Chapter 4

Author: Eggtart
I was slumped on the floor like a broken doll when my eyes suddenly met those of a man standing outside the door.

It was Emery's secretary, Brady Parrish. His eyes widened in shock when he saw me, though he seemed uncertain that the blood-covered woman in front of him could really be his boss's wife.

I tried to speak, but my throat was too raw to produce more than a broken sound. Before I could say a word, he turned and hurried into Emery's suite.

"Sir, there's a woman outside covered in blood," he reported. "She looks... a lot like Mrs. Copeland."

Emery frowned and casually rubbed his fingertips together, completely convinced that his own conclusion was correct. "That's impossible. My wife is heavily pregnant. There's no way she could have made it all the way here."

Brady lowered his voice, speaking cautiously. "Maybe you should step outside and take a look, sir. If that's really Mrs. Copeland, she and the baby could be in grave danger."

"I said it's impossible." Emery shot him a sharp glare. "If that were really her, she wouldn't be sitting quietly outside. She would have barged in here demanding her share of the family assets by now.

"Besides, a scheming woman like her, someone who only cares about herself, would never let herself get covered in blood."

While the doctor made one final attempt to convince Emery to release some of the equipment, Emery flatly threatened to have him fired.

Defeated and helpless, the doctor turned back to me and apologized, telling me there was nothing he could do. But now that I had escaped the freezer, I refused to give up on my baby's survival, even if the odds were one in a million.

Clutching my belly through another wave of agonizing contractions, I borrowed the doctor's phone and dialed a number I knew by heart.

Once the line went through, I spoke desperately. "Dad, I'll never disobey you again. Please... save me."

Roderick Johnson didn't mince words. He simply asked where I was.

The moment I heard his voice, I burst into tears. The grief, regret, and suffocating despair I'd been holding inside for so long came crashing down all at once.

Less than 15 minutes later, a medical helicopter touched down outside. A team of top specialists rushed out to retrieve me.

They lifted me aboard the helicopter, which had been outfitted as a state-of-the-art mobile operating room, and the surgical team immediately prepared me for an emergency delivery.

Scalpels cut into my lower abdomen. Even with a spinal block dulling the worst of the pain, I could still feel the sharp pressure and tugging as the surgeons worked.

After what felt like an eternity, the lead surgeon finally exhaled. "The baby is out."

But there was no cry. My heart felt as though it had been ripped open, and a cold dread swallowed me whole.

Sobbing, I forced the words out. "Is my baby okay?"

The doctor gently pressed me back onto the gurney, his tone solemn. "Stay calm. Your baby is in critical condition and needs to be flown to the island facility for immediate treatment."

My mind went blank. All I could do was nod numbly.

As the helicopter prepared for takeoff, I called out to Roderick's right-hand man. "When I'm gone, what about Emery? He's going to tear the city apart looking for me."

He patted my hand reassuringly. "Don't worry. Your father has taken care of everything."

...

Back at the hospital, Emery had been standing guard outside the operating room. The moment the doors opened, his first concern was whether Mavis had made it through safely.

Once Mavis had been moved to her VIP suite, Emery picked up the newborn baby, his eyes shining with joy.

"The baby looks just like you," he murmured. "So beautiful."

But as the words left his mouth, he suddenly paused.

A thought crossed his mind. He wondered what his child with me would have looked like. A girl would probably have taken after me. She would have been even more beautiful.

After soothing the newborn to sleep, Emery finally turned to leave.

It was already the next morning. It was time to go to the warehouse, retrieve me from the freezer, and take me to the hospital.

Just then, his secretary appeared in the hallway.

Emery tossed him the car keys. "Drive to the warehouse and take my wife to the hospital."

Brady lowered his head, terrified to meet Emery's eyes. He stood there shaking so badly that his teeth were chattering.

As Emery's patience began to run out, Brady finally managed to force the words past his trembling lips. "Sir, Mrs. Copeland and the baby... are both dead."

"I... I didn't mean to hurt her," Emery stammered. "Priscilla and I are married. I only wanted to take her home. I'm sorry, Mr. Johnson. Priscilla never told me she had a family."He cringed on the floor, reduced to little more than a groveling mess. Consumed by rage, Roderick drove another brutal kick into his chest."Bring my daughter home? So you can torture her all over again?" Roderick roared. "Let me make one thing clear. Bankrupting your company would be far too merciful. If I could, I'd tear you apart piece by piece and make you feel every ounce of pain she suffered."I placed a hand on Roderick's back, trying to steady him and calm his breathing.Emery crawled toward me on his hands and knees, his eyes swollen and bloodshot, desperation written all over his face."Priscilla, please. I came here because I truly want to make things right with you. I was blinded by money and corporate ambition. I treated you like you were worthless. But when I thought you were dead, I honest

I smirked and rolled my eyes. "You arrogant narcissist."Speechless with rage, Emery stood there pointing a trembling finger at me. Just as I turned to leave, he suddenly lunged forward and seized my wrist again."I'm not letting you walk away from me again," he said firmly. "My only priority right now is taking you home. You have no idea what happened to me when I thought I'd lost you."My heart was shattered. I was going insane missing you. This time, no matter how much you try to provoke me, I'm not backing down."Who did he think he was fooling with this fake display of devotion? It was pathetic."Who do you think you are?" I spat, yanking my wrist free with all my strength. "Do you honestly think you have the right to demand anything from me?""Whether I have the right is for me to decide," he scoffed. Before I could react, he suddenly hoisted me over his shoulder. "I'm taking you home right now. You may refuse to tell me where the baby is, but once they're hungry, you won'

I didn't waste another moment dwelling on the past. Instead, I threw myself completely into learning how to run a company.I was a fast learner, and within a month, I was ready to take on an executive role at the company's headquarters. One day, just after an executive meeting ended, someone suddenly barged into the boardroom. To my surprise, it was Emery.I lifted a hand, signaling the board members and staff to leave. The moment Emery's eyes locked onto mine, he strode over and grabbed my wrist in a crushing grip."Priscilla, why did you fake your death? Do you have any idea how frantic I've been? I knew it. Someone who values her life as much as you do would never actually let herself die."His expression suddenly hardened as he looked around the luxurious executive suite."How on earth did you get in here? Don't you know ordinary people aren't even allowed inside this building? Even I had to go through hell to get security clearance."He threw up his hands with a frustrated

"It's okay, sweetheart. You can always have another child," Roderick said with a quiet sigh, grief weighing heavily on his face. "But don't shed another tear over that scumbag. He isn't worth it."I warned you from the very beginning that he was wrong for you, but you were so stubborn that you even threatened to cut me out of your life just to run away with him."I pulled the duvet down and looked at Roderick's aging face for the first time in years. The moment I saw him, I broke down all over again."Dad, I was wrong," I choked out between sobs. "Please forgive me. I'm not crying over him. I just miss my baby so much."Roderick gently wiped away my tears. "You silly girl. You're my only daughter. How could I ever stay angry with you?"Then his expression darkened into a cold, murderous fury. His hands curled into fists as he growled, "How dare Emery Copeland do this to you? That bastard must have a death wish. Don't worry. I'll make him pay for everything he did."I quietly trie

Emery's eyes widened with shock. He stumbled back several steps, desperately trying to pull himself together."That's impossible. She was fine when I left. There's no way she's dead," he insisted, almost as though saying it aloud could make it true. "This is just another one of her cheap tricks to get my attention. Didn't I tell you not to fall for her mind games?"Brady cowered, trembling as he forced the words out. "Mrs. Copeland's body is right outside the walk-in freezer. They already ran a DNA test. It really is her."A wave of dread crashed over Emery, and sheer panic flashed across his face. He snatched the car keys from Brady's hand and bolted down the hallway."To the freezer!"Brady didn't dare hesitate and hurried after him. Emery slammed his foot onto the gas, pushing the speedometer to its limit as he raced to the freezer site.He reached it in less than 20 minutes, where a small crowd had already gathered outside.
