The Moment That Shattered Me

last update Last Updated: 2025-03-15 07:40:20

The house was quiet. Too quiet.

I should have known something was wrong the moment I stepped inside. Usually, when I returned from a trip, he would be there—smiling, arms open, ready to pull me into a hug like he had missed me. But today, there was nothing. Just silence.

I sighed, dropping my bags by the door. Maybe he was out. Maybe he didn’t even realize I was home yet.

I pulled out my phone to call him, but then I saw his on the counter. I frowned. He never left his phone lying around.

Something told me to check it. I wasn’t the type to snoop, but this strange gut feeling I couldn’t shake pushed me forward. I picked it up, the screen lighting up instantly. He didn’t even have a password. I swiped up and clicked on his recent messages.

The last contact he texted was her. My best friend.

I smiled for a second, relieved. Maybe they were just talking about me, planning something sweet. Maybe—

Then I saw the message.

"My baby, I can’t wait to see you again."

My breath hitched. My heart skipped a beat. My baby?

Confused, I scrolled up. More messages. More secrets. More lies.

"I’m just after her money. Once I get enough, I’ll leave her."

"I’m planning and collecting a huge sum from her and her father."

"I’ll use her and dump her."

The words blurred. My fingers trembled. I had to be imagining things. This couldn’t be real. This couldn’t be him.

I sucked in a shaky breath, blinking fast to clear my vision. Then, another message appeared. A name. A name that made my stomach drop.

"Our child just kicked."

Child? Our child?

Before I could even process it, I heard movement upstairs. Laughter. A soft moan.

My legs felt weak, but I moved anyway, my feet dragging toward the staircase. One step. Then another. My heart pounded so loudly I could hear it in my ears.

I reached the bedroom door—our bedroom door—and it wasn’t closed. It was slightly open. Enough for me to see inside.

And that was when my world shattered.

There they were. Him. Her. Wrapped in white towels, skin still damp, their bodies pressed together in an intimate embrace. She giggled, and he leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, slow kiss. His hands roamed her body, fingers tracing over her stomach—her pregnant stomach.

My breath caught in my throat, a strangled noise escaping before I could stop it.

They froze. He turned first, his eyes meeting mine, widening in horror. Then she turned, her lips parting as if she had something to say, some pathetic excuse to give.

But there was nothing. No excuse in the world could undo what I had just seen.

The betrayal. The lies. The truth.

And just like that, the love I had for them both turned to ashes.

I stood frozen in the doorway, my hands trembling, my heart shattering into pieces so small I knew they could never be put back together.

He took a step toward me, his towel hanging loosely around his waist, his face filled with something that almost looked like guilt—but I knew better.

“I can explain, my love,” he started, his voice soft, almost pleading. “It was a mistake.”

A mistake?

I let out a broken laugh, my chest tightening as I turned my gaze to her. My best friend. My sister in everything but blood. The woman I had trusted with my secrets, my fears, my life. She didn’t look guilty. Not even a little.

She stood there, chin lifted, eyes cold, her hand resting protectively over the swell of her stomach. My stomach twisted in disgust.

I had given them everything. Everything.

For years, I had been more than just a girlfriend to him. More than just a best friend to her. I had been their provider, their protector. I had poured my love, my money, my time into them. And this… this was how they repaid me?

My vision blurred with unshed tears as I took a shaky step back. My body screamed at me to run, but my mind was trapped in the moment, replaying every memory, every sacrifice.

I had paid his tuition when he had nothing. I had supported her when she was at her lowest. I had stood by them, lifted them, loved them.

And now, they stood before me—together.

My chest ached, my lungs burning as if I couldn’t get enough air.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to cry. I wanted to tear this whole world apart.

But all I did was stand there, paralyzed by the weight of betrayal.
