Chapter 7

Author: Crystal K
(Noelle's POV)

I watched the aftermath on a secured feed from a safe house three kilometers from the coast.

I sat by the window and watched the distant, tiny figure of a man kneeling on the sand.

Even from that far away, I could almost feel the sound of his grief in the air.

Sarah, my friend who I had "rescued" from the "accident," sat safely beside me, still shaken.

"Noelle, we were so lucky," she said. "If that private submarine hadn't picked us up when it did…"

I nodded, not telling her the submarine was a key part of my escape plan.

On the screen, Dexter was still on the beach, a madman consumed by a loss he himself had engineered.

But that had nothing to do with me anymore.

Three Months Later

"Ravencrest Industries stock fell another 15% today following rumors of internal instability."

I heard the report on the financial news as I prepped for an investor meeting.

It had been three months since my "death."

I now lived in New Moon Bay, a coastal tech hub a thousand kilometers from

Noelle's POVTwo months later, I saw the final report on the news in my office."Investigation concludes a massive gas leak caused the fatal explosion at the Ravencrest Industries headquarters. CEO Dexter Ravencrest and his partner, Jenica, are confirmed deceased."The news anchor's voice was flat, reporting the end of a dynasty like it was the evening weather. For a fleeting moment, a ghost of an old ache passed through me. A memory of a different girl, dizzy with joy on the day she learned the Alpha King was her fated mate. A girl who believed in forevers. He had knelt before me and sworn that his wolf, that fate itself, had chosen me.It was only later that he chose power and legacy instead.I pushed the thoughts away and turned off the monitor.Sterling Genetics had become a titan in the biotech industry. Our gene-stabilization technology was on the fast track for FDA approval, and the company was now valued at over five billion dollars.Liam knocked on the door. "Dr. Sterling,

Dexter's POVIt was late when Dexter drove back to the Royal Headquarters tower. The pain in his chest was a physical, gnawing void. The loss of the mate bond was an amputation of the soul.He stopped the car in front of the monolithic building and looked up.And he saw something that made his already broken heart stop.On the edge of the penthouse terrace, thirty stories up, Jenica was standing with the baby in her arms. The night wind whipped her hair around her face, making her look like a vengeful spirit."Jenica!" he yelled, bolting from the car and into the building. The elevator was too slow. He ran up the emergency stairs, his body screaming in protest. When he burst onto the rooftop terrace, Jenica turned to face him. Her eyes were wide with a crazed, desperate fire."Dexter," she cried out, her voice thin against the wind, "if you don't acknowledge him as your true heir, I'll jump! I'll take him with me!""Jenica, calm down," Dexter said, slowly approaching her. "Give me t

"Noelle…"Even though I couldn't hear him, the name seemed to echo in my mind, a ghost of a connection I thought was long dead.I ignored it, continuing to review the data on my screen."Dr. Sterling, should I call security?" Liam asked, his voice laced with concern."No," I said, putting down the tablet. "Let him in."Ten minutes later, Dexter stood in the doorway of my office. He looked like a stray wolf, beaten and abandoned, his royal aura shredded to rags."Noelle, I knew you were alive," he said, his voice choked with raw emotion as he staggered into the room. "I always knew.""Congratulations on your detective work," I said without looking up from my desk. "What do you want?""I want you back." He fell to his knees in front of my desk. "Noelle, please. Come home."I finally looked up, my eyes cold."Go back?" I let out a small, humorless laugh. "Go back to being your pretty little ornament?""No!" he said urgently. "Everything will be different. I see Jenica for what she is. I t

  • He Chose an Heir, so I Faked My Death   Chapter 6

Dexter's POVFor three months, Dexter was a ghost haunting his own life."His Majesty cannot continue like this!" Elder Erin's voice cut through the council room's tense silence. "The company's stock has plummeted, three major projects have been lost, and the board is demanding answers! The pack is rudderless!"Dexter sat on the throne, an empty shell in a king's robes. For three months, he had handled almost no pack business. He spent his days walking the coastline and his nights drinking himself into oblivion."I don't care," he rasped, his voice rough from disuse."You don't care?" Jenica swept into the room, holding a two-month-old infant in her arms. "Dexter, have you forgotten your duty? You are the Alpha King!"Dexter didn't even glance at her."And," Jenica pressed on, her voice hardening, "as the mother of your prince, I have the right to be involved in royal decisions. I've already taken the liberty of contacting several investors to stabilize the company's management.""Wha

Dexter's POV"What?"The word echoed in the opulent suite, but it sounded like it came from a million miles away. The guard repeated the impossible news. "The yacht was caught in the storm around midnight, and then it exploded. The Coast Guard said the flames lit up the sky for miles.""No." He shook his head, a denial forming in his throat. "Impossible.""Your Majesty…""IMPOSSIBLE!" he roared, his Alpha power slamming into the room like a physical wave, making the crystal glasses on the bar tremble.Jenica woke with a start, her hands flying to her stomach. "Dexter, what's wrong?"He didn't answer her. He grabbed the guard by the collar, his eyes wild. "Say it again.""Miss Noelle's… her yacht… it exploded," the guard stammered, terrified. "The search team…"He shoved the guard away and sprinted from the room."Dexter!" Jenica called after him. "The prince needs you!"He didn't stop. The elevator was too slow. He took the stairs, flying down thirty floors without feeling the burn
