Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
I was so mad that I nearly laughed.

Staring straight into Warner's eyes, I asked, "Mr. Maxwell, are you sure you want me to apologize and compensate?"

Warner's expression remained dark and unreadable, while Isabel quickly tugged at the hem of my shirt.

"Don't push it, Flynn," she whispered to calm me down. "Hayden is Natasha's son, so you can't afford to mess with him. Mr. Maxwell is counting on him to secure the partnership with Avenel Group."

I couldn't help but scoff. "He tells you his mom is Natasha Belmont, and you guys just blindly believe him. Did he bring his birth certificate to his onboarding interview?"

She took out her phone and tapped on Hayden's social media account. "It's true. Ms. Belmont personally sent him to the office on his onboarding day."

I looked at the figures in the photo and nearly dropped my jaw in shock.

My stunningly beautiful aunt, Natasha Belmont, stood in front of a luxury car looking sharp and confident, and Hayden indeed stood right beside her.

He had even captioned the post. "Deeply grateful to Mom for taking time out of her busy schedule to drop me off for my internship. I promise I'll never let you down."

I immediately dialed Aunt Natasha's number, but all I heard was a mechanical voice telling me that her phone was powered off.

When Hayden saw that I stubbornly refused to apologize, he stared at me viciously. "Don't regret this, Flynn. I'll make you pay for it."

The next day, I learned what Hayden meant by that threat.

At the recognition gala, the Top Sales Performer award and an 800-thousand-dollar bonus payout, which should have belonged to me, were awarded to him instead.

On the presentation slides, they hadn't even had the chance to swap my name with his for the acceptance speech.

This was blatant daylight robbery. Raging fury erupted in my chest.

I immediately demanded an explanation. "On what metric was the Top Sales Performer decided?

"My total project sales this month exceeded one billion dollars and generated millions of dollars in net profit for the company, outperforming the runner-up by a staggering five-million-dollar profit margin.

"Hayden, on the other hand, hasn't closed a single deal. So, my question for the executive board is—on what grounds are you handing my award to him?"

A dead silence fell over the room, while the finance director and sales director exchanged looks, but neither dared say a single word.

Hayden shot me an arrogant look. "Obviously, your projects were secured through shady means. The company can't tolerate such disgraceful, despicable behavior.

"As of right now, we're just revoking your Top Sales Performer eligibility. But if you continue damaging our corporate reputation with your filthy, underhanded methods, termination is what awaits you next."

Shaking with pure rage, I swept my eyes across the executives sitting on the main stage.

They were the same leaders who used to praise my performance and call me a rising star with endless potential. Now, all of them avoided my gaze and lowered their heads like spineless cowards.

I looked at the highest-ranking executive in the room, Warner.

"Mr. Maxwell, is that what you think, too?"

Warner was clearly displeased with being publicly called out. He impatiently frowned and replied, "The company has its variables to consider, Flynn. Do not disrupt a formal recognition gala over such a trivial matter. You need to look at the bigger picture."

"The bigger picture?"

My eyes turned red-rimmed, and my voice started trembling.

"Is your 'bigger picture' about me working all year, grinding past 12:00 am every single night to secure projects I work myself to the bone for, only for them to be handed over to someone else as his own achievement?

"You're completely erasing my hard work based on a baseless rumor he made up and sitting there, doing nothing.

"Let me ask you—where's the fairness in this? Where's justice? Don't you feel even a shred of guilt treating an employee who's contributed so much to the company like this?"

Warner had no response to my questions, while Hayden showed zero shame. He looked at me, raised his chin, and scoffed in disdain.

"Justice? Don't be so naive, Flynn. In the real world, justice belongs to whoever holds the power.

"If you want justice, find yourself a wealthy mom to stand up for you. But it's a pity you don't have one."

As Warner spoke, he wired the full 800-thousand-dollar bonus to me on the spot.He nearly made me throw up in disgust.Even at this point, he was still dreaming about partnering with Avenel Group. The sheer audacity made me desperate to know how someone could be this thick-skinned.Staring straight at him, I asked, "Mr. Maxwell, you don't honestly think I canceled the partnership just because I was bitter over 800 thousand dollars, do you?"He froze, and his voice completely lost its edge as he stammered, "I-Is that not it?" Before I could respond, Aunt Natasha said, "Of course not. Flynn holds 20% of Avenel Group's shares and receives hundreds of millions of dollars in annual dividends."As the only son of the Calders, he'll inherit a fortune worth tens of billions of dollars."800 thousand dollars is less than a tenth of his monthly allowance. What makes you think he cares about that money?"Warner's face flushed red. He was so regretful that he wanted nothing but to slap hi

"But you, Caelum Hugh," I continued. "You've always pretended to be innocent, naive, and pitiful. Aunt Natasha felt sorry for you, so she wrote you that recommendation letter."That day, she did you a favor by giving you a ride to your internship, yet you used her kindness to spread lies!"Hayden's face turned paler until it was completely ash-gray."I-I genuinely see Ms. Belmont as my mom. I've looked up to her ever since I was a young boy, and I wasn't lying. Mom… I mean, Ms. Belmont, please trust me. I really want to be your son."Aunt Natasha threw him a disgusted glare and solemnly said, "If Flynn hadn't told me everything, I'd still have no idea you've been using my name to pick on others and throw your weight around."If you were truly struggling and helpless, the Belmonts could easily afford to support you. I would even be willing to help you achieve your dreams."But Caelum, you had the audacity to target my most beloved nephew. You've completely disappointed me and seve

"Ms. Belmont, we offended Mr. Calder only because we were trying to protect your son's reputation. Please consider our kind intentions and let us off the hook."More people bowed and apologized to me, not because they genuinely realized their mistakes, but because they were terrified of the Belmont family's power. After all, with the Belmont family's status as Tidehaven's wealthiest tycoon, they could effortlessly bankrupt any of the so-called elite families with a snap of their fingers.Aunt Natasha shifted her gaze toward Hayden. Cold sweat poured down his face, and he trembled uncontrollably.Shrinking back in fear, he whimpered out a weak "Mom".There wasn't a shred of warmth in Aunt Natasha's eyes as she stared him down."Caelum Hugh, didn't I make it clear that you're not supposed to call me that? Have you forgotten what happened to the others?"Hayden snapped his head up. Color instantly drained from his face as he frantically shook his head."No, Mom… I mean, Ms. Belmon

Hayden picked up his phone again to show everyone a few more photos, but none of them were private photos of him and Natasha. They were all group shots of several people."These were taken when Mom and I went to an orphanage for a charity donation," he explained. "This is more than enough proof that she's my mom, isn't it?"Someone in the crowd said, "Ms. Belmont is indeed very passionate about charity. I heard she's sponsored many underprivileged students, and she's very kind-hearted.""Looking at it this way, Hayden must really be her son."Hayden shot me a provocative smirk. "You're no match for me, Flynn. I'm getting the contract signed today."He turned to Warner and anxiously urged, "What are you waiting for? Let's sign it now!"With that, he dragged Warner and rushed him toward the signing table."Hold it!" I coldly called out and reached out to block his path.Looking at him, I let out a cold laugh. "A few photos can't prove anything. Let's call the cops so they can inv

Hayden and Warner seamlessly tag-teamed and branded me as some kind of male escort. The whispers around the room grew cruder by the second."Flynn looks like a decent young man. How could he do something so shameless?""I remember him. He secured our company's project, and he's definitely got his means. He wrapped our female director completely around his finger, and she voluntarily shaved 3% off our profit margins for him.""Young guys nowadays love taking shortcuts. He's definitely got the looks and clearly knows how to leverage what he's got.""Ugh, please! Call it whatever you want, but he's still selling himself. How did security let someone like him into a prestigious contract signing by Avenel Group?"Hayden shot me a triumphant look and grew more disdainful. "Did you hear that, Flynn? Get the hell out of here before you stain Avenel Group's floors."A piece of trash like you isn't even fit to lick Mom's boots, so how dare you pretend to be my cousin and forge a company s

The hall instantly fell into a dead silence. Everyone's gazes darted back and forth between Hayden and me."Flynn just said Ms. Belmont is his aunt, which would make him and her son cousins. How could he and Hayden not know each other?""One of them has got to be lying. Who knew that a contract signing event would turn into a real-versus-fake heir drama? This is going to be one hell of a show."Hayden's face went completely pale, and panic flashed briefly across his expression."No way! He must be lying! My cousin lives abroad year-round. If he came back, there's no way I wouldn't have known about it."Besides, Mom's last name is Belmont. How could my cousin be a Calder?"I scoffed and replied, "Can't I take my mom's last name? She suffered severe complications when she had me, and everyone in our circle knows that my dad loved her to death. Not only did he get a vasectomy right after, but he also insisted that his only son take her family name, Calder."That's common knowledge.
