Chapter 3

Autor: Ethereal
Damian picked up the documents and was about to flip back to the first page when his phone rang.

As a lawyer, he never signed a document without reading it first. That was one of the first rules he taught every new associate at his firm.

But the moment he saw the name on the screen, his attention shifted completely.

He answered.

Sofia's frightened voice came through immediately.

"Damian, someone followed me back to my building. Can you come get me? I'm scared."

His expression changed.

"Stay inside. I'm coming."

After he hung up, he clearly had no interest in the papers anymore. He grabbed a pen and signed exactly where I had marked, without asking why his authorization was needed.

"Anything else?"

"No."

He pushed the documents back to me, took his coat, and left.

I looked down at the final page.

Damian Caruso.

The signature was clean and confident, exactly like the one he placed on legal documents every day.

One of New York's most successful attorneys had just signed papers without reading them because Sofia had called.

He had no idea he had just signed a temporary parenting agreement and given written consent for me to relocate with Ethan out of state.

I closed the folder.

That evening, Damian finally came home.

I was packing Ethan's things when he stopped in the bedroom doorway.

"Sofia's going to stay here for a few days."

"Here?"

"Someone followed her back to her building today. She'll be safer here."

Then he added, "You and Ethan can stay at one of the other apartments for a few days."

I looked at him.

"So Sofia moves in, and we move out?"

"It's temporary."

"Why do we have to leave?"

"Our marriage isn't public. I don't want Sofia noticing anything or asking questions."

I almost laughed.

After eight years as his wife, I was being asked to leave my own home so another woman wouldn't find out I existed.

Damian could defend complete strangers in court. He could argue that they deserved their homes, their children, and their dignity after a marriage ended.

But in his own home, his wife and son were always the easiest people to remove.

"Fine."

Damian seemed surprised by how easily I agreed.

"I'll bring you both back in a few days. I know this is inconvenient. I'll make it up to you."

Once, I would have asked how much longer we were expected to hide.

Once, I would have reminded him that Ethan was getting older and already understood far more than Damian realized.

Now there was no point.

"Okay."

I kept packing. I had already planned to leave New York. Moving out a few days early changed nothing.

An hour later, Ethan and I were heading downstairs when the front door opened.

Sofia came in pulling two suitcases.

Damian immediately crossed the room and took one.

"I told you I'd send a driver. Why did you carry all this yourself?"

"I didn't want to wait."

Then she noticed us.

"Elena? What are you doing at Damian's house?"

Before I could answer, Damian spoke.

"She and her son needed somewhere to stay. I let them use the house for a while."

His wife of eight years and his own child had just become temporary guests.

Not his wife.

Not his son.

Just a woman and her child whom he had temporarily allowed into his home.

Sofia nodded.

"Oh. I see."

I tightened my hand around Ethan's.

"We were just leaving."

Ethan kept his head down until we passed Damian. Then he stopped and looked up.

"Thank you for letting us stay here, Mr. Caruso."

Damian went completely still.

For seven years, Ethan had called him Dad whenever they were alone. Even after every missed birthday, every empty seat, and every broken promise, he had continued to believe that Damian was still his father.

But this time, he called him exactly what Damian had taught him to say in front of other people.

Mr. Caruso.

Ethan took my hand and started toward the door, but Damian turned sharply.

"Wait."

For the first time, his voice sounded unsteady.

"What did Ethan just call me?"

"So after eight years, you still think I was a woman who would do anything to marry you."Damian's expression stiffened."Elena, that's not what I meant.""It's exactly what you meant."I looked at him and realized I wasn't even disappointed anymore.I was simply tired of being misunderstood."Damian, did it ever occur to you that eight years ago, I was the one trying to leave?"His brows drew together."What are you talking about?"For a moment, I was back at the Caruso & Associates anniversary gala.Damian had been drinking, but something about him had seemed wrong. He could barely walk, so I helped him back to his hotel room.I got him water, made sure he was in bed, and turned to leave.I had almost reached the door when he grabbed me.That was when I realized he wasn't simply drunk.I suspected someone had put something in his drink.I told him to let me go. I tried to get away, but Damian wasn't in a state to understand what I was saying. What happened afterward had never been so

Damian looked at Sofia standing in his way."I'm not lying to you."His voice was calm and final."I love Elena. I'm going to find her."He pulled his arm free and left the house without looking back.By then, Ethan and I had already settled into life in Seattle. My new job had not officially started yet, so my days were simple. I took Ethan to school in the morning, came home to unpack and organize the house, and occasionally handled a few independent legal consultations. The quiet still felt unfamiliar. No midnight calls from the firm. No contracts waiting on my laptop. No wondering whether Damian would come home or disappear again.Rachel told me from time to time that Damian kept asking where we were.I didn't care.He could look for me if he wanted.I wasn't going back.Eventually, my attorney confirmed that Ethan and I were living in Seattle after Damian requested visitation.A few weeks later, after dropping Ethan off at school, I was watering the flowers in the front yard when

When he finally returned home, he sat alone in the dark living room with the judgment in his hands. The house was completely silent.Dad.He suddenly remembered Ethan using that word when he was younger, and how often Damian had corrected him.Not outside. Not when other people were around.Call me Mr. Caruso. He had always claimed it was better if no one knew he had a wife and son. The truth was that he had never believed the marriage should have existed. Now Ethan had finally done exactly what Damian wanted. And hearing Mr. Caruso had felt unbearable. His eyes dropped to the papers again.I wasn't asking for any of his property or making any extra demands. I wanted only to end the marriage and keep Ethan primarily in my care under the temporary parenting agreement Damian had already signed. My signature was on the final page, dated before I left New York. His grip tightened around the papers. So I hadn't been throwing a tantrum.I hadn't been waiting in another apartment for him to c

After Sofia stormed out of Damian's office, the room stayed quiet.Plenty of people outside had seen what happened, but no one was foolish enough to gossip where Damian might hear.Rachel sent me a message.Everyone's betting on how long he can keep putting up with her.I replied with a smiling emoji and left it there. How capable Sofia was, or how much longer Damian could tolerate her, had nothing to do with me anymore.Damian had criticized me plenty of times too. The difference was that I never cried or walked out when he pointed out a mistake. I wrote everything down, fixed it, and made sure I didn't repeat it.I lost my parents young and got through college and law school on scholarships, loans, and part-time work. When I joined Caruso & Associates, I had no family name or connections.Damian didn't make things easier.I stayed late night after night, reading contracts, case law, and transaction records until I understood every line. Whenever I got stuck, I went to the senior atto

Damian never appeared at our first divorce hearing.Sofia called him again that morning, and he stayed with her instead. The hearing was postponed.I wasn't surprised.Once my resignation and Ethan's relocation paperwork were complete, I officially left Caruso & Associates.I didn't go to see Damian, and I had no intention of saying goodbye. Instead, I had my private attorney send the divorce papers to his house.Damian had already signed the temporary parenting agreement and Ethan's relocation consent. All that remained was ending the marriage itself. If he signed the divorce papers too, the rest of the process could move forward without much trouble.I looked at the delivery confirmation on my phone, then closed the page.Goodbye, Damian. From now on, you could let anyone stand beside you in public without worrying that Ethan or I might reveal what we were to you.The night before our flight, I asked Ethan one last time."Sweetheart, Mom is going to separate from Dad and take you som

"Mr. Caruso, thank you for letting us stay here."Ethan said it again.I looked down at him, and something tightened in my chest. His eyes were already red, but he still held his chin up, refusing to cry.For eight years, Damian had never publicly acknowledged our marriage.I had handled contracts, lawsuits, and high-profile cases for Caruso & Associates, helping him build the firm's reputation piece by piece. Yet in front of everyone else, I was still only one of his lawyers. When Ethan was younger, he didn't understand. He would run toward Damian and call him Dad the moment he saw him.Every time, Damian stopped him."Not here, Ethan."Eventually, Ethan learned. Around other people, he simply stopped calling Damian anything at all.At home, though, he still called him Dad in a small, careful voice.Today, for the first time, he had chosen a name for the distance between them.Mr. Caruso. And Damian looked like he couldn't stand hearing it."Ethan."He stepped closer with a frown."Wh
