Chapter 2

Author: Noorie
His words hung in the air, sharp as broken glass, but I didn't flinch. Lorenzo held Rosaline against him, his jaw set in that familiar, protective stance he always assumed whenever she was near.

Rosaline peered from behind his broad shoulder, her dark eyes wide with manufactured terror. It was an old performance, and I used to fall right into her trap.

I remembered three years ago, when the quiet humiliation had driven me to my limit. I had confronted Rosaline in the gardens, demanding to know why she kept ending up on the island with my fiancé. When she smiled—a tiny, cruel little curl of her lips—I had lost control and slapped her.

The fallout had been swift and brutal. Rosaline had collapsed, pale and trembling, claiming the shock had sent her delicate health into a spiral.

Lorenzo hadn't even yelled at me. He had simply looked at me with cold disgust and banned me from the estate for two months, forcing me to publicly apologize to her.

I was the one who spent nights crying in an empty room, humiliated, while Lorenzo spent those weeks nursing Rosaline back to health. I was the one who suffered, while she played the delicate victim and gained even more of his devotion.

I wouldn't play that game tonight.

"I don't plan on taking anything out on her, Lorenzo," I said, my voice steady and unsettlingly calm. I looked him dead in the eye. "I'm only here to take my spin."

Low giggles rippled through the crowd of onlookers.

"She still thinks she has a chance?" a woman whispered loudly.

"Seven years of 'Better Luck Next Year' isn't enough of a clue for her?" another sneered.

“Perhaps she is not destined to be our Donna!” Another one mocked with a meaningful glance at Rosaline.

I turned away from the crowd and stepped toward the center of the hall, where the massive, gilded wheel stood under the chandelier. "Mock all you want," I said softly, loud enough for the quieted room to hear. "This time, I will spin a name."

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed. The timid, desperate Lucy who begged for his affection was nowhere to be found. My absolute confidence seemed to unnerve him, breaking through his usual icy composure.

"Wait," Lorenzo commanded, his grip tightening on Rosaline’s waist as he stepped forward. "The order of the ceremony will change tonight. Rosaline will spin first."

Murmurs broke out among the guests.

"Why should she go first?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Rosaline’s health is frail, as you well know," Lorenzo stated smoothly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "She was forced to endure a long drive here, and standing for extended periods exhausts her. As the host, I am ensuring my guest's comfort. Besides, custom dictates that guests of honor take precedence."

Guest of honor, on the island built for me.

"Go ahead," I said, stepping back with a tight, hollow smile. "Let her spin."

Rosaline offered Lorenzo a timid, grateful look before gliding gracefully toward the stage. She placed her small, manicured hand on the golden peg of the wheel. With a delicate flick of her wrist, she set the heavy wheel into motion.

The clicking sound echoed through the silent room—tick, tick, tick, tick.

Lorenzo watched the mechanism with a subtle, triumphant smirk. I stood perfectly still, watching the calculated fraud unfold right in front of the entire elite class.

The wheel slowed down, clicking past slot after slot, until the heavy pointer dropped into the final notch with a decisive thud.

The host read the golden letters aloud: Lorenzo Moretti.

Rosaline gasped in faint surprise, placing a hand over her heart, while Lorenzo stepped up to wrap his arm around her once more, looking at me to catch the devastation in my eyes. But he found nothing.

Rosaline turned to me. Her face of a pitiful, frail girl, was gone, completely replaced by a smugly proud woman as she wrapped her hands around Lorenzo’s shoulder, saying softly, “Lucy, your man is mine for tonight!”

“Don't worry, I’ll return him tomorrow with some little changes.” She winked.

I remembered those days when Lorenzo returned from Lucy's Island. He would give me a bouquet of flowers and a soft kiss on my cheeks before whispering into my ear, “Rosaline is just a good friend of mine, Lucy. Give rest to your wild thoughts and stop overthinking.”

“She is the woman you should worry about the least.” He would say, but the lip marks on his white shirt and open packets of condoms in his coat’s pocket would give him away.

Back then, I used to convince myself saying it's just one night out of those three hundred sixty-five nights when he shared his bed with me. Perhaps I really shouldn't worry since he always says, ‘One night of love can't erase the passion I have for you, Lucy. You are my fiancé. That will never change.’

But this time, it was different. I walked past them and stood right in front of the spinning wheel as I said, a soft smile touching my lips, “It's my turn now!”

One year later “Two hundred dollars!” Rosaline said excitedly, counting the money she had robbed by falsely accusing a youngster of molestation in the dark alley. Beside her, Lorenzo smirked reading a cut out from the newspaper lying on the trash can.He was unrecognizable. The tailored Brioni suits were gone, replaced by a threadbare coat he’d bought off a street vendor in Naples. The sharp, imperious jawline that had once commanded boardrooms and terrified lieutenants was now buried beneath a ragged, salt-and-pepper beard. His hands, perpetually tremulous, fumbled with a damp cigarette."He's taking the vessel out today," Lorenzo muttered, his voice a dry rasp. "The Valeria. My ship. He renamed it the Lucia.""Shut up, Lorenzo," Rosaline hissed, not turning her head. "You’ve said that every morning for a week.""It was mine," he insisted. "Everything was mine.""And now you're a ghost living on my money and stolen cash," she snapped, her voice breaking with bitter exhaustion. "You

The silence in the foyer hung heavy, stretched taut like a piano wire ready to snap.Down below, Lorenzo stood with the open velvet box held high, his bloodshot eyes fixed on me with a desperate, suffocating intensity. He looked like a man drowning, offering me a gold anchor to save us both. Beside him, Ethan remained motionless, a shadow carved from ice, offering nothing but the quiet, terrifying freedom to choose.I looked at Lorenzo. For seven years, I had survived under his thumb, enduring his cold neglect, his casual cruelties, and the constant reminder that I was nothing more than an accessory to his bloodline. He didn't love me. He loved the idea that I belonged to him, and the thought that his brother had touched what was his had driven him past the brink of sanity. Then my gaze shifted to Ethan.Ethan, who had unspooled me in the dark. Ethan, who had challenged me, provoked me, and given me the one thing Lorenzo never had: a choice.I took a slow, deliberate breath, letting go

The next morning, as the harsh sunlight swept through the window and fell on my eyes, I found the bed beside me was empty. The heavy silk sheets still held the faint heat of Ethan’s body and the scent of cedarwood. From behind the frosted glass door of the adjacent bathroom came the steady, rhythmic hiss of a hot shower.I sat up, wincing slightly as my body reminded me of the frantic, possessive hours that had passed between midnight and dawn. Ethan hadn't lied. The quiet restraint he’d displayed down in the living room had burned away the second his lips hit mine, replaced by a deep, breathless intensity that had left me completely unspooled.I looked down at my hands, no longer trembling.“Get pregnant and have someone whom you can call your own after I’m gone.”My grandmother’s final wish echoed sharply in my mind.‘F*ck this monster!’ I thought, ‘He really went for seven rounds!’ Considering my ovulation, I must have gotten pregnant. I had done it. ‘Grandma wishes me to bui

The rotors of the helicopter beat a steady, hypnotic rhythm against the night sky, drowning out the lingering echoes of Lorenzo’s frantic, echoing screams. I leaned my head back against the leather seat. My hands, resting in my lap, trembled slightly. Seven years of quiet compliance, of standing in shadows and swallowing humiliation, had ended in a single, irreversible moment."Cold?"Ethan’s deep, quiet voice broke through the noise of the engine. I opened my eyes to find him watching me, his gray eyes devoid of the harsh dominance he had displayed in the hall. He reached across the small aisle and draped his heavy wool coat over my shoulders. The garment smelled faintly of cedarwood and sea air, wrapping me in a solid, grounding warmth."No," I said softly, meeting his gaze. "Just... realizing it's over.""It’s not over," Ethan corrected, a subtle, sharp edge in his tone. "It’s just a new beginning."Miles away, on the private tarmac behind the mansion, a second helicopter sat wit

Ethan’s footsteps echoed against the marble floor, deliberate and heavy, as he walked straight past the frozen crowd. The oppressive silence in the hall stretched so thin it felt ready to snap. Lorenzo’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage. He shoved Rosaline aside—nearly causing her to stumble—and stepped into Ethan’s path, his chest heaving.“You’re out of your mind, Ethan,” Lorenzo spat, his hands balling into tight fists. “Lucy is my fiancée. The wheel’s outcome is void. She isn't going anywhere with you, let alone to that island.”Ethan didn't even slow down. He stopped just inches from Lorenzo, towering over his younger brother with an air of absolute, suffocating dominance. His gray eyes were cold, amused, and utterly devoid of fear.“Void?” Ethan asked softly, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest. “Since when does the ruler of the empire break the sacred law set by himself? You insisted on the rule yourself, Lorenzo. ‘A Moretti never breaks his word.’ Isn't that the motto

The moment those words escaped through my lips, the hall erupted with another gasp of laughter. Those Moretti estate women stopped at nothing to mock me. “What's the point of spinning the wheel? Mr. Moretti’s name has already landed on Rosaline’s spin, as always.” “At this point, you should already give up and let Mr Moretti marry Rosaline instead.” “Another bad omen waiting for you…” “What a loss of time!” “Silence!” Lorenzo commanded, taking a step closer to me. His voice softened as he shot a deep glance over my quiet expression and turned to face the crowd. “The rules state only a night; it never says I should get married to the woman who spins my name.” “Besides, Rosaline and I are only friends. I never intend to marry her.” He held my hands gently. “Next year, I’ll definitely marry you, Lucy.” Too bad.I don't have that much time. I pulled my hands from his grasp and faced the crowd. My voice was laced with confidence as I spoke, “Who says I’m going for Lorenzo’s name?”
