Julian’s hand was still against my back when I woke again. I must have only been asleep for an hour, maybe less. The room was dark except for the thin line of streetlight slipping in through the blinds. I could hear his breathing, steady but not deep enough for sleep.

I shifted slightly. “You’re awake,” I said quietly.

“I am,” he replied, his voice low. “Have been for a while.”

I rolled onto my back to see his face. His eyes were open, watching the ceiling like it might have an answer written on it. “Can’t sleep?”

“Not really. Too much in my head.”

I waited, giving him space to continue if he wanted to. For a moment, it seemed like he might keep whatever was in his head to himself, the way he had been doing for weeks. But then he exhaled slowly and turned toward me.

“I think I’ve been doing this wrong,” he said.

“Doing what wrong?”

“Balancing it all,” he admitted. “I’ve been so focused on the work, on getting it right for the clients, that I didn’t notice I was letting it take over ev

It began quietly, the way changes often do. There was no announcement, no sudden shift, just small differences that added up over the days. Julian was still there in the mornings, still making coffee, still asking how I slept. But his eyes were often somewhere else, even when they were looking at me.At first, I thought it was just the boutique schedule pulling us in different directions. I had been buried in custom orders, and he had been taking on more consulting work. We crossed paths in the kitchen, traded notes about what needed to be picked up, and promised to catch up later. Later kept moving farther away. One afternoon, I found him in the living room with his laptop open and papers spread across the coffee table. The light from the window fell across his face, but he didn’t look up when I walked in.“Another client?” I asked.“Two, actually,” he said, still typing. “Deadlines are overlapping.”I sat in the chair across from him. “Since when are you taking on two at once?”He g

I was looking for my long wool coat, the one I had worn last winter when the winds came early. The boutique was colder these days, and I had promised myself I would be better prepared for the season this time. The coat was somewhere in the bedroom closet, probably wedged between the newer jackets I had not worn as much. I pulled open the door and began moving hangers aside, the soft whisper of fabric filling the quiet. The top shelf caught my eye. There were the usual boxes—some holding extra scarves, one with a pair of shoes I had worn only once—but in the far corner, just beyond the reach of the light, sat a box I did not remember placing there. It was a pale brown cardboard, the kind that came with neither label nor logo, the corners softened by time. I stood on my toes, brushing my fingers over the surface before pulling it down.Julian was in the living room, absorbed in whatever book he had taken from the shelf this week. I carried the box to the bed, my hands careful in a way t

It had been years since I last walked down this street. The buildings were the same height they had always been, leaning slightly toward each other as though they were in on a secret, but the storefronts had changed. The bakery on the corner had a new name, the café I once visited almost daily was now a hair salon, and the grocery store’s faded sign had been replaced with one in a bright, unfamiliar font.Julian kept a gentle pace beside me. He didn’t say much, but I knew he was watching for any small sign that this was too much. I had not decided until that morning that I wanted to come here. The thought had been sitting at the back of my mind since the boutique reopened, and for some reason, today felt like the right day.We stopped in front of the building. The entrance was narrower than I remembered, the door painted a darker shade of green. My old landlord had agreed to let me in for a short visit, though I could tell from his tone on the phone that he didn’t quite understand why

The table had been set since late afternoon. My mother had insisted on arranging the place settings herself, even though I offered to do it. She said it was part of the ritual, that a table felt wrong if she didn’t touch each plate before it was filled. When Julian and I arrived, the house smelled faintly of roast chicken and thyme. My father was in the kitchen, carving meat with the careful precision of someone who believed the slices mattered just as much as the seasoning. My mother moved more slowly than she had before her illness, but she still made her way around the table, straightening a fork here, adjusting a folded napkin there. We were waiting for my younger brother and his family. The chairs were all in their usual places, except for one. It sat at the far end, a little apart from the rest, the seat pushed in neatly under the tablecloth. I noticed it the moment I walked in.It had belonged to my grandmother when she was alive. She used to sit there, always with a small glas

I was in the kitchen early, rinsing strawberries in a small colander while the kettle hummed on the stove. Julian was still asleep, and the apartment had that particular stillness it only seemed to hold before the day began. I had planned to spend the morning answering emails from the Kyoto artisans and finalizing next month’s display schedule at the boutique. The phone rang before the water boiled. It was my mother. Her voice sounded lighter than usual at first, as if she didn’t want to trouble me, but there was something under it—a thin thread that made my stomach tighten.“I do not want to worry you,” she said, “but I am not feeling well. It has been going on for a few days. Your father thinks I should get it checked, but I thought I would tell you first.”I set the colander in the sink and reached for a towel. “What kind of not feeling well?”She hesitated. “It is probably nothing. Some tiredness, some dizziness. I thought it was the weather, but it is not going away.”“Have you b
