Chapter 3

Author: Eggtart
Kathleen spun on her heel in a fury, lowered the freezer's thermostat another ten degrees, and walked away.

The brutal cold penetrated straight through me, shaking my entire body with uncontrollable tremors. Through the haze of my fading consciousness, I thought I heard a baby crying.

In the darkness, my tiny child seemed to be calling out for me over and over, begging me to save them. I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.

Today was supposed to be the day I finally met my baby and held them in my arms. I had been so close. Why did fate have to play such a cruel joke with my child's life?

A raw, ragged scream tore from my throat as desperation crushed my heart. With rescue slipping farther and farther out of reach, I clutched my aching belly and stroked it, whispering to my baby.

"If there's a next life, I pray you'll be born into a family where your father truly loves your mother, and where you can grow up in a home filled with happiness."

My breathing grew weaker by the second, and the blood coursing through my veins seemed to turn to ice. Then the heavy freezer door swung open again, and someone switched on the overhead light.

The sight of me lying in a pool of blood clearly terrified the man standing there.

Summoning every bit of strength I had, I dragged myself toward him and forced out a raspy whisper. "Help... Help me..."

"Who are you?" he stammered, his voice shaking with panic. "What did you do to get locked in here by Mr. Copeland? Is this some kind of punishment?"

He stared at me warily, keeping his distance.

"I'm... his wife," I wheezed, painfully extending a blood-soaked hand.

Even the diamond engagement ring on my finger was so smeared with blood that its original shape was barely recognizable.

"He... gave me this ring. It's one of a kind."

The moment he recognized it, his expression shifted. Finally convinced that I was really Mrs. Copeland, he moved to help me up.

Then he hesitated, pulled out his phone, and called Emery.

Once the line went through, he reported, "Mr. Copeland, I came to pick up a shipment and found your wife here. She's covered in blood. Should I take her to the hospital immediately?"

Emery blinked. "Blood? Did she really hurt Kathleen's snake that badly? Enough to bleed all over the floor? No wonder Kathleen was so upset."

His voice quickly turned cold and certain. "There's no need to take her to the hospital. That's not her blood. She's fine. I'll come pick her up myself later."

The worker tried to explain, but Emery hung up without giving him another chance.

With no other choice, the man walked past me and went back to loading his truck. But after wrestling with his conscience for several moments, he finally turned around and came back.

"You're pregnant. I can't just leave you here to die," he muttered. "Think of it as doing one good deed for my wife and our baby."

He dragged me out of the freezer and called an ambulance. The moment I was brought outside, the tension that had been holding my body together finally snapped, and I lost consciousness.

When we reached the hospital, however, there wasn't a single delivery bed or piece of emergency equipment available for me.

Terrified that Mavis might run into complications during labor, Emery had reserved almost every piece of critical medical equipment in the city for her exclusive use.

My condition was critical, so the paramedics had no choice but to transfer me to a fully equipped private medical center to keep me alive.

The emergency doctor found the contact saved as "Husband" on my phone and called the number.

"Hello, is this Priscilla Copeland's family? You need to get to the medical center immediately. She is in critical condition and at high risk for an amniotic fluid embolism."

Emery exploded the moment he heard my name.

"Priscilla! You've got some nerve sneaking out on your own and hiring some actor to guilt-trip me!" he roared in disgust. "Let me make one thing clear. I don't care what kind of twisted game you're playing. I'm not falling for it.

"I know your condition better than anyone, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with you. Stay right where you are until it's your turn to give birth, and stop disgusting everyone with these cheap tricks!"

The doctor looked at me with deep pity before turning to the nurse. "Get her transferred to another hospital. We'll figure out what to do once we have the equipment we need."

I never imagined I would end up at the same hospital where Mavis Copeland was staying. But no matter how many times the doctors pleaded with Emery, he refused to release even a single piece of medical equipment.

Through the thin walls, I heard his cold, detached voice echo down the hallway.

"I don't care who it is. I'm not letting Mavis lose even the slightest chance of being saved. I want everything absolutely foolproof."

"I... I didn't mean to hurt her," Emery stammered. "Priscilla and I are married. I only wanted to take her home. I'm sorry, Mr. Johnson. Priscilla never told me she had a family."He cringed on the floor, reduced to little more than a groveling mess. Consumed by rage, Roderick drove another brutal kick into his chest."Bring my daughter home? So you can torture her all over again?" Roderick roared. "Let me make one thing clear. Bankrupting your company would be far too merciful. If I could, I'd tear you apart piece by piece and make you feel every ounce of pain she suffered."I placed a hand on Roderick's back, trying to steady him and calm his breathing.Emery crawled toward me on his hands and knees, his eyes swollen and bloodshot, desperation written all over his face."Priscilla, please. I came here because I truly want to make things right with you. I was blinded by money and corporate ambition. I treated you like you were worthless. But when I thought you were dead, I honest

I smirked and rolled my eyes. "You arrogant narcissist."Speechless with rage, Emery stood there pointing a trembling finger at me. Just as I turned to leave, he suddenly lunged forward and seized my wrist again."I'm not letting you walk away from me again," he said firmly. "My only priority right now is taking you home. You have no idea what happened to me when I thought I'd lost you."My heart was shattered. I was going insane missing you. This time, no matter how much you try to provoke me, I'm not backing down."Who did he think he was fooling with this fake display of devotion? It was pathetic."Who do you think you are?" I spat, yanking my wrist free with all my strength. "Do you honestly think you have the right to demand anything from me?""Whether I have the right is for me to decide," he scoffed. Before I could react, he suddenly hoisted me over his shoulder. "I'm taking you home right now. You may refuse to tell me where the baby is, but once they're hungry, you won'

I didn't waste another moment dwelling on the past. Instead, I threw myself completely into learning how to run a company.I was a fast learner, and within a month, I was ready to take on an executive role at the company's headquarters. One day, just after an executive meeting ended, someone suddenly barged into the boardroom. To my surprise, it was Emery.I lifted a hand, signaling the board members and staff to leave. The moment Emery's eyes locked onto mine, he strode over and grabbed my wrist in a crushing grip."Priscilla, why did you fake your death? Do you have any idea how frantic I've been? I knew it. Someone who values her life as much as you do would never actually let herself die."His expression suddenly hardened as he looked around the luxurious executive suite."How on earth did you get in here? Don't you know ordinary people aren't even allowed inside this building? Even I had to go through hell to get security clearance."He threw up his hands with a frustrated

"It's okay, sweetheart. You can always have another child," Roderick said with a quiet sigh, grief weighing heavily on his face. "But don't shed another tear over that scumbag. He isn't worth it."I warned you from the very beginning that he was wrong for you, but you were so stubborn that you even threatened to cut me out of your life just to run away with him."I pulled the duvet down and looked at Roderick's aging face for the first time in years. The moment I saw him, I broke down all over again."Dad, I was wrong," I choked out between sobs. "Please forgive me. I'm not crying over him. I just miss my baby so much."Roderick gently wiped away my tears. "You silly girl. You're my only daughter. How could I ever stay angry with you?"Then his expression darkened into a cold, murderous fury. His hands curled into fists as he growled, "How dare Emery Copeland do this to you? That bastard must have a death wish. Don't worry. I'll make him pay for everything he did."I quietly trie

Emery's eyes widened with shock. He stumbled back several steps, desperately trying to pull himself together."That's impossible. She was fine when I left. There's no way she's dead," he insisted, almost as though saying it aloud could make it true. "This is just another one of her cheap tricks to get my attention. Didn't I tell you not to fall for her mind games?"Brady cowered, trembling as he forced the words out. "Mrs. Copeland's body is right outside the walk-in freezer. They already ran a DNA test. It really is her."A wave of dread crashed over Emery, and sheer panic flashed across his face. He snatched the car keys from Brady's hand and bolted down the hallway."To the freezer!"Brady didn't dare hesitate and hurried after him. Emery slammed his foot onto the gas, pushing the speedometer to its limit as he raced to the freezer site.He reached it in less than 20 minutes, where a small crowd had already gathered outside. Gasping for breath, he shoved his way through the c

I was slumped on the floor like a broken doll when my eyes suddenly met those of a man standing outside the door.It was Emery's secretary, Brady Parrish. His eyes widened in shock when he saw me, though he seemed uncertain that the blood-covered woman in front of him could really be his boss's wife.I tried to speak, but my throat was too raw to produce more than a broken sound. Before I could say a word, he turned and hurried into Emery's suite."Sir, there's a woman outside covered in blood," he reported. "She looks... a lot like Mrs. Copeland."Emery frowned and casually rubbed his fingertips together, completely convinced that his own conclusion was correct. "That's impossible. My wife is heavily pregnant. There's no way she could have made it all the way here."Brady lowered his voice, speaking cautiously. "Maybe you should step outside and take a look, sir. If that's really Mrs. Copeland, she and the baby could be in grave danger.""I said it's impossible." Emery shot him
