Chapter 7

Author: Luna V
Master Alistair spun and sprinted back toward the chamber door.

He made it two steps before freezing mid-stride.

Then, as if he’d seen a specter, he stumbled backward, scrambling away from the entrance.

Selene, seeing his reaction, leaned to peek inside.

She just got her head past the doorway before lurching back, doubling over to retch violently against the wall.

The commotion finally roused Liana.

She pushed herself up along the wall, stumbling toward the healing chamber.

She stopped halfway.

  • He Chose Her Over Me   Chapter 8

Their heads swiveled toward my shadowed corner in unison.I held up my phone, the screen glowing. For three years in this city, I had stayed in the background, in the closed-off corners. This was the first time I walked from the shadows into their direct line of sight.Even if this ‘audience’ was only Leon and Liana, it was enough.“Elara?!”“How are you here?”Liana released Selene and charged toward me like a feral she-wolf.Just as I had once charged toward Old, toward my mother’s desecrated remains.I sidestepped, but her claws—still in human form—latched onto my ankle. She dropped to her knees before me, pointing a shaking hand at the bloody horror that was her son.“Elara, I beg you, save him! Please!”I looked at Leon, a husk weeping blood onto sterile tiles. A small, cold smile touched my lips.I actually laughed.A soft, humorless sound.“Have you lost your senses, Liana?”“I’m the fraud, remember? The blasphemer. You’re in a clinic full of Healers. You don’t ask them to save

I followed the crowd, slipping away from the hotel in an inconspicuous corner.Hailing a cab at the curb, I directed it to follow Leon’s medical transport.Selene had appeared calm in front of Liana earlier, but the frantic speed of the vehicle betrayed her inner panic. We hadn’t left the hotel grounds long before my phone began vibrating with an insistent call.I glanced at it and smiled. It seemed Liana didn’t trust Selene much either.I set the phone to silent, watching the screen light up and go dark, over and over. The flashing glow probably mirrored the frantic beat of Liana’s heart right now. When I kept not answering, Liana switched to messages.[Elara, where are you? Leon was wrong about the wedding. He knows it now. Please, for the sake of the generations of alliance between your bloodline and our Pack, come to the infirmary.][Elara, you’ve been here three years. I’ve treated you well, haven’t I? If not for him, then for my sake, please don’t hold this against him.]I let ou

“LEON!”Liana’s shriek pierced the sudden, vacuum-like silence. She stumbled, her legs giving way, and fell to her knees beside her son’s inert form.“Leon, baby, get up! Get up!” She shook his shoulders, her cries turning into ragged sobs.Selene, who had been basking in the anticipated applause, took a stumbling step back. Her confident mask shattered into pure shock. She whirled to stare at the large screen. The vitals were still normal. The lines marched on, unwavering, a cruel mockery of the reality on the ground. She looked from Liana’s ashen, frantic face to Leon’s terrifyingly still body. Her composure cracked. She waved frantically toward a small group of wolves dressed in Healer’s tunics near the front.“Check him! Now!”So, she’d brought her own team. Prepared for everything but this. The Healers rushed forward, pushing past a distraught Liana. Selene snatched the main monitor module from Leon’s belt and shoved it at one.“Check the equipment for failure!”She then gently, b

Every White Wolf was laid to rest with a piece of their heart-stone, a moon-touched crystal that held a fragment of their essence. It was a sacred secret, meant for bloodline members only.I’d told Leon about it one night, in a moment of foolish, trusting intimacy. When we’d first pledged ourselves. The vehicle stopped at the edge of the hallowed grove. Leon hauled me out.He gestured to the enforcers. Two carried heavy digging tools.“Dig it up.”“Leon, no! She’s under the Moon’s peace! You can’t!”I tried to throw myself at him, but an enforcer held me back. The first shovelful of dark, rich earth flew from my mother’s grave. It landed on my shoes.Leon held up his phone, my confession video ready to send. “Behave, Omega. Or your shame becomes public legacy.”I stood, paralyzed, as they desecrated the mound. Selene watched, nestled under Leon’s arm, a small, satisfied smile on her lips.I saw the gleam of white bone. And there, nestled beside the skeleton’s chest cavity, was the hear

  • He Chose Her Over Me   Chapter 3

I woke to the scent of poultices—moss, crushed yarrow, and something bitter. The pain was a dull, all-over throb.I forced my eyes open. I was in a dim, earthy room. Old Grey knelt beside the low pallet, his gnarled hands carefully applying a cool paste to the burns on my arm.“Grey…” My voice cracked.“Hush, pup,” he murmured, not looking up. His eyes, kind and tired, were focused on his work. “I know. You have to stay for the sunrise after his birthday.”The door exploded inward. It wasn’t a knock. It was the sound of splintering wood. Six Pack enforcers, led by Leon’s Beta, filled the small space. They hauled me off the pallet. Another grabbed Old Grey, pinning his arms.Leon strode in. He backhanded me across the face. The force sent me sprawling onto the dirt floor, my jaw singing with pain.“So this is the rat’s nest,” he sneered, looking around the humble den. “I wondered where you were getting your poison.”He walked over to where Grey was held. Without a word, he drew a slende
