Chapter 1

The metallic magnet felt icy against my palm as I backed out of the hall, slipping into the cold night air without making a sound.

Seven years of longing, of feeling like a tragic heroine waiting for a promised paradise, vanished in an instant, replaced by a clarity so sharp it burned.

I didn't head back to Lorenzo’s penthouse. Instead, I drove straight to the outskirts of the city, pulling up to the quiet medical center where my grandmother lived.

"Lucy," Dr. Vance said, meeting me in the dim hallway outside her room, his face etched with exhaustion. "I’m glad you came. We’re running out of time."

I swallowed the lump in my throat. "How long?"

"A year. At most," he sighed, gesturing to the untouched tray of pills on the desk. "Her heart is failing, but she’s refusing her medication. She says there’s no point in prolonging her life if she’s just waiting around in a hospital bed."

I pushed open the door to her room. Grandma looked tiny sitting by the window, but her eyes snapped to mine with their usual stubborn brightness.

"Stop looking at me like I’m made of glass, child," she grumbled, though her expression softened as I knelt beside her chair and laid my head on her lap.

"Grandma, please take the medicine," I whispered, gripping her frail hand. "For me."

"I’ve lived my life, Lucy," she said softly, stroking my hair. "My only regret is leaving you alone in this world. My only wish is to see you married to a man who truly cherishes you—to hold your child in my arms before I close my eyes for good. But year after year, you wait for a wedding that never comes."

Last year, when I returned home without landing my spin on a name, she had rushed to the Moretti House demanding answers. She couldn't believe her granddaughter’s luck was that bad to be failing for seven years.

Lorenzo’s mother, Miss Emily, couldn't tolerate the accusations and had a servant kick her out, causing her heart severe damage.

That night, Lorenzo came to me and said his judgment would never be clouded by the blood ties and that he would seek justice for my grandma, and the other day words spread about how much Lorenzo lloved his fiancée. He didn't even spare his mother and punished her for causing a small injury to his fiancée’s grandmother.

The punishment— cutting half of her monthly allowance for a month.

And when I argued, he simply replied, “Your grandma was at fault, Lucy. She put allegations on me for messing up with the spinning wheel. How do you expect me to react?”

I became silent.

It was only tonight that I saw the cold, freaking truth. My grandma was never wrong.

He played me for seven whole years.

A tear slipped down my cheek, but I wiped it away, looking directly into her eyes with a resolve I hadn't felt in seven years.

"You will hold your grandchild, Grandma," I promised, my voice steady. "I’m spinning the wheel tomorrow. And I will land on a name, get married, and give you a family. I promise you."

She searched my face, seeing the shift in me, and finally nodded, reaching for the small paper cup of pills on her bedside table.

The next evening, the grand hall of the Moretti Empire was bathed in gold and crystal. Whispers erupted the moment I walked through the heavy double doors.

"Look, it's Lucy."

"Seven years and she’s still coming to spin?"

"The island is named after her, yet she's the only one who's never been allowed to go. It's almost embarrassing."

I held my head high, ignoring the cruel snickers. I was no longer wearing the timid, expectant smile of a girl waiting to be chosen.

A sudden hush fell over the room as the heavy oak doors swung open once more. Lorenzo stepped inside, dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, carrying himself with the effortless authority of a king. But his hands weren't at his sides.

His arm was wrapped securely around the waist of a woman in a delicate silk dress—Rosaline.

She leaned into his chest, looking frail, elegant, and entirely triumphant, while Lorenzo guided her into the room as if she were the true queen of the evening.

The moment her gaze landed on me, she squeezed Lorenzo’s hands and gasped in hesitation. She hid herself behind his torso as if afraid I would eat her the next second.

Watching this, Lorenzo's face twisted. He shielded her against me before whispering in a cold voice, “Stay away! Your bad luck has nothing to do with Rosaline, Lucy. Don't take it out on her.”

One year later “Two hundred dollars!” Rosaline said excitedly, counting the money she had robbed by falsely accusing a youngster of molestation in the dark alley. Beside her, Lorenzo smirked reading a cut out from the newspaper lying on the trash can.He was unrecognizable. The tailored Brioni suits were gone, replaced by a threadbare coat he’d bought off a street vendor in Naples. The sharp, imperious jawline that had once commanded boardrooms and terrified lieutenants was now buried beneath a ragged, salt-and-pepper beard. His hands, perpetually tremulous, fumbled with a damp cigarette."He's taking the vessel out today," Lorenzo muttered, his voice a dry rasp. "The Valeria. My ship. He renamed it the Lucia.""Shut up, Lorenzo," Rosaline hissed, not turning her head. "You’ve said that every morning for a week.""It was mine," he insisted. "Everything was mine.""And now you're a ghost living on my money and stolen cash," she snapped, her voice breaking with bitter exhaustion. "You

The silence in the foyer hung heavy, stretched taut like a piano wire ready to snap.Down below, Lorenzo stood with the open velvet box held high, his bloodshot eyes fixed on me with a desperate, suffocating intensity. He looked like a man drowning, offering me a gold anchor to save us both. Beside him, Ethan remained motionless, a shadow carved from ice, offering nothing but the quiet, terrifying freedom to choose.I looked at Lorenzo. For seven years, I had survived under his thumb, enduring his cold neglect, his casual cruelties, and the constant reminder that I was nothing more than an accessory to his bloodline. He didn't love me. He loved the idea that I belonged to him, and the thought that his brother had touched what was his had driven him past the brink of sanity. Then my gaze shifted to Ethan.Ethan, who had unspooled me in the dark. Ethan, who had challenged me, provoked me, and given me the one thing Lorenzo never had: a choice.I took a slow, deliberate breath, letting go

The next morning, as the harsh sunlight swept through the window and fell on my eyes, I found the bed beside me was empty. The heavy silk sheets still held the faint heat of Ethan’s body and the scent of cedarwood. From behind the frosted glass door of the adjacent bathroom came the steady, rhythmic hiss of a hot shower.I sat up, wincing slightly as my body reminded me of the frantic, possessive hours that had passed between midnight and dawn. Ethan hadn't lied. The quiet restraint he’d displayed down in the living room had burned away the second his lips hit mine, replaced by a deep, breathless intensity that had left me completely unspooled.I looked down at my hands, no longer trembling.“Get pregnant and have someone whom you can call your own after I’m gone.”My grandmother’s final wish echoed sharply in my mind.‘F*ck this monster!’ I thought, ‘He really went for seven rounds!’ Considering my ovulation, I must have gotten pregnant. I had done it. ‘Grandma wishes me to bui

The rotors of the helicopter beat a steady, hypnotic rhythm against the night sky, drowning out the lingering echoes of Lorenzo’s frantic, echoing screams. I leaned my head back against the leather seat. My hands, resting in my lap, trembled slightly. Seven years of quiet compliance, of standing in shadows and swallowing humiliation, had ended in a single, irreversible moment."Cold?"Ethan’s deep, quiet voice broke through the noise of the engine. I opened my eyes to find him watching me, his gray eyes devoid of the harsh dominance he had displayed in the hall. He reached across the small aisle and draped his heavy wool coat over my shoulders. The garment smelled faintly of cedarwood and sea air, wrapping me in a solid, grounding warmth."No," I said softly, meeting his gaze. "Just... realizing it's over.""It’s not over," Ethan corrected, a subtle, sharp edge in his tone. "It’s just a new beginning."Miles away, on the private tarmac behind the mansion, a second helicopter sat wit

Ethan’s footsteps echoed against the marble floor, deliberate and heavy, as he walked straight past the frozen crowd. The oppressive silence in the hall stretched so thin it felt ready to snap. Lorenzo’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage. He shoved Rosaline aside—nearly causing her to stumble—and stepped into Ethan’s path, his chest heaving.“You’re out of your mind, Ethan,” Lorenzo spat, his hands balling into tight fists. “Lucy is my fiancée. The wheel’s outcome is void. She isn't going anywhere with you, let alone to that island.”Ethan didn't even slow down. He stopped just inches from Lorenzo, towering over his younger brother with an air of absolute, suffocating dominance. His gray eyes were cold, amused, and utterly devoid of fear.“Void?” Ethan asked softly, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest. “Since when does the ruler of the empire break the sacred law set by himself? You insisted on the rule yourself, Lorenzo. ‘A Moretti never breaks his word.’ Isn't that the motto

The moment those words escaped through my lips, the hall erupted with another gasp of laughter. Those Moretti estate women stopped at nothing to mock me. “What's the point of spinning the wheel? Mr. Moretti’s name has already landed on Rosaline’s spin, as always.” “At this point, you should already give up and let Mr Moretti marry Rosaline instead.” “Another bad omen waiting for you…” “What a loss of time!” “Silence!” Lorenzo commanded, taking a step closer to me. His voice softened as he shot a deep glance over my quiet expression and turned to face the crowd. “The rules state only a night; it never says I should get married to the woman who spins my name.” “Besides, Rosaline and I are only friends. I never intend to marry her.” He held my hands gently. “Next year, I’ll definitely marry you, Lucy.” Too bad.I don't have that much time. I pulled my hands from his grasp and faced the crowd. My voice was laced with confidence as I spoke, “Who says I’m going for Lorenzo’s name?”
