Chapter 1

I got my phone out and messaged my best friend, Delia Leland.

She video-called me right back.

"Since when do you want to travel with me? Your mating ceremony is in six days. Two days ago you said you didn't have the time."

As far as she was concerned, my life revolved around marrying Nathaniel. A wolf like me wouldn't put off ceremony preparations to go on a trip.

I didn't explain. I switched to the rear camera and pointed it at my future mate, Nathaniel, and his childhood friend, Yvonne, a short distance away.

The photographer had them posed with their faces almost touching.

The call went quiet for a few seconds.

"Pack tonight. I'll come get you tomorrow."

After I hung up, Nathaniel looked over at me from across the field and started walking my way.

My heart, which I'd thought had gone numb, still gave a traitorous leap. I thought he'd finally remembered I was there.

I dug the mirror out of my bag to check whether my makeup had smudged.

"Give me your ring."

My hand froze. His words didn't sink in.

Nathaniel held out his hand. "Yvonne wants a photo of us showing off our rings. Lend her yours for a minute."

I stared at him.

"Do you really think it's okay to take that kind of photo with her?"

"It's just for one photo. She'll give it right back."

She'd give it right back.

He said it the way you'd talk about borrowing an eraser at school. Use it, hand it back, done.

I closed my hand around the ring.

"I don't want to lend it to her."

His brows pulled together.

"Chloe, can't you be a little more generous?"

I opened my mouth, then realized there was no point.

For seven years, he'd been telling me I wasn't generous enough.

Two years ago, his company organized a team trip to an island. Employees could bring a partner.

Yvonne said the light out there was great for photos, so he crossed my name off the list.

I was angry about it, and he said I wasn't generous enough.

Last year, Yvonne wanted to celebrate her birthday early, so he left me alone at our engagement dinner and took her to dinner in a luxury suite overlooking the river.

I fell apart with jealousy, and he said I wasn't generous enough.

Today, Yvonne had ruined the bridal shoot I'd been looking forward to. Now he wanted to use my ring as a prop for her, after I'd visited several shops to get it designed. Yet in Nathaniel's eyes, even being hurt by all this meant I wasn't generous enough.

Yvonne came over and broke up the standoff.

"It's fine, Nathaniel. I don't need that shot. Don't fight with Chloe over something so small."

She took Nathaniel's arm and smiled at me.

"Chloe, you have great taste. This location is beautiful. I love it."

She smiled with perfect composure, as if she were the bride posing for the cameras.

My nails dug into my palm, but I said nothing.

"There's just one thing I should mention to you."

She bit back a laugh.

"Your makeup is way too heavy today, and it looks cakey. It's really ugly."

I stood there. For a second I had no idea how to react.

Yvonne had said it loudly, and the crew nearby all turned their heads to look.

My cheeks burned under their stares. I lowered my head, then lowered it even further.

"Don't be upset, Chloe. I'm only telling you the truth."

She took a bottle of expensive makeup remover out of her bag and handed it to me as if she were giving me a handout.

"Nathaniel's an idiot. He was worried I'd break out if I didn't remove all my makeup, so he bought me a whole case at once.

"But I hardly wear makeup, so I'll never use it all. Take it and wash that off. Go easier on the makeup next time."

I looked at the green bottle. Suddenly, the whole thing seemed laughable.

A while back, I'd been testing makeup looks for the bridal shoot and using a lot of product. I hadn't been removing it properly, so my face kept getting red, swollen, and irritated.

Nathaniel had looked at my face for a long time back then and said nothing.

Later, I picked up his phone to check the mating ceremony details and saw that he'd ordered $1,000 worth of makeup remover.

I'd been quietly thrilled. I'd thought he was caring beneath that cold exterior and had secretly bought it to surprise me.

It wasn't for me at all.

I let out a bitter, self-mocking laugh.

Nathaniel rubbed his nose, looking guilty.

"If you want some, I'll buy you some next time."

My mouth twisted. I didn't believe him. When it came to me, there was never a next time.

Next time he'd buy me a camera.

Next time he'd make up for missing my birthday dinner by throwing me one.

Next time he'd come pick out furniture with me and set up our place.

After enough promises of "next time," there was no trust left.

I didn't want any part of this anymore. I turned and went back to the dressing room.

Behind me, Yvonne sounded wounded. "Nathaniel, is she angry? It's my fault. I always say the wrong thing."

Nathaniel comforted her. "It's fine.

"She'll get over it on her own."

He was always like this.

He had never once cared what I was feeling. He just waited for me to get over it on my own.

But Nathaniel White, I was tired of talking myself into forgiving you. This time, I wasn't going to do it.

The police arrived quickly. A camera had recorded Nathaniel grabbing me, and I insisted on pressing charges rather than settling. They took him into custody for harassment and held him for a week.Delia heard what had happened over the phone and rushed over. She swore at Nathaniel's retreating back. "You piece of garbage! She broke up with you, and you still had the nerve to follow her here. If this country didn't have laws, I'd have beaten you senseless myself."If the owner and I hadn't both held her back, she'd have gone for him.I pushed her into a chair and poured her a glass of water. "All right, calm down. I'm fine."I poured myself one too.Nathaniel had genuinely frightened me back there. To me, he'd always been the calm one.Whenever we fought, I'd be furious while he sat there drinking water.I'd almost never seen Nathaniel lose control like that.I took a sip and thought it through. The police said a week. He knows where I live. When he gets out, he'll come back.I remember

He'd lost a lot of weight, and there was stubble all over his jaw.His eyes were bloodshot, as if he hadn't slept properly in a long time. His gaze sharpened when he saw me, and his eyes lit up.He came running over and reached for my hands. "Chloe."I quietly stepped back, out of his reach. His hand froze in midair, then closed. He looked at me, hurt."You don't want me anymore?"In the light of the sunset over the water, he looked even more haggard.I looked at him and said nothing.During those first nights after I left him, I thought about him constantly. I remembered every kind thing he'd done for me, every little detail of our time together.I'd wonder what he was doing, whether he ever thought about me, and whether he regretted losing me.Getting over him was brutal. Night after night, I couldn't sleep. If he'd shown up in front of me then, I'd have cried and forgiven him.Time had a way of dulling even the deepest pain. Now, looking at him felt like passing a wolf I'd never met

Once I was in the car, Delia handed me a blanket and a heat pack. Her jaw tightened when she saw me shivering."Nathaniel White is a complete asshole. Throwing you out in the middle of the night and not even giving you a coat."I rubbed my stiff hands together and told her it was fine.Delia turned up the heat and reclined my seat.I was about to lean back when my stomach chose that moment to growl. She was horrified. "Don't tell me you haven't eaten."I nodded guiltily. Her hands closed into fists. She took me straight to the late-night restaurant everyone in the city knew and ordered enough food to cover the table.I ate like a starving wolf while Delia watched, looking heartbroken.Once I'd eaten and had something to drink, we went straight to the airport. When the plane landed, I saw Nathaniel's message and realized I'd forgotten to delete his contact. I blocked his number and deleted the contact right away. Then Delia and I hauled our bags to the little seaside place we'd rented.

Nathaniel's POVNathaniel cleared the dishes before he opened the front door."Do you know what you did wrong?"Nobody in the hallway answered.Nathaniel frowned and stepped out.The cold air cut through him. Everything was eerily quiet. The things he'd thrown out last night lay scattered across the floor, filthy and ruined by the wind and rain.He searched every corner of the hallway, even the stairwell, but found no sign of Chloe. And then Nathaniel panicked.Yvonne came out with a coat and put it over his shoulders."Chloe's gone too far. Instead of waiting in the hallway, she's hiding to make you worry. If you ask me, she's doing it on purpose."Nathaniel caught her hand as if it could steady him. He couldn't help asking, "You think she's doing it on purpose?""Obviously."Yvonne clasped his hand in return."Women love keeping you on the hook. She didn't get her bridal photos yesterday, then she refused to apologize and got thrown out. She's humiliated and angry."She wants you to

Nathaniel's POVThunder rumbled in the middle of the night, and rain poured down outside. The noise woke Nathaniel. Instinctively, he put an arm around the person sleeping beside him.She felt thinner than before, and it made him frown.Chloe had gone overboard with dieting and working out for the photos and the ceremony. He could feel her bones digging into him now. She'd felt better with a little more weight on her.Even her scent had changed. It was wrong. He didn't like it.He pulled her in tighter."Nathaniel, I can't breathe."Nathaniel loosened his hold.A few seconds later it hit him that something was wrong.Chloe's voice didn't sound like that.He got up quickly and turned on the light.Yvonne squinted at him, confused."What's the matter?"Nathaniel looked at her as the events of the day came back to him, one by one. He'd thrown Chloe out because she wouldn't admit she was wrong. Then he'd let Yvonne sleep beside him after she'd said she was afraid to sleep alone.Nathaniel

The photo I'd treasured for seven years hit the floor and broke apart. My eyes stung despite myself. Those seven years felt like one long joke.I still remembered moving in when the place was completely empty.Nathaniel had told me this would always be my home and I could decorate it however I liked. And now he was shielding Yvonne behind him and screaming at me to get out of his house.I wiped my eyes and looked at him."Are you sure you want to throw me out?"Nathaniel went quiet.Yvonne grabbed his hand, pleading with him. "Nathaniel, don't do anything rash."Then she came running over and took hold of my hands."Chloe, all of this is because of me."I'll do anything you want if it means you and Nathaniel will make up.""Then get out," I said calmly."Never come near him again, and we'll be fine."Yvonne froze, her eyes instantly filling with tears."All right. I'm leaving right now."She turned as she said it, took a few steps, and swayed.Nathaniel caught her immediately."Chloe S
