Chapter 4

Autor: Ethereal
"Mr. Caruso, thank you for letting us stay here."

Ethan said it again.

I looked down at him, and something tightened in my chest. His eyes were already red, but he still held his chin up, refusing to cry.

For eight years, Damian had never publicly acknowledged our marriage.

I had handled contracts, lawsuits, and high-profile cases for Caruso & Associates, helping him build the firm's reputation piece by piece. Yet in front of everyone else, I was still only one of his lawyers.

When Ethan was younger, he didn't understand. He would run toward Damian and call him Dad the moment he saw him.

Every time, Damian stopped him.

"Not here, Ethan."

Eventually, Ethan learned. Around other people, he simply stopped calling Damian anything at all.

At home, though, he still called him Dad in a small, careful voice.

Today, for the first time, he had chosen a name for the distance between them.

Mr. Caruso.

And Damian looked like he couldn't stand hearing it.

"Ethan."

He stepped closer with a frown.

"Why are you calling me that?"

Ethan moved nearer to me instead of answering and took my hand.

"Mom, let's go. We shouldn't bother them."

I nodded.

"Okay."

We had planned to leave anyway.

I led Ethan toward the door, but Damian quickly came after us.

"Wait."

He stepped in front of us.

"Your luggage is still upstairs."

"We don't need it."

"Ethan's clothes and things are up there."

"I can replace whatever he needs."

Most of what remained upstairs had been collected over eight years. Taking it with me would only mean packing pieces of that life into boxes.

Then he looked at Ethan.

"If you need anything while you're away, tell me."

Ethan lowered his head and moved behind me.

I met Damian's eyes.

"I can take care of my son. You've always been worried someone might misunderstand our relationship. If you suddenly start acting like a concerned father, Sofia may start asking questions."

Damian was one of the best attorneys in New York. He could argue for hours in court without hesitation.

But standing in front of his own wife and son, he couldn't find a single word.

Then he noticed the elegant box of chocolates in Sofia's hands. He took it from her and held it out to Ethan.

"And this."

"I missed your birthday yesterday. Consider it a belated gift."

Sofia hesitated.

"Damian, those are—"

He cut her off.

"He likes sweets."

Despite everything, a little hope returned to Ethan's eyes, and I didn't stop him.

Ethan opened the box and reached for one of the chocolates. Just before he put it in his mouth, I noticed the flavor card tucked inside the lid.

Pistachio praline.

My face changed.

"Ethan, don't eat that."

Startled, he lowered his hand. I took the chocolate from him and checked the ingredients, my fingers tightening around the packaging.

Ethan was allergic to pistachios. The last time he ate them, his lips had swollen so badly that we ended up in the emergency room.

He saw my expression and frowned.

"Elena, what is it?"

I looked at him.

"Ethan is allergic to pistachios."He was diagnosed when he was five."

I held his gaze.

"You didn't know?"

"I didn't know," he said.

The small spark in Ethan's eyes disappeared.

"It's okay," he said quietly.

Ethan tightened his grip around my hand.

"You're never around me. Of course you wouldn't know."

Damian went completely still.

"Ethan…"

"Mom, let's go."

This time, Ethan didn't look at him again.

I set the chocolates down and led Ethan toward the door.

"Elena," Damian called. "I'm handling a divorce case in London tomorrow. I'll bring you both back when I return."

"Have you read the file?"

"Not yet."

I said nothing and left.

The next morning, as Ethan and I boarded our flight, a message appeared on my phone.

Your divorce petition has been served on Damian Caruso.

The first hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.

He didn't know it was ours.

Damian thought he was leaving New York to end a stranger's marriage.

"So after eight years, you still think I was a woman who would do anything to marry you."Damian's expression stiffened."Elena, that's not what I meant.""It's exactly what you meant."I looked at him and realized I wasn't even disappointed anymore.I was simply tired of being misunderstood."Damian, did it ever occur to you that eight years ago, I was the one trying to leave?"His brows drew together."What are you talking about?"For a moment, I was back at the Caruso & Associates anniversary gala.Damian had been drinking, but something about him had seemed wrong. He could barely walk, so I helped him back to his hotel room.I got him water, made sure he was in bed, and turned to leave.I had almost reached the door when he grabbed me.That was when I realized he wasn't simply drunk.I suspected someone had put something in his drink.I told him to let me go. I tried to get away, but Damian wasn't in a state to understand what I was saying. What happened afterward had never been so

Damian looked at Sofia standing in his way."I'm not lying to you."His voice was calm and final."I love Elena. I'm going to find her."He pulled his arm free and left the house without looking back.By then, Ethan and I had already settled into life in Seattle. My new job had not officially started yet, so my days were simple. I took Ethan to school in the morning, came home to unpack and organize the house, and occasionally handled a few independent legal consultations. The quiet still felt unfamiliar. No midnight calls from the firm. No contracts waiting on my laptop. No wondering whether Damian would come home or disappear again.Rachel told me from time to time that Damian kept asking where we were.I didn't care.He could look for me if he wanted.I wasn't going back.Eventually, my attorney confirmed that Ethan and I were living in Seattle after Damian requested visitation.A few weeks later, after dropping Ethan off at school, I was watering the flowers in the front yard when

When he finally returned home, he sat alone in the dark living room with the judgment in his hands. The house was completely silent.Dad.He suddenly remembered Ethan using that word when he was younger, and how often Damian had corrected him.Not outside. Not when other people were around.Call me Mr. Caruso. He had always claimed it was better if no one knew he had a wife and son. The truth was that he had never believed the marriage should have existed. Now Ethan had finally done exactly what Damian wanted. And hearing Mr. Caruso had felt unbearable. His eyes dropped to the papers again.I wasn't asking for any of his property or making any extra demands. I wanted only to end the marriage and keep Ethan primarily in my care under the temporary parenting agreement Damian had already signed. My signature was on the final page, dated before I left New York. His grip tightened around the papers. So I hadn't been throwing a tantrum.I hadn't been waiting in another apartment for him to c

After Sofia stormed out of Damian's office, the room stayed quiet.Plenty of people outside had seen what happened, but no one was foolish enough to gossip where Damian might hear.Rachel sent me a message.Everyone's betting on how long he can keep putting up with her.I replied with a smiling emoji and left it there. How capable Sofia was, or how much longer Damian could tolerate her, had nothing to do with me anymore.Damian had criticized me plenty of times too. The difference was that I never cried or walked out when he pointed out a mistake. I wrote everything down, fixed it, and made sure I didn't repeat it.I lost my parents young and got through college and law school on scholarships, loans, and part-time work. When I joined Caruso & Associates, I had no family name or connections.Damian didn't make things easier.I stayed late night after night, reading contracts, case law, and transaction records until I understood every line. Whenever I got stuck, I went to the senior atto

Damian never appeared at our first divorce hearing.Sofia called him again that morning, and he stayed with her instead. The hearing was postponed.I wasn't surprised.Once my resignation and Ethan's relocation paperwork were complete, I officially left Caruso & Associates.I didn't go to see Damian, and I had no intention of saying goodbye. Instead, I had my private attorney send the divorce papers to his house.Damian had already signed the temporary parenting agreement and Ethan's relocation consent. All that remained was ending the marriage itself. If he signed the divorce papers too, the rest of the process could move forward without much trouble.I looked at the delivery confirmation on my phone, then closed the page.Goodbye, Damian. From now on, you could let anyone stand beside you in public without worrying that Ethan or I might reveal what we were to you.The night before our flight, I asked Ethan one last time."Sweetheart, Mom is going to separate from Dad and take you som
