Chapter 2

Author: Nifty Nine
Margo hung up and went straight to the hospital.

The cut on her forehead needed three stitches. The doctor told her to keep it dry.

She barely reacted.

On her way out, she spotted Huxton's Maybach parked nearby.

The window was cracked open. Inside, Jayla leaned against his shoulder, tears running down her face.

"Huxton, I know I hurt you back then..." Her voice broke. "I don't expect you to forgive me. But I had my reasons. My parents didn't approve of us, so they forced me to go abroad. They even took my phone. I wanted to contact you. I just couldn't..."

Huxton said nothing, his jaw tight.

Margo froze nearby.

Finally, Huxton spoke, his voice low.

"Then why'd you come back now?"

Jayla looked up, tears streaking her cheeks.

"Because I can't forget you... I know you have Margo now. I'm not asking for anything. Just don't make me leave. Let me stay, even if it's from a distance..."

From the shadows, Margo watched Huxton stay quiet for a long moment.

Then he reached out and wiped Jayla's tears.

"I don't blame you. And Margo..." He paused. "She's like a sister to me. It's not what you think."

Jayla's face lit up. "Really?"

Huxton nodded.

Jayla broke down again and threw herself into his arms.

Margo smiled bitterly, turned around, and headed straight to the immigration office.

***

At the immigration office, an employee handed Margo a form.

"Your visa should be ready in two weeks."

Margo thanked her. By the time she stepped outside, it was dark.

She went back to Huxton's villa.

She'd lived there for three years while taking care of him.

She'd even been dumb enough to call it home.

The print she'd picked still hung by the front door. Her succulents sat in the living room. Her handwritten list of "easy-on-the-stomach recipes" was still taped to the kitchen wall.

Now she'd erase every trace herself.

While packing, she found a photo at the bottom of a drawer.

It was from the day Huxton finished rehab. He'd actually smiled for the camera, while Margo stood beside him, beaming.

The edges had yellowed from how many times she'd held it.

Margo stared at the photo for a long moment.

Then she dropped it in the trash.

'About time I woke up from this stupid dream.'

***

Early the next morning, Huxton called.

"I forgot my stomach meds. Bring them to the office."

His voice was rough with sleep, his tone way too casual after last night.

Margo went quiet for two seconds.

"Okay."

When she got to the office, the elevator opened and Jayla stepped out carrying a fancy lunch box.

"What a coincidence." Jayla smiled. "I brought Huxton lunch. Wanna come?"

Margo said nothing and followed her in.

Huxton was going through some files. He looked up when they walked in together.

"How'd you two end up together?"

"We bumped into each other." Jayla opened the container, and the smell of spices filled the room. "I made your favorite spicy beef stew!"

Margo's expression tightened.

"His stomach can't handle spicy food."

Huxton glanced at her and grabbed his fork.

"Once won't kill me."

He took a bite of beef drenched in sauce without even flinching.

Margo's grip tightened around the stomach meds in her bag, her knuckles turning white.

It didn't take long for sweat to bead across Huxton's forehead. His fingers shook around his pen.

"Huxton, are you okay?" Jayla asked.

"I'm fine." He forced a smile. "I've got work to do. You two should head home."

Margo stared at him for a second, then quietly set the meds on his desk and left.

Downstairs, she couldn't hold back.

"His stomach issues are serious. Please be careful what you bring him to eat."

Jayla suddenly laughed. "You seriously still don't know your place, do you?

"To Huxton, you're basically just his caregiver. Of course you have to remember all that stuff. Me? He loves me. I don't have to."

She stepped closer, a smug smile on her lips. "I could hand him poison, and he'd still take it. Get it?"

Margo's fingers shook, her heart twisting.

'She's right.'

It had taken Margo three years just to matter to Huxton.

Jayla didn't have to do a thing.

He'd swallow poison for her anyway.

"Margo, happy birthday."Huxton's voice snapped her out of her thoughts. She forced a small smile and lowered her gaze, hiding everything she felt."Thanks."A slice of cake appeared in front of her. Margo looked up to find Huxton smiling warmly."You don't have to thank me. This was kinda last-minute. Next year, I'll throw you a real birthday party. Something huge. How's that sound?"Margo didn't answer. She took a bite of cake. The rich frosting was smooth and perfectly sweet. But to her, it tasted like nothing. Her fingers tightened around the bracelet, the amethysts clicking softly together. She didn't want any of this. She just wanted out.She wanted Chad.'If only Chad were here.'God, she missed him.'Has he figured out where I am yet? Two days later, it was Margo's birthday.Huxton cleared his entire schedule for her.But the second he started planning the cake, he realized something pretty pathetic. He had no clue what kind she liked. So he bought every flavor he could find.Thinking about it, he realized this was the first time he'd ever actually celebrated her birthday. Before the accident, Huxton had been the golden boy. Why would someone like him care about the birthday of some broke student his family sponsored? Then he became paralyzed. When Margo came to take care of him, he was angry at the world and humiliated that she'd seen him at his lowest. So he took it all out on her.Eventually, Margo's care and encouragement helped him get better. He slowly dropped his guard and started treating people better.Just not her.He still hated that she'd seen him at his absolute worst. Margo seriously didn't get it.'Why is he doing this? He can't keep me here forever. I'm gonna leave eventually, so what's the point of any of this?' she wondered.Huxton didn't care how long it took.He was terrified she'd disappear from his life again. So this time, he wasn't wasting a single chance to be with her.By the third sunset Margo had counted, Huxton finally came back. With dozens of potted moth orchids. Two days earlier, Huxton had asked if she wanted anything the next time he went out. She'd asked for orchids.Auremont wasn't exactly orchid-friendly, but with the right care, they could still thrive. And since Margo had nothing but time, taking care of them gave her something to do.She transplanted each one into the greenhouse herself, carefully tending to them.Seeing how much she liked them, Huxton finally relaxed."Thanks."When she finished, Margo turned and smiled at Huxton, who'd been waiting by the greenhouse door.He waved it off, barely hiding his g

Just like when Margo had loved Huxton. The second she heard his accident had left him paralyzed and depressed, she'd gone straight to him. No matter how moody he got or how hard he lashed out, she never once thought about leaving.Chad had been the same with her. She'd rejected him and pushed him away over and over, but he never gave up. Eventually, his sincerity won her over. But Huxton? She'd never felt that kind of love from him.Even near the end of his recovery, when he'd started treating her better, he'd only become less hostile.Margo lowered her gaze, keeping her emotions hidden."What about Ms. Benson?"Her voice stayed calm. Her attitude didn't discourage Huxton. If anything, his eyes lit up at the question."Margo, don't worry. I don't love Jayla. I swear."After I found out she'd thrown herself down the stairs and poisoned herself just to frame you, I made sure she paid for it. The Bensons are done in Auremont."And I know I failed you. Meanwhile, Margo had no clue any of this was happening.Having the wedding in Carmoria had actually been the idea of Chad's dad, Michael. Michael had settled abroad, but Chad's grandparents still lived in Carmoria. Chad hadn't seen them in forever, and most of Margo and Chad's friends were there too.So Carmoria it was.Wedding planning was a total nightmare. With the big day coming up fast, Margo and Chad were constantly running around town, juggling a million things.Margo barely had time to breathe, let alone think about Huxton. She'd pretty much forgotten about him.Huxton, though? He definitely hadn't forgotten her.He even showed up looking for her. When Huxton cornered her outside the restroom again, Margo was already over it.The one time she went out without Chad, Huxton jumped at the chance.Apparently, while she was in Auremont, going anywhere alone was a bad idea."What do you want?" she finally asked.Huxton said nothing. He just stared at her like she was s
