Chapter 3

Author: Myosotis
By the time I returned to the Romano estate, Luca’s signature was already hidden inside the dissolution papers.

He sat beside me in the car, silent all the way back from the clinic. Smoke still clung to his coat, and every turn of the road pulled at the wound beneath my bandage.

When the gates opened, he finally spoke.

“My parents asked us to join them for dinner. My mother had the kitchen make what you like.”

Before I could answer, one of Celeste’s men crossed the drive and bent close to Luca’s ear.

Luca’s expression changed.

“Celeste is still shaken from the fire,” he said. “She can’t stand the smell of smoke. I’ll check on her first.”

He left before dinner began.

The Romano dining room was quiet without him. Donna Sofia sat across from me, her eyes fixed on the empty chair at my side until her face slowly hardened.

“He went to Celeste again.”

I lowered my fork.

The old Don said nothing, but the look he gave her was warning enough. Donna Sofia ignored it.

“That woman has never been as helpless as she pretends. If Luca knew she was once promised to Matteo Vitale, he would not keep rushing to save her.”

“I know,” I said.

Donna Sofia looked at me.

Celeste had once been promised to Matteo Vitale, heir to a rival family. The Romanos had kept it from Luca because they feared he would cross into Vitale territory and start a war for a woman who had already chosen another house once.

In the last life, I had used that secret to comfort myself. I told myself Luca only mourned Celeste because he never knew the truth.

This time, the truth no longer helped me.

Donna Sofia’s voice softened.

“Elena, we thought Luca felt differently about you. That was why we accepted this marriage.”

I looked at the empty chair beside me.

“If he did, he would be here.”

The old Don finally looked up.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m leaving him.”

The room went still.

I folded my hands in my lap and kept my voice calm.

“The dissolution papers are signed. Once the family lawyer files them, Luca and I will no longer be married.”

Donna Sofia’s eyes widened. “Luca signed?”

“He thought it was another sentimental promise.”

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Ash drifted against the windows, and far beyond the estate walls, sirens still echoed from the docks.

“Please don’t tell him yet,” I said. “Let the lawyer file it first. After that, whatever he chooses will no longer trap me.”

That night, I returned to my room early.

The wound at my side had started to throb, and I had just taken off my coat when the door was pushed open.

Luca stood outside, soot on his coat and anger hardening his eyes.

“So you did complain to them.”

I looked at him. “What happened?”

“My mother went to Celeste. They argued. Bianca ran out during the shouting and disappeared.” His voice turned cold. “Are you satisfied now?”

For a moment, I said nothing.

Then I reached for my coat.

“I’ll find her.”

Luca gave a short, bitter laugh.

“Don’t pretend to be kind. If Bianca is hurt, that is on you.”

I walked past him without answering.

Celeste had been placed in the guest house near the lower garden. The lights were still on when I arrived. Through the smoke-stained window, I saw Luca holding her while she cried against his chest.

I looked away and kept searching.

The fire crews had left the garden paths slick with water and foam. My side hurt with every step, and the night air worked through my dress, but I checked the hedges, the fountain, the servants’ path, and the storage rooms behind the kitchens.

Near dawn, I heard a faint cry from the ruined greenhouse beyond the lemon trees.

Bianca was trapped beneath a fallen shelf, soaked and shivering. A pale ribbon was tangled around one paw.

It was the same ribbon Celeste had worn earlier.

I freed the cat and carried her back against my chest.

Celeste rushed out as soon as she saw us.

“Bianca!”

She took the trembling cat from me, then turned to Luca with fresh tears in her eyes.

“She’s freezing. Luca, please, we have to take her to the family vet. Cats can die from shock, can’t they?”

Luca looked at me then.

For one brief second, his gaze stopped on my face, then moved to the blood seeping through my bandage.

I held the doorframe and said, “I’m fine. Take them.”

Celeste sobbed his name.

The hesitation in his eyes disappeared.

Luca took Bianca from her, helped Celeste into the black SUV, and left without another word.

When the car disappeared down the drive, the strength I had been holding together all night finally broke.

I woke in the clinic after sunrise.

No one from the Romano family was beside the bed.

I did not call Luca, and I did not wait for him to remember me. I signed the discharge papers myself, returned to the estate for my passport, the dissolution papers, and one small suitcase, then left before anyone came looking.

Seven years later, I returned to the city for a restoration commission.By then, the Romano name no longer hurt to see. I had finished my training, built my own reputation, and learned to live without waiting for anyone to choose me.Before I left, Donna Sofia invited me back to the estate.I went because the past no longer had the power to keep me away.Luca was waiting in the study. He looked older than I expected. The sharpness was still there, but years of regret had worn it down into something quieter.“Elena,” he said.“Luca.”He looked at me for a long moment.“You look well.”“I am.”His eyes moved to my hand.“You never remarried.”“No.”For one second, hope appeared in his face.I ended it before he could misunderstand.“I chose my work. That has nothing to do with you.”The light in his eyes faded.Donna Sofia told me what happened after I left. Luca had lost his place on the inner council for a time, and the Vitales used Celeste’s stolen papers to damage several Romano rout

Luca turned toward me.The corridor was still in chaos. Matteo’s men were taking Celeste away, clinic staff were clearing the hall, and Bianca had vanished beneath a bench, but Luca seemed to hear none of it.His eyes stayed on me.“You remember everything,” he said.“Yes.”His throat moved, and for a moment he looked less like the head of the Romano family than the man who had finally understood that the past had never belonged to him alone.“In the other life, I saved you first,” he said. “Celeste died before I could reach her. I told myself I did the right thing because you were my wife, but I could never stop seeing the fire.”I waited. His eyes were red.“Every birthday, every anniversary, every dinner with the family, I saw her in that warehouse. I thought if I went back and saved her, the guilt would end. I thought I could come back to you without her shadow between us.”“You wanted to save her first and still keep me afterward.”His face paled.“I did not think of it like that.

The next time I went to the Romano clinic, Luca was already waiting outside the examination room.He stood by the window with his coat over one arm, looking as if he had not slept. When the doctor told me the wound was healing and that rest would be enough, his expression eased for only a moment before his gaze fell to the bandage beneath my coat.“I should have brought you here myself that night,” he said.I buttoned my coat. “That night is over.”Before he could answer, the corridor doors opened, and Celeste hurried in with two guards behind her. Her face was pale, her eyes wet, and she went straight toward Luca as if the rest of us were not there.“Luca, thank God I found you. Someone has been following me since yesterday. I think it’s the Vitales. Please, I can’t go back there.”In the past, he would have taken her away before she finished speaking. This time, he stepped aside before her hands could reach him.Celeste froze.Luca looked at her without warmth. “Are they following yo

After leaving my empty room, Luca began looking for me.The old Voss villa was empty. The apartment I used before our marriage had been locked for years. I was not at the clinic, not at any hotel under my name, and not in any Romano safe house.Every place he thought I might go only proved how little he knew about where I would choose to disappear.By evening, he returned to the estate. The house was too quiet. My dresses were still upstairs, my name was still on the household records, but the few things that mattered had disappeared with me. For the first time, Luca understood that I had not left in anger.I had left with a plan.Near the service entrance, two maids stopped talking the moment they saw him.“What were you saying?” he asked.Neither of them answered.Luca’s voice lowered.“Speak.”One maid finally lowered her head.“I saw Miss Celeste last night. Before Donna Sofia went to the guest house, Miss Celeste carried Bianca toward the old greenhouse.”The other maid went pale.

Luca remembered the clinic only after Bianca had been treated and Celeste had finally stopped crying. When he arrived, my room was already empty. The sheets had been changed, and the discharge form lay clipped to my medical file. The doctor met him in the hallway.“Where is Elena?”“She left after sunrise.”“With that wound?”The doctor’s face tightened. “She should not have been walking at all. The injury reopened. By the time she was brought in, she had lost blood and collapsed from exhaustion.”Luca took the file.Delayed treatment. Blunt-force trauma. Excessive strain. He drove back to the estate and went straight to my room. Most of my dresses were still in the wardrobe, but the things I actually needed were gone.Only then did Luca go to the old Don’s study.Donna Sofia was there with the old Don and the family lawyer. When she saw the medical file in Luca’s hand, her expression changed from worry to disappointment.“You remembered her now?”Luca ignored the accusation.“Where is
