Kael's POV

Vivian called me into her office again, and this time there was no pretense of good news in her voice.

"She filed," she said, sliding a thick stack of papers across the desk the moment I sat down. "Formal response. Full appearance. And she's not just contesting the petition, Kael. She's countering it. Requesting full custody herself."

I picked up the stack, already feeling something tighten in my chest before I'd read a single word.

"There's more," Vivian said, watching me carefully.

  • He Lost His Wife Before He Knew She Was Pregnant    Chapter 21 - Coming Home

Virelle's POVSix weeks. That was how long it took for the doctors to finally say the words I'd been praying to hear since the night Lucien arrived two months early."He's ready to go home."I cried right there in the NICU, right in front of the nurse who said it, my hands shaking as I signed discharge paperwork for a son who'd spent his entire short life so far hooked up to machines instead of sleeping in a crib like he was supposed to.Priya was the one who dressed him for the trip home, gentle and sure in a way that told me exactly why she'd become more than just a nurse to me over those six weeks. She'd sat with me through the worst nights, the alarms, the dips in his numbers that left me shaking in the hallway, and somewhere in all of that, she'd stopped being hospital staff and started being family."Look at him," she said, tucking a blanket around him, small and warm and finally, finally stable. "He's a fighter, this one. Just like his mama.""I don't feel much like a fighter r

  • He Lost His Wife Before He Knew She Was Pregnant    Chapter 20 - Franklin's Move

Franklin's POVI called Vivian Cross myself, rather than send an assistant, because some conversations required a voice that couldn't be ignored or delegated."Mr. Hartwell," she said when she picked up, careful in the way people got careful around me once they understood exactly how much of their firm's revenue depended on my family's business. "I assume you're calling about Kael's instructions.""I am.""He was clear, sir. He wants the aggressive strategy paused. Immediately.""My son," I said, settling into the chair behind my desk, "is a grown man having an attack of conscience at the worst possible moment. I understand it. I even respect it, in a sentimental sort of way. But sentiment doesn't win custody cases, Vivian, and it certainly doesn't protect a company's succession interests.""With respect, he's my client.""He's your client," I agreed. "And Hartwell Group is your firm's single largest account. I'd hate for anyone to lose sight of how those two facts relate to each othe

"She's entered a detailed account into the record. Context for why she left. Why she hid. It names you specifically. Repeatedly."I started reading. The language was clinical, legal, stripped of the kind of emotion I half expected, and somehow that made it worse. It didn't read like a woman screaming at me across a street. It read like a careful, devastating inventory, dates, patterns, documented absences, missed anniversaries, forgotten conversations, a marriage laid out like evidence in a cas

Lawyers, Not Love Virelle’s POVI was in the chair outside the NICU window when the man in the gray suit found me. I didn’t see him as a threat at first. Hospitals were full of men in suits, doctors’ husbands, insurance reps, chaplains who dressed too formally for a place that smelled like antiseptic and fear. He walked with a clipboard and an envelope, and he checked a name off a list before he even looked at my face.“Virelle Hartwell?”My whole body went still.“I’m Daniel Ruiz,” he said, not unkindly, just efficient, a man doing a job he’d done a hundred times before. “I’m a process server. I need to hand you this in person and confirm you’ve received it.”“I’m not…” I started, the old instinct rising fast, the lie ready on my tongue.“Ma’am, the hospital’s already confirmed your identity through the admission paperwork. I just need you to take this.”He held out the envelope. My hands were shaking so badly it took me two tries to grab it.“You’ve been served,” he said. “Have a g

The Leak Kael’s POVVivian called at nine in the evening, which should have told me right away this wasn’t a routine update.“I need you to come to the office,” she said. “Tonight. This can’t wait until morning.”“Just tell me over the phone.”“Kael. Come to the office.”Something in her voice made my stomach drop before I even had a reason to know why. I was in a car within ten minutes. Her office lights were still on when I arrived, the building mostly dark around it, and she was waiting behind her desk with a folder open in front of her, a paralegal I didn’t recognize sitting stiffly in the corner chair like she’d rather be anywhere else.“What is it,” I said, not bothering to sit.Vivian slid the folder toward me. “My team runs routine cross-checks against hospital billing databases across the tri-state area as part of discovery. It’s standard practice in cases like this. Tonight, we got a flag.”I looked down at the paper. A name. An admission date. A hospital in Queens.Virelle

  • He Lost His Wife Before He Knew She Was Pregnant    Chapter 16

The Smallest Fight Virelle’s POVThey wheeled me down a hallway I didn’t remember agreeing to go down, my heart slamming so hard against my ribs I thought it might crack them.“Is he okay?” I kept asking, grabbing at sleeves, at rails, at anything solid. “Please, just tell me if he’s okay.”“He’s stable right now,” the nurse said, not slowing down. “His oxygen dropped for a moment during the transfer to the NICU. The team’s got him. I just need you close by.”Close by turned out to be a chair pressed against a wall of glass, looking into a room full of machines and wires and the smallest human being I had ever seen in my life, lying under a warming light with tubes taped gently across his tiny face. I put my hand flat against the glass.“Lucien,” I whispered, the name slipping out of me before I’d even decided to say it out loud, no ceremony, no perfect moment, just me standing in a hospital hallway crying so hard I could barely see him clearly. “That’s your name. Lucien. I’m not wai
