Chapter 2

Autor: Ethereal
The next afternoon, I took Ethan to his school's Family Science Challenge alone.

Before the event started, he kept glancing toward the auditorium doors. Even when his teacher called his name, the seat we had saved for Damian was still empty.

Ethan said nothing. He only lowered his head and walked onto the stage.

He had spent two weeks building a water-cycle model. When the results were announced, he won first place in his grade. His teacher congratulated him, his classmates gathered around, and Ethan ran back to me with the medal in his hand.

Then he looked toward the entrance again.

"Mom, is Dad not coming?"

I didn't know how to answer.

On the drive home, he stayed quiet before asking, "What about tonight? Is he coming to my birthday dinner?"

Since Ethan was born, Damian had missed almost every school event. Birthdays, parent days, holiday performances—whenever a father was supposed to be there, it was always just me.

But today was his seventh birthday.

I still couldn't bring myself to take away the last bit of hope he had left.

When we got home, I sent Damian several messages.

Ethan waited for you all afternoon.

You missed his school event. At least come home for dinner tonight.

A long time passed before he finally replied.

I'll be there tonight.

I read the message twice before showing Ethan.

"Dad said he's coming."

His whole face lit up.

"Really?"

"Really."

Because Damian had never properly celebrated a birthday with him, Ethan spent the afternoon preparing. He insisted we serve Damian's favorite steak and roasted vegetables, and even saved the biggest slice of chocolate cake for him.

He wasn't allowed to call Damian Dad in public, yet he remembered every one of his father's preferences.

Seven o'clock came.

Damian didn't.

Eight o'clock passed.

Still nothing.

Ethan sat by the window, then curled up on the sofa, lifting his head whenever a car passed outside.

I called Damian. No answer. My messages went unanswered too.

By ten-thirty, Ethan was fighting sleep. It was almost eleven when he finally got off the sofa.

"Mom, let's stop waiting."

"Do you want to wait a little longer?"

He shook his head.

"I don't want to anymore."

His voice was quiet, but the disappointment in his eyes was impossible to miss.

That night, it was just the two of us at the dining table. I relit the candles, sang happy birthday, and watched Ethan close his eyes to make a wish.

I didn't ask what he wished for.

After he blew out the candles, neither of us mentioned Damian again.

When Ethan was asleep, I picked up my phone.

Sofia had just posted an Instagram Story.

Best birthday surprise.

It was her birthday too.

The photo showed white roses, an open jewelry box, and a man kneeling in front of her as he slipped a ring onto her finger.

His face wasn't visible.

I recognized Damian immediately.

What held my attention was the emerald ring on Sofia's hand.

It was an old Caruso family heirloom.

Years ago, not long after Damian and I married, I had seen it in the safe and foolishly asked if I could wear it someday. I thought owning something that belonged to the Caruso family might make me feel more like his wife.

Damian had only said, "That isn't for you."

I never asked again.

Now it was on Sofia's hand.

Someone had commented:

Should we be expecting an announcement soon?

Sofia answered with a heart emoji.

That was when I understood.

Ethan and Sofia shared the same birthday.

Damian hadn't forgotten.

He knew his son had turned seven today.

He had simply decided which birthday mattered more.

I stared at the picture, then closed the app and removed Sofia from my contacts.

The familiar ache in my chest was still there, but it no longer felt sharp.

Maybe after enough disappointment, even pain became dull.

Damian had spent years helping his clients walk away from broken marriages. As one of New York's most successful divorce lawyers, he always knew when a relationship could no longer be saved.

He just hadn't realized that his own marriage had already reached that point.

The next morning, the sound of the front door woke me.

Damian was home.

When I came downstairs, he was standing beside the dining table, looking at the remains of Ethan's birthday cake.

He turned when he heard me.

"Something came up with a client last night. It was late by the time I finished, so I didn't come back."

His tone was casual, as if he had missed an ordinary dinner.

I had called again and again. If he had wanted to come, he could at least have told Ethan he wouldn't make it.

But there was no reason to ask anymore.

"I know."

I took a folder from the drawer.

Inside were a temporary parenting agreement and Damian's written consent allowing me to relocate with Ethan out of state.

The divorce agreement I had signed the night before remained hidden beneath them.

Damian would see it soon enough.

I turned to the final page and placed the documents in front of Damian.

Then I pointed to the signature line.

"Sign here."

"So after eight years, you still think I was a woman who would do anything to marry you."Damian's expression stiffened."Elena, that's not what I meant.""It's exactly what you meant."I looked at him and realized I wasn't even disappointed anymore.I was simply tired of being misunderstood."Damian, did it ever occur to you that eight years ago, I was the one trying to leave?"His brows drew together."What are you talking about?"For a moment, I was back at the Caruso & Associates anniversary gala.Damian had been drinking, but something about him had seemed wrong. He could barely walk, so I helped him back to his hotel room.I got him water, made sure he was in bed, and turned to leave.I had almost reached the door when he grabbed me.That was when I realized he wasn't simply drunk.I suspected someone had put something in his drink.I told him to let me go. Damian looked at Sofia standing in his way."I'm not lying to you."His voice was calm and final."I love Elena. I'm going to find her."He pulled his arm free and left the house without looking back.By then, Ethan and I had already settled into life in Seattle. My new job had not officially started yet, so my days were simple. I took Ethan to school in the morning, came home to unpack and organize the house, and occasionally handled a few independent legal consultations. The quiet still felt unfamiliar. No midnight calls from the firm. No contracts waiting on my laptop. No wondering whether Damian would come home or disappear again.Rachel told me from time to time that Damian kept asking where we were.I didn't care.He could look for me if he wanted.I wasn't going back.Eventually, my attorney confirmed that Ethan and I were living in Seattle after Damian requested visitation.A few weeks later, after dropping Ethan off at school, I was watering the flowers in the front yard when

When he finally returned home, he sat alone in the dark living room with the judgment in his hands. The house was completely silent.Dad.He suddenly remembered Ethan using that word when he was younger, and how often Damian had corrected him.Not outside. Not when other people were around.Call me Mr. Caruso. He had always claimed it was better if no one knew he had a wife and son. The truth was that he had never believed the marriage should have existed. Now Ethan had finally done exactly what Damian wanted. And hearing Mr. Caruso had felt unbearable. His eyes dropped to the papers again.I wasn't asking for any of his property or making any extra demands. I wanted only to end the marriage and keep Ethan primarily in my care under the temporary parenting agreement Damian had already signed. My signature was on the final page, dated before I left New York. His grip tightened around the papers. So I hadn't been throwing a tantrum.I hadn't been waiting in another apartment for him to c

After Sofia stormed out of Damian's office, the room stayed quiet.Plenty of people outside had seen what happened, but no one was foolish enough to gossip where Damian might hear.Rachel sent me a message.Everyone's betting on how long he can keep putting up with her.I replied with a smiling emoji and left it there. How capable Sofia was, or how much longer Damian could tolerate her, had nothing to do with me anymore.Damian had criticized me plenty of times too. The difference was that I never cried or walked out when he pointed out a mistake. I wrote everything down, fixed it, and made sure I didn't repeat it.I lost my parents young and got through college and law school on scholarships, loans, and part-time work. When I joined Caruso & Associates, I had no family name or connections.Damian didn't make things easier.I stayed late night after night, reading contracts, case law, and transaction records until I understood every line. Whenever I got stuck, I went to the senior atto

Damian never appeared at our first divorce hearing.Sofia called him again that morning, and he stayed with her instead. The hearing was postponed.I wasn't surprised.Once my resignation and Ethan's relocation paperwork were complete, I officially left Caruso & Associates.I didn't go to see Damian, and I had no intention of saying goodbye. Instead, I had my private attorney send the divorce papers to his house.Damian had already signed the temporary parenting agreement and Ethan's relocation consent. All that remained was ending the marriage itself. If he signed the divorce papers too, the rest of the process could move forward without much trouble.I looked at the delivery confirmation on my phone, then closed the page.Goodbye, Damian. From now on, you could let anyone stand beside you in public without worrying that Ethan or I might reveal what we were to you.The night before our flight, I asked Ethan one last time."Sweetheart, Mom is going to separate from Dad and take you som

"Mr. Caruso, thank you for letting us stay here."Ethan said it again.I looked down at him, and something tightened in my chest. His eyes were already red, but he still held his chin up, refusing to cry.For eight years, Damian had never publicly acknowledged our marriage.I had handled contracts, lawsuits, and high-profile cases for Caruso & Associates, helping him build the firm's reputation piece by piece. Yet in front of everyone else, I was still only one of his lawyers. When Ethan was younger, he didn't understand. He would run toward Damian and call him Dad the moment he saw him.Every time, Damian stopped him."Not here, Ethan."Eventually, Ethan learned. Around other people, he simply stopped calling Damian anything at all.At home, though, he still called him Dad in a small, careful voice.Today, for the first time, he had chosen a name for the distance between them.Mr. Caruso. And Damian looked like he couldn't stand hearing it."Ethan."He stepped closer with a frown."Wh
