Chapter 3

Author: Luna D
After just one bottle of formula, Lia started throwing up over and over.

Late on the third night, her fever spiked to 102°F, and her cries had grown hoarse.

I carried her to find Dante. When the study door opened, Victoria was standing in front of him, favoring her injured leg, with blood on the hem of her pants.

"My other car lost control too," she said. "It had barely left the garage when the brakes stopped working."

Dante was already reaching for Lia.

Then Victoria swayed, and his hand stopped in midair and went to steady her instead.

"Lia throws up when she smells medicine." I fought to keep my voice from shaking. "Dante, her fever is 102. Take us to the hospital now."

He glanced down at the baby.

Lia's face was bright red with fever, and her little hand clutched weakly at my collar.

I thought he would at least take her from me.

Instead, he called the family doctor and sent him to check Victoria first. Then he had the armored car brought around for her and sent every guard on the estate to line the route to the hospital.

"I'll have a car and driver take you." He tucked Lia's blanket around her. "She's still crying, so it can't be that serious. Victoria may have just survived another assassination attempt."

I went cold all over.

"So her leg matters more than your daughter's life?"

"Don't say that." Dante frowned. "You know how to take care of Lia better than anyone. You'd never actually let anything happen to her."

Once again, he assumed I'd handle everything.

And that meant the doctor, the fastest car, and every last guard could all go to another woman instead.

I climbed into the regular sedan with Lia. She twitched in my arms, and I was so scared my fingers went numb. I kept calling her name the whole way.

The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror and asked if he should push through the traffic.

I looked at the traffic closing in behind Dante's convoy and could only tell him to hurry.

The ER admission, the blood tests, the fever medication, the overnight observation. I signed every form myself. Alone.

The doctor said that if the fever stayed this high, Lia could get dehydrated. He told me to watch her breathing and temperature all night.

I didn't dare close my eyes.

When a nurse asked where the baby's father was, my throat closed up. All I said was that he had something more important to do.

When the needle went in, Lia cried so hard she could barely breathe. I held down her tiny arm, and that was when I finally cried.

I wasn't afraid I couldn't handle it.

I was afraid Dante trusted me so much to handle everything that one day, it would cost our daughter her life.

He didn't show up until after dawn.

He had brought a thermos of my usual hot porridge. He touched Lia's forehead first, then asked the doctor to go over her test results again.

When he heard it was only an infection, he relaxed.

"Victoria was in real danger last night. If that crash had been just a little bit off—"

"Enough."

I opened the hospital's emergency contact page and deleted his name right in front of him. I put in Rosa and the family doctor instead.

The color slowly drained from Dante's face.

"Bianca, I'm her father."

"Not last night."

His hand froze in midair.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes. But it came too late, and that only made me angrier. When Lia needed him most, he'd already decided she would be fine without him.

I picked up Lia, who had fallen into a deep sleep once the fever broke, and walked past him.

At noon that day, he received the divorce papers along with a formal notice that he was no longer authorized to act for the De Luca family.

On the day the divorce was announced, I took the first flight back to New York.Dante was already waiting outside the law office. He was wearing the dark suit he had worn when we got married. He didn't have any flowers this time, just a box of files in his arms. When he saw the brace on my wrist, the first thing he asked was, "Does it still hurt?""When it rains."He nodded and didn't say anything about switching doctors this time. The box contained a full inventory of assets. On top of what Lia and I were legally entitled to, Dante was offering several properties and bank accounts belonging to his family. Before the lawyer could explain, I slid the documents for those additional assets back across the table."I'm only taking back what belongs to my family."Dante stared at the stack of papers."It's the least I can do.""Every time you hurt me, you try to make up for it with some grand gesture. But I don't need one."Under the table, Dante's fingers curled into a fist."I never asked

Salvatore came on the third day of the divorce waiting period. He didn't call first. He just stood outside my apartment door with an old wicker basket. Inside were the lemon cookies I used to crave whenever I was sick as a child, and the ring of office keys my father had left with him.I didn't let him in right away. Before the christening, he was also the one who had put my trip on hold in the name of protecting me and had my luggage carried back to my room."Who sent you to talk me around this time?"Salvatore lowered his head."I came to see your hand first."His gaze fell on my cast, then drifted to my abdomen, where my surgical incision was still healing."Does it still hurt?"It was such an ordinary question, but suddenly I was fighting back tears.Since I left New York, plenty of people had asked me when I was going back, whether the docks would end up on the Romano family's bad side, and what Lia would do without a father.Hardly anyone had asked first whether I was in pain.I

Dante flew back to New York that night. The lights were still on in the living room at the Romano estate. Carmela was on the sofa. The room Victoria had stayed in had already been cleared out, but Carmela was still directing the staff to put the nursery suite back the way it was."Don't bother," Dante said. "Bianca isn't coming back."Carmela looked up."Once she's done throwing her tantrum, she'll bring the baby home. You shouldn't have let her back Victoria into a corner like that in front of outsiders."Dante threw the walkway footage and the car data onto the coffee table."Victoria has a father. She has her own estate, and she has the Valenti guards. Why did you have to bring her here?"Carmela stiffened."Someone had just tried to kill her! How was I supposed to know whether the threat was real?""You knew she had somewhere to stay." Dante took a step closer. "And you knew Bianca was getting ready to leave. Who told Victoria that Bianca's luggage was already on its way to the air

Victoria tracked me down at the docks on a Sunday afternoon.Lia had just gotten over her croup, and Rosa was holding her in the sunny yard. The moment I saw Victoria get out of the car, I had the guards take the baby inside. She wasn't wearing any makeup, and the only person with her was the Valenti family's lawyer."I'm here to negotiate a settlement.""Talk to my lawyer."She stepped in front of me."I'll leave New York. I'll never see Dante again. All I ask is that you drop the charges over the car accidents and what happened at the christening.""Did August put you up to this?"Victoria pressed her lips together.August had already suspended her from every position she held in the alliance. If the truth about the two staged car accidents and Lia's fall came to light, she stood to lose not just her freedom, but her place as heir. But none of that was my doing."Whether you leave him or not has nothing to do with me."Victoria looked at me for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed."

Dante didn't leave LA.He bought a house just outside the docks, and every morning he sent over soup, formula, and baby supplies.Sometimes it was food I liked. Sometimes it was a blanket just like the one Lia had used in New York.Every time, I had the guards send it all back untouched. On the third day, he started leaving things outside the gate and stopped asking to see me.Every day, Enzo brought me a list of what Dante had left. I never even opened the bags. It wasn't that the gifts weren't thoughtful. It was that Dante always knew how to make up for what was missing—once the danger was over. The more thoughtful his care was, the clearer it became to me that none of it could make up for the moments when I really needed him to be there. One night a week later, Lia suddenly couldn't make a sound when she cried. Her mouth was open, but all that came out of her throat was a fast, rasping wheeze, and her little face was turning red.I sat bolt upright in bed. It felt like a hand had cl

When Dante couldn't find me, he waited outside the docks all night. At lunchtime the next day, my secretary told me he still hadn't left, so I finally had someone bring him into the outer yard.I hadn't seen him in a few days, and his jaw was dark with stubble. He hadn't brought any bodyguards. He carried only the signed documents transferring the De Luca family's assets and authority back to me.And a bouquet of white roses, my favorite. When he saw the cast on my wrist, he took a step forward, and the guards blocked him."Mr. Romano."His face went pale.I took the documents and checked every page to make sure my father's delegated authority and my voting rights had been restored. The flowers stayed at his feet.Turning the pages sent pain through my right wrist.I paused. Dante reached for me immediately, and I stepped back.Slowly, he drew his hand back."I got Lia a pink diamond." Dante took a velvet jewelry box from his pocket. "She's our heir. She should have it.""No, thanks. M
