice. "Emery... do you think she's actually in labor? She really sounds like she's dying in there. Should I take her to the ER just in case? I mean, this is your only child. If something happens..."

Emery fell silent for a moment, apparently weighing the decision.

In the end, he relented. "Fine, take her to..."

Before he could finish, a sweet, fragile voice drifted through the speaker.

"Emery, I'm craving pizza. The doctor said I need to keep my strength up for the delivery. Wait, is Priscilla about to give birth too?

"Don't worry about her. Labor doesn't hurt at all. I honestly don't feel a thing. Look at me. I could practically dance right now. I'm sure Priscilla feels the same way."

Of course, she wasn't in pain.

Emery had admitted her to an exclusive private medical center that charged $150,000 a day, complete with a top-tier medical team devoted to her every need.

Swayed by her words, Emery hardened his tone once again.

"What could happen to her? She's far too calculating to let herself get hurt. She's just screaming on purpose. Don't fall for her tricks."

With that, he hung up the phone.

Furious that her brother had chewed her out, Kathleen turned her anger on me instead. She unlocked the small ventilation hatch and shoved her pet snake through the opening.

"This is all your fault!" she hissed. "Stay in there and play with my baby."

A split second later, the slick, icy body of a snake coiled tightly around my neck. I shrieked in terror, but as it tightened its grip around my throat, my screams dissolved into a strangled, desperate gasp for air.

Struggling to breathe, I forced myself to stay calm. Supporting my heavy belly with one hand, I summoned every ounce of courage I had, reached up with the other, and tried to pry the snake off my neck.

But the creature twisted around and sank its fangs deep into my hand. I cried out and jerked my hand back, too terrified to touch it again.

My strength gave out, and I collapsed onto the frozen floor. Silent tears streamed down my face as my abdomen writhed with unbearable pain, as though a meat grinder were tearing my insides apart.

Lying there on the edge of death, I felt the snake loosen its grip around my neck and begin slithering across my trembling body, striking and biting me again and again.

Yet the cold and the agony of labor had numbed me so deeply that I could barely feel anything anymore. As my consciousness faded, I could almost see the Grim Reaper standing before me, beckoning me to follow him.

Just as I was slipping away, Kathleen suddenly stormed back. With a sharp whistle, she called the snake back to her and then slammed her hand against the freezer door.

By then, I didn't even have enough breath left to whisper. Sensing that something was wrong, Kathleen panicked. She unlocked the heavy door and stepped inside.

The room was dim.

She crouched beside me, grabbed me by the hair, and yanked my head back until I was forced to look at her. After examining my face, she snorted contemptuously and slammed my head back against the icy floor.

"Pathetic! Did my sweet baby scare you senseless? Why did you stop? Come on, keep screaming. You finally realized that screaming wasn't going to trick my brother into letting you out, so you shut up, huh? You really are devious to the core. You only do anything when there's something in it for you."

As she stroked the snake, a thin beam of light from the hallway fell across its scales, revealing the blood smeared over them.

Her expression instantly twisted with fury. She raised her foot and kicked me viciously in the abdomen.

"You crazy bitch!" she screamed, cradling the snake as though it were a precious child. "Why did you hurt my baby? Its life is worth a thousand of yours. If anything happens to him, I swear I'll make my brother divorce you.

"Emery has always loved Mavis anyway, so once you're gone, they'll finally be able to be together. And don't even think about taking that baby with you after you give birth."

"I... I didn't mean to hurt her," Emery stammered. "Priscilla and I are married. I only wanted to take her home. I'm sorry, Mr. Johnson. Priscilla never told me she had a family."He cringed on the floor, reduced to little more than a groveling mess. Consumed by rage, Roderick drove another brutal kick into his chest."Bring my daughter home? So you can torture her all over again?" Roderick roared. "Let me make one thing clear. Bankrupting your company would be far too merciful. If I could, I'd tear you apart piece by piece and make you feel every ounce of pain she suffered."I placed a hand on Roderick's back, trying to steady him and calm his breathing.Emery crawled toward me on his hands and knees, his eyes swollen and bloodshot, desperation written all over his face."Priscilla, please. I came here because I truly want to make things right with you. I was blinded by money and corporate ambition. I treated you like you were worthless. But when I thought you were dead, I honest

I smirked and rolled my eyes. "You arrogant narcissist."Speechless with rage, Emery stood there pointing a trembling finger at me. Just as I turned to leave, he suddenly lunged forward and seized my wrist again."I'm not letting you walk away from me again," he said firmly. "My only priority right now is taking you home. You have no idea what happened to me when I thought I'd lost you."My heart was shattered. I was going insane missing you. This time, no matter how much you try to provoke me, I'm not backing down."Who did he think he was fooling with this fake display of devotion? It was pathetic."Who do you think you are?" I spat, yanking my wrist free with all my strength. "Do you honestly think you have the right to demand anything from me?""Whether I have the right is for me to decide," he scoffed. Before I could react, he suddenly hoisted me over his shoulder. "I'm taking you home right now. You may refuse to tell me where the baby is, but once they're hungry, you won'

I didn't waste another moment dwelling on the past. Instead, I threw myself completely into learning how to run a company.I was a fast learner, and within a month, I was ready to take on an executive role at the company's headquarters. One day, just after an executive meeting ended, someone suddenly barged into the boardroom. To my surprise, it was Emery.I lifted a hand, signaling the board members and staff to leave. The moment Emery's eyes locked onto mine, he strode over and grabbed my wrist in a crushing grip."Priscilla, why did you fake your death? Do you have any idea how frantic I've been? I knew it. Someone who values her life as much as you do would never actually let herself die."His expression suddenly hardened as he looked around the luxurious executive suite."How on earth did you get in here? Don't you know ordinary people aren't even allowed inside this building? Even I had to go through hell to get security clearance."He threw up his hands with a frustrated

"It's okay, sweetheart. You can always have another child," Roderick said with a quiet sigh, grief weighing heavily on his face. "But don't shed another tear over that scumbag. He isn't worth it."I warned you from the very beginning that he was wrong for you, but you were so stubborn that you even threatened to cut me out of your life just to run away with him."I pulled the duvet down and looked at Roderick's aging face for the first time in years. The moment I saw him, I broke down all over again."Dad, I was wrong," I choked out between sobs. "Please forgive me. I'm not crying over him. I just miss my baby so much."Roderick gently wiped away my tears. "You silly girl. You're my only daughter. How could I ever stay angry with you?"Then his expression darkened into a cold, murderous fury. His hands curled into fists as he growled, "How dare Emery Copeland do this to you? That bastard must have a death wish. Don't worry. I'll make him pay for everything he did."I quietly trie

Emery's eyes widened with shock. He stumbled back several steps, desperately trying to pull himself together."That's impossible. She was fine when I left. There's no way she's dead," he insisted, almost as though saying it aloud could make it true. "This is just another one of her cheap tricks to get my attention. Didn't I tell you not to fall for her mind games?"Brady cowered, trembling as he forced the words out. "Mrs. Copeland's body is right outside the walk-in freezer. They already ran a DNA test. It really is her."A wave of dread crashed over Emery, and sheer panic flashed across his face. He snatched the car keys from Brady's hand and bolted down the hallway."To the freezer!"Brady didn't dare hesitate and hurried after him. Emery slammed his foot onto the gas, pushing the speedometer to its limit as he raced to the freezer site.He reached it in less than 20 minutes, where a small crowd had already gathered outside. Gasping for breath, he shoved his way through the c

I was slumped on the floor like a broken doll when my eyes suddenly met those of a man standing outside the door.It was Emery's secretary, Brady Parrish. His eyes widened in shock when he saw me, though he seemed uncertain that the blood-covered woman in front of him could really be his boss's wife.I tried to speak, but my throat was too raw to produce more than a broken sound. Before I could say a word, he turned and hurried into Emery's suite."Sir, there's a woman outside covered in blood," he reported. "She looks... a lot like Mrs. Copeland."Emery frowned and casually rubbed his fingertips together, completely convinced that his own conclusion was correct. "That's impossible. My wife is heavily pregnant. There's no way she could have made it all the way here."Brady lowered his voice, speaking cautiously. "Maybe you should step outside and take a look, sir. If that's really Mrs. Copeland, she and the baby could be in grave danger.""I said it's impossible." Emery shot him
