Chapter 2

Auteur: Ginger
That night in bed, I turned down Theo's advances.

By now, just the thought of his hands on me made my skin crawl.

In the middle of the night, I was woken by muffled sounds. I rolled over and saw the light on in the walk-in closet.

"Don't worry, I'm coming right now. Stop crying, okay? Just wait for me."

His voice dripped with concern and urgency. I didn't even have to guess who he was talking to. Of course it was Sophia.

Theo crept back into the bedroom, trying to grab the car keys in the dark.

I flicked on the bedside lamp. He froze.

"You're awake?"

Theo flashed me a smile. "I need to step out. Sophia tried to take off the ring before her shower, and it's stuck on her finger."

He held up his phone to show me. In the photo, Sophia's slender fingers wore the glittering ring.

"See? Her finger's all red and swollen. I can't just ignore this. I need to go check on her."

He leaned in to kiss me. I turned my face away, got out of bed, and stood barefoot by the window.

"Theo, I want to call that designer tomorrow. About remodeling the house."

He stopped in his tracks.

We'd picked out that award-winning designer ages ago.

The plan was to get married once his pack was doing well, and before the wedding, renovate the villa exactly the way I wanted.

Theo's face went stiff. He forced an awkward smile.

"Joey, the renovation isn't urgent."

"Sophia's scared and crying. You know she's just a regular Omega. She's never dealt with something like this before. If she can't get the ring off, her finger could get hurt. I need to go see her first."

"Be reasonable. Her health is more important than remodeling."

I didn't argue. I just gave a small nod.

Theo smiled with relief and came over to hold me.

"I knew you'd understand. I'm heading out now. Get some more sleep."

After he left, I stood at the window and watched him stride into the garage. The engine roared to life.

I climbed back into bed. The king-sized bed stretched out wide and empty, and I curled up in one small corner.

I reached over to his side. The sheets were cold.

I closed my eyes and thought back to the way things used to be.

Back then, the other Alphas all looked down on him.

I was the only one who stayed by his side, living those lean, hard days with him.

He was so attentive to me then.

If my blanket slipped off while I slept, he'd notice right away and pull me into his arms.

He cooked for me, did my laundry, and took me on rides out to the countryside on weekends.

"Joey, I know being with me hasn't been easy on you, so I'm going to treat you twice as well."

But now, all that care and tenderness belonged to someone else.

Even spending one whole night beside me had become too much to ask.

Dawn crept in. Sunlight filtered through the pink curtains and flooded the room with a harsh, glaring light.

I hated pink.

But Sophia loved it.

She'd come to visit and swapped out every piece of decor in our bedroom for things she liked.

Whenever I showed the slightest hint of reluctance, Theo would murmur, "Joey, be reasonable. She's young."

Those words echoed in my head, stirring a deep frustration inside me.

Sleep was gone. I got up, washed my face, and started packing.

This house was full of traces of our life together, yet barely anything in it had been chosen by me.

There were the childish plushies Sophia picked out, which Theo brainlessly assumed I must love too.

There were those sickeningly pink dresses I absolutely loathed.

"Sophia says pink is what real women wear. Stop dressing in black and white—you look like a widow."

I swept the entire pile of garbage off the hangers and shoved them into the darkest corner of the closet.

I didn't like any of it, and I didn't need any of it.

Theo saw it all from a short distance away.He was still on crutches. His leg hadn't fully healed.I looked at him calmly, and he looked back at me the same way.But unlike mine, his calm was laced with despair. After a bitter smile, he turned and limped away on his crutches. The next day, when I left my building, the ever-present gaze was gone.Theo had gone home.Anna called to tell me Theo had lost his mind. What I saw that day was probably the last time he'd been in his right mind."Joey, you have no idea what he's been doing!"Anna sounded exasperated. "He showed up at my door again and crouched there for hours, not saying a word, just crying.""And after he finally left, I heard Sophia went to see him, and he beat her up!"I almost laughed. "Why would he hit Sophia?""Because once she found out you were getting married, she figured she finally had her chance and went after Theo. But he blamed everything on her.""It was brutal. The healers almost gave up on her. She barely pulled

Weston walked me out of the restaurant. On the way back to the office, I studied his hand with concern."Are you hurt?"He shrugged casually. "Not at all. He's the one who's going to need some time to recover."I looked away, embarrassed. "Sorry for dragging you into that, Weston.""No. It was my pleasure."After that day, every time I left for work, I felt a pair of eyes watching me.When I checked the security footage, it was Theo.He hadn't left. He'd stayed in London. He was living at a hotel right across the street from my building.Every day, he'd watch me leave for work, silently follow me, and watch me walk into the office. Then wait downstairs until I got off.On weekends, he'd leave breakfast at my door. Freshly baked bread, pastries for afternoon tea, ice cream. All my favorite flavors. He never approached me. He just kept watching. After a dinner with coworkers one evening, I'd had a few drinks and was trying to hail a cab on the street. That was when Theo appeared. He look

I looked at the shimmering moonstone ring.Once, I believed that if he put the Moon Goddess's moonstone ring on my finger, it would mean I was the one he'd chosen, the mate he'd never let go.But the moment I realized he'd give that ring to just anyone, I was done."Theo."My voice was barely above a whisper. "Sophia already wore that ring."The hope froze on Theo's face."Someone else wore it. It disgusts me.""No!"Theo's face flushed crimson. His voice shook, and the ring nearly slipped from his fingers."Joey, nothing ever happened! She's just a sister to me!""She's immature, and I've already scolded her for it!""While you've been gone, I've barely contacted her or seen her. When we go back, I promise she won't come anywhere near you!""I completely redid the entire house. Everything is exactly the way you want it. I threw out every single piece of her stuff!""Joey, you have to believe me! I swear I'm telling the truth! Just come back home with me!"His words rushed out in a des

Over the next few months, I threw myself into work and cut all ties with everything back home.My mentor was partnering with one of London's most prominent firms, and my role was Director of Marketing.I settled into the company's fast pace quickly, and every day felt full and purposeful. After work, I'd sit in a cafe with a sandwich and a glass of milk, watching people stroll by. It was bliss.London at night was beautiful, so different from what I was used to. The old architecture gave the city a richness that lifted my spirits.I sipped my milk in silence, listening to music, and never once thought about the man who only ever asked me to back down and be reasonable.Three months later, after landing another major client, I was promoted to Vice President. The CEO, Weston, was also a werewolf, from the ancient Greywolf Pack.He brought me to his office and smiled."Joey, you're going to be the next powerhouse around here. I opened the app. It was a photo.Sophia was beaming, cradling a cat plushie. In the next photo, a tall figure stood with his back to the camera, wearing a tailored suit and a Cartier belt. His long, elegant hands were opening a gift box for her.The caption read: "My little kitty broke, but he was sweet enough to buy me the newest limited edition. He waited in line for two hours!"Below it, Theo had commented: "As long as you like it."On the other end of the line, Anna was livid. "Joey! You're just going to sit there and watch Theo fuss over another woman without saying a word?""It's your birthday today. What did he get you?""Nothing," I said."Oh my God! Don't tell me you're not even angry!"I laughed. "Not angry. Because I'm done with him. I'm going to London, sweetheart."There was a long silence on the other end. Finally, Anna let out a sigh."Joey, you're so brave. You're doing the right thing. It's time to find your own life."I smiled and hung up.Then I turned off my phone,

Theo came back around noon.He saw the boxes I'd packed up and frowned. "Why is all this packed?"I didn't look up. "Throwing out trash."When Theo realized the boxes were filled with the things he'd bought me, his voice shot up."Joey, there's a limit to your damn tantrums!"He violently kicked the closest box, pacing the room like a caged animal."This is still about the ring, isn't it? When are you going to let it go?""I bought you all of this. Now you think it's taking up space? What, are you going to move out too?"I stood up and looked at him calmly."Yes."Theo froze for a second, then pressed a hand to his forehead, caught between frustration and disbelief."Are you joking, Joey?"He pulled off his suit jacket and dropped onto the bed, his tone cold and dismissive."Where would you even go? You don't even have a job. How would you support yourself?""Joey, I thought you were a mature woman, but you're getting more and more childish. Are you packing your bags to run away from h
