Chapter 2

작가: Luna D
The room Carmela wanted cleared out was the first-floor nursery suite.

The staff had just started moving Lia's sterilizer when I blocked the doorway.

"Put it back."

Dante came down the stairs and told everyone to stop at once.

"This is Bianca and Lia's room. Nobody touches it."

For a moment, the tightness in my chest eased a little.

But Carmela slapped the room key down on the table.

"Upstairs is too far from the exits. This is the only room where the guards can cover both the garage and the door. Do you want the Valenti heir to die on our doorstep?"

Victoria stayed silent, leaning against the wall as she pretended to leave.

"Never mind. I'll find somewhere else to stay. At least that way, the baby won't be in danger if the killer comes back."

Carmela's eyes filled with tears at once.

"Someone just tried to kill her, and you want to throw her out? Bianca, you're a mother too. How can you be so heartless?"

A lump formed in my throat. I'd nearly been permanently disabled after that fall in the bathroom, and my C-section incision still ached every day. Yet somehow, Victoria was the one everyone felt sorry for.

Dante was quiet for a moment. Then he pulled me aside.

"Just two nights. I'll keep watch myself. No one will touch your things or Lia's."

He sounded like he was begging.

And yet, I was the one who had to give in.

As the staff carried Victoria's luggage into the hall, she turned back to me. "Thank you. I know you just had a baby and you don't like having outsiders in the house."

With one thank-you, she'd made herself look gracious and me look petty.

That night, Victoria's leg began to swell, and the doctor ordered her to keep an ice pack on it overnight.

She gave Dante the ice pack with a faint smile.

"You used to get the ice packs ready for me after every race."

Dante took it without hesitation and wrapped it in a towel, his movements practiced and familiar.

The next day, when I went to get breast milk for Lia, I found that the entire month's supply I'd stored in the freezer had been moved to the fridge. All of it had thawed.

Rosa picked up a bag and looked it over. She quietly told me it couldn't be refrozen. Lia couldn't drink nearly that much in a day, so the rest would have to be poured out.

I held on to the fridge door as a sudden pain shot through my incision.

I'd spent that whole month shaking with pain every time I pumped. Lia was born early and was so fragile that I hadn't let myself waste a single drop.

Dante quickly bought the best formula money could buy.

"I looked at the dates and thought it was from the last couple of days." He took my hand. "You can always pump more. I'll take care of everything else."

Anger knotted my stomach.

"Why didn't you even ask me?"

He opened his mouth, but he had no answer.

"So Victoria needed ice for her leg, and you thought it was fine to take out a month's worth of my breast milk without asking me?"

"No," Dante said at once. "I just didn't think it would go bad. I'll have someone buy another freezer."

He could always find the fastest way to fix things.

Another freezer couldn't give me back a month of aching breasts, a tight, burning incision, and sleepless nights spent pumping.

I pulled my hand away and texted my lawyer.

"Have the Commission approve my divorce petition as soon as possible. As of today, Dante no longer votes on behalf of the De Luca family."

My hands were still shaking when I sent it.

In the end, there had to be a line between what was his and what was mine.

  • He Chose His First Love. I Took Back His Throne   Chapter 16

On the day the divorce was announced, I took the first flight back to New York.Dante was already waiting outside the law office. He was wearing the dark suit he had worn when we got married. He didn't have any flowers this time, just a box of files in his arms. When he saw the brace on my wrist, the first thing he asked was, "Does it still hurt?""When it rains."He nodded and didn't say anything about switching doctors this time. The box contained a full inventory of assets. On top of what Lia and I were legally entitled to, Dante was offering several properties and bank accounts belonging to his family. Before the lawyer could explain, I slid the documents for those additional assets back across the table."I'm only taking back what belongs to my family."Dante stared at the stack of papers."It's the least I can do.""Every time you hurt me, you try to make up for it with some grand gesture. But I don't need one."Under the table, Dante's fingers curled into a fist."I never asked

  • He Chose His First Love. I Took Back His Throne   Chapter 15

Salvatore came on the third day of the divorce waiting period. He didn't call first. He just stood outside my apartment door with an old wicker basket. Inside were the lemon cookies I used to crave whenever I was sick as a child, and the ring of office keys my father had left with him.I didn't let him in right away. Before the christening, he was also the one who had put my trip on hold in the name of protecting me and had my luggage carried back to my room."Who sent you to talk me around this time?"Salvatore lowered his head."I came to see your hand first."His gaze fell on my cast, then drifted to my abdomen, where my surgical incision was still healing."Does it still hurt?"It was such an ordinary question, but suddenly I was fighting back tears.Since I left New York, plenty of people had asked me when I was going back, whether the docks would end up on the Romano family's bad side, and what Lia would do without a father.Hardly anyone had asked first whether I was in pain.I

  • He Chose His First Love. I Took Back His Throne   Chapter 14

Dante flew back to New York that night. The lights were still on in the living room at the Romano estate. Carmela was on the sofa. The room Victoria had stayed in had already been cleared out, but Carmela was still directing the staff to put the nursery suite back the way it was."Don't bother," Dante said. "Bianca isn't coming back."Carmela looked up."Once she's done throwing her tantrum, she'll bring the baby home. You shouldn't have let her back Victoria into a corner like that in front of outsiders."Dante threw the walkway footage and the car data onto the coffee table."Victoria has a father. She has her own estate, and she has the Valenti guards. Why did you have to bring her here?"Carmela stiffened."Someone had just tried to kill her! How was I supposed to know whether the threat was real?""You knew she had somewhere to stay." Dante took a step closer. "And you knew Bianca was getting ready to leave. Who told Victoria that Bianca's luggage was already on its way to the air

  • He Chose His First Love. I Took Back His Throne   Chapter 13

Victoria tracked me down at the docks on a Sunday afternoon.Lia had just gotten over her croup, and Rosa was holding her in the sunny yard. The moment I saw Victoria get out of the car, I had the guards take the baby inside. She wasn't wearing any makeup, and the only person with her was the Valenti family's lawyer."I'm here to negotiate a settlement.""Talk to my lawyer."She stepped in front of me."I'll leave New York. I'll never see Dante again. All I ask is that you drop the charges over the car accidents and what happened at the christening.""Did August put you up to this?"Victoria pressed her lips together.August had already suspended her from every position she held in the alliance. If the truth about the two staged car accidents and Lia's fall came to light, she stood to lose not just her freedom, but her place as heir. But none of that was my doing."Whether you leave him or not has nothing to do with me."Victoria looked at me for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed."

  • He Chose His First Love. I Took Back His Throne   Chapter 12

Dante didn't leave LA.He bought a house just outside the docks, and every morning he sent over soup, formula, and baby supplies.Sometimes it was food I liked. Sometimes it was a blanket just like the one Lia had used in New York.Every time, I had the guards send it all back untouched. On the third day, he started leaving things outside the gate and stopped asking to see me.Every day, Enzo brought me a list of what Dante had left. I never even opened the bags. It wasn't that the gifts weren't thoughtful. It was that Dante always knew how to make up for what was missing—once the danger was over. The more thoughtful his care was, the clearer it became to me that none of it could make up for the moments when I really needed him to be there. One night a week later, Lia suddenly couldn't make a sound when she cried. Her mouth was open, but all that came out of her throat was a fast, rasping wheeze, and her little face was turning red.I sat bolt upright in bed. It felt like a hand had cl

  • He Chose His First Love. I Took Back His Throne   Chapter 11

When Dante couldn't find me, he waited outside the docks all night. At lunchtime the next day, my secretary told me he still hadn't left, so I finally had someone bring him into the outer yard.I hadn't seen him in a few days, and his jaw was dark with stubble. He hadn't brought any bodyguards. He carried only the signed documents transferring the De Luca family's assets and authority back to me.And a bouquet of white roses, my favorite. When he saw the cast on my wrist, he took a step forward, and the guards blocked him."Mr. Romano."His face went pale.I took the documents and checked every page to make sure my father's delegated authority and my voting rights had been restored. The flowers stayed at his feet.Turning the pages sent pain through my right wrist.I paused. Dante reached for me immediately, and I stepped back.Slowly, he drew his hand back."I got Lia a pink diamond." Dante took a velvet jewelry box from his pocket. "She's our heir. She should have it.""No, thanks. M
