Chapter 4

Author: Sour Grapes
I remembered the day I resigned; I was filled with anxiety.

With no income and little savings, I felt incredibly insecure.

Seth noticed my unease and gently wrapped his arms around me, softly stroking my hair.

He said, "If your job makes you unhappy, just leave it. There's no need to stay in a place that brings you down. I'm your husband—what's mine is yours. I'll work hard to support our family, and I'll always be your strongest support."

Back then, I trusted him completely.

I set my worries aside and focused on caring for him, making him a different breakfast every day.

But now, my unemployment had become the very weapon he used against me.

From the other end came his irritated voice. "Then let's get a divorce."

My heart sank.

The phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor with a dull thud.

I had never, not once, considered divorcing Seth...

Since that bitter argument, Seth and I hadn't spoken.

He unlinked my name from our joint bank accounts.

My health continued to deteriorate; my hair fell out in clumps, and though I was always exhausted, I couldn’t sleep at all. I felt like I was getting sick and thought it was just a cold.

I went to the hospital and had some scans done, but the doctor told me I needed a brain CT. I felt a wave of panic, my mind adrift, grasping at nothing solid.

The results came out half an hour later. I collected the scans from the self-service machine, but as I was heading upstairs to find the doctor, I unexpectedly ran into Lisa.

She was wearing loose clothing, her hand resting on her belly, coming out of the gynecologist's office.

Behind her was Seth.

I saw her gently caressing her stomach, and Seth was watching her intently, as if afraid she might stumble—just like a doting husband and wife.

I gripped the scans tightly, trying to turn around and head back downstairs.

But Lisa spotted me and called out, "Melody!"

I stiffly turned to face her as she cheerfully asked, "What brings you to the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?"

As she spoke, her arm was still linked with Seth's.

I didn’t want to engage, so I tried to sidestep them and head upstairs, but I tripped over something.

I fell hard, angrily kicking at whatever had tripped me. My hands hit the floor, scraping against it and drawing blood, and the scans went flying out of my grasp.

Lisa crouched down, clutching her foot in pain.

"Ouch, Melody, why aren’t you watching where you're going? Seth, it really hurts."

Seth immediately knelt down to check her foot and, only after confirming she was okay, stood up.

He looked at me with disdain. "Melody, can't you stop being so reckless all the time?"

Without even considering what had just happened, he scolded me, completely ignoring the fact that I had also fallen.

I shot back, "Can't you see why I fell in the first place?"

It was only then that Seth seemed to notice my hand, scraped and bleeding on the floor.

His eyes shifted with a hint of guilt.

I pushed myself up to sit and pulled a tissue from my pocket, wiping the blood from the floor.

Slowly, I got to my feet, glancing around until I spotted my scans.

I walked over to pick them up, but Lisa glanced down and deliberately stepped on them.

I squatted, trying to pull the scans out from under her foot, but they wouldn’t budge. I tugged harder, but still, they didn’t move an inch.

Anger and frustration surged through me.

Who did she think she was, this mistress brazenly challenging me, the woman he married, right to my face?

So, I raised my hand and slapped her hard across the face.

  • He Fell in Love with Me Too Late   Chapter 10

I smiled, reassuring Leah that I no longer cared about what happened to him. Whether he was happy or miserable, it had nothing to do with me anymore. Not long after, death came for me. In my final moments, I only let Zachary stay by my side."Zachary, do you like me?" I asked, lying weakly on the hospital bed.He snorted. "Who would like you? Don’t flatter yourself."I chuckled softly. "Good. Don’t like me, Zachary. I’m about to die."His eyes reddened, and he snapped, "Don't say things like that, Melody!"His tone was harsh, but his hand, hanging at his side, was trembling.I looked at him seriously and said, "Alright, I won’t say it anymore, but really, you shouldn’t love me."I stared at him without blinking. I saw his eyes grow even redder, tears welling up, and he turned his head away, refusing to look at me.I quietly closed my eyes.I heard him begin to cry, no longer holding back. I felt him gently shaking me, but my eyelids felt as heavy as lead. I couldn’t open them, and

I gave a bitter laugh. "If you have something to deal with, just go."Seth answered the call, his expression immediately changing. Without hesitation, he turned and walked out.At the door, Leah shouted after him, "Hey, you're just going to leave like that? If you walk out now, don't ever come back!"I sent Seth a message, "Monday morning, 8 a.m., in front of the lawyer’s office. I hope you won't be late."Then, I deleted his contact and blocked him on everything. On Monday, I felt surprisingly good. I put on some light makeup and had Leah braid my hair. Looking in the mirror, I saw a much younger version of myself smiling back. For a moment, it felt like I was back in my vibrant university days—when I hadn’t met Seth.I arrived at the lawyer’s office right on time at 8 a.m. Zachary was waiting in his car. Seth stood at the entrance, holding our marriage certificate, his head lowered. When he heard the sound of footsteps, he looked up.I realized that in just a few days, he had

As Zachary turned away, he wiped his eyes roughly. I felt like crying too, but I blinked hard, forcing back the sting of tears.Outside the window, the cheerful chatter of birds filled the air, their lively song breaking the silence. I turned my head, gazing outside, a trace of longing in my eyes.Suddenly, the sound of a plastic bag dropping to the floor pulled me back to reality."Why are you back so quickly..." I began with a smile, but my words faltered when I saw who had arrived. There was Seth, looking anxious and flustered, a plastic bag at his feet, with Leah standing awkwardly beside him."Melody, I swear I didn't mean to bring him here," Leah blurted out, fiddling nervously with her fingers. "I just ran into him at the hospital, and I couldn't help it—I started yelling at him and accidentally let it slip."I watched Leah, noticing her frustration, and let out a soft laugh. "It's fine. Maybe it's for the best. Some things need to be cleared up."I asked Leah to wait outside

Lost in thought, I was startled by a knock at the door. My mother called out and went to open it.Seth walked in, carrying bags full of things, speaking sweetly to charm my mother and Jasmine, who both smiled, clearly won over. After some small talk, he said, "Mom, it's all my fault. I upset Melody yesterday, so I rushed over first thing this morning, afraid you'd be mad and not let her come back with me."My mother, laughing cheerfully, replied, "Oh, of course not," and immediately encouraged Seth to take me back. I resisted, but she shot me a warning look and discreetly pinched my arm.I ended up leaving with Seth. As we reached the gate of the complex, I yanked my hand free from his.Seth turned around, rubbing his temples. "Melody, stop making a scene. Your mom wants you to come back with me. If you don't, where are you going to go?"He went on, confidently weighing the pros and cons, implying I couldn't possibly manage without him."I don’t need you to care," I shot back. "I c

He froze for a moment, then slowly spoke, "Are you leaving?"I nodded. "We should take some time apart to cool down.""Since you're back, I'll return the keys to you. This house is yours; it should go back to you."With that, I grabbed my suitcase and made to leave. Seth suddenly stood up, blocking my way."Don't go," he said, his breath heavy with the smell of alcohol, his tone carrying a hint of something almost like...pleading.I shook my head, thinking I must have imagined it. "Seth, if you love someone else, just let me go," I replied. But he pulled me into his arms with a sudden force. He was mumbling something, but I couldn't make it out—and didn't want to. I struggled violently, trying to break free, but he held me tight, his eyes closed, slowly lowering his head. Was he trying to kiss me?I fought back, managing to break away, and slapped him hard across the face. His head snapped to the side from the impact. After a long moment, he turned back to me, his eyes clear. He

"Ah!" Lisa screamed in pain as tears streamed down her face. She jumped back, clutching her cheek, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked pitifully at Seth.Seth took a step forward and shoved me aside. I stumbled back a few steps, barely catching myself against the wall."Enough, Melody!" he shouted, "Look at yourself—you’re acting like a crazy woman!"I shot back, "She stepped on my scans and refused to move. Could your bias be any more obvious, Seth?"He fell silent as if he had only just realized I was at the hospital because I was sick. His brows furrowed, and a flicker of concern appeared in his eyes. "Are you sick?"I bent down to pick up my scans from the floor, hesitating for a moment, wanting to say something. But Lisa jumped in first, "You just caught a cold. Did you really need to get scans for that?"Seth exhaled sharply, feeling relieved. "A cold? Do you have to be so dramatic about it? Lisa is pregnant, for heaven's sake."I scoffed at him. "And what does her b
