Chapter 2

Author: July Moon
I let out a bitter laugh.

"In that case, there's no point in keeping this baby either."

Rob couldn't have cared less.

"Some bastard from God knows where. Better off aborted."

My nails dug into my palms. I never thought Rob would call his own child a bastard. He probably had no idea that this child would be the only bloodline he'd ever have.

Rob had low sperm count. We'd been married five years and never conceived.

The Balmer family had produced only one son per generation for nine straight generations. When they found out about Rob's condition, they were frantic.

After begging me nonstop, I went abroad for IVF. It took three grueling years before I finally got pregnant with this one.

I came home wanting to surprise him. Turns out, he had a much bigger surprise for me.

I was planning to call my lawyer to start drafting divorce papers when Lily hung up with a sharp click. Her eyes were blazing. She slapped me across the face.

"So you are just a beggar! Trying to pin some random bastard on Rob!"

In my entire life, no one had ever hit me before.

I was shaking with rage. I reached over and pressed the emergency panic button right next to the villa gate.

Lily didn't stop me. She just watched me with a cold smirk.

"You tramp. Do you have any idea what the Balmer name means in this city? I could beat you to death right here and no one would dare say a word."

I glared back at her coldly.

The Balmers were wealthy, but so was my family. Marrying Rob had actually been a step down for me.

How many of his company's bids had succeeded because of my family's connections?

Even the property manager here — I was the one who'd made him supervisor because I thought he'd been attentive enough back in the day.

Within three minutes, property security showed up.

I scanned the group and frowned. I didn't see Thomas Frist, the one I knew.

Before I could speak, Lily batted her lashes at the lead security guard, who turned out to be her cousin.

"Lukas! It's this bitch right here. She's carrying some mystery baby and claiming it's Rob's. I can't get rid of her!"

My stomach turned at the sight of Lily's smug face.

"Get your manager, Thomas, here," I said coldly. "Then you'll find out whether I'm Mrs. Balmer or not."

The guard hesitated.

"Thomas is on a business trip. You know him?"

Lily spat loudly.

"Oh, so that's how you got in! You're sleeping with the property manager! That baby in your belly must be his!"

Someone muttered, "Isn't Thomas married?"

Lily sneered. "So she's a serial homewrecker! Got used up by some married man and now she's looking for Rob to play daddy!"

I gritted my teeth so hard it hurt.

"I am not a mistress. My name is Sherry Knight, and Rob Balmer got down on one knee to marry me!"

But no one was listening. They were all sneering at me.

"She's pretty enough, but she had to go and throw herself at a taken man."

"And of all people, she picks a fight with Lily? That's suicide! Everyone knows Mr. Balmer spoils Lily rotten."

"He's even moved her into his place. They're probably getting married soon. This homewrecker must've found out and came to cause trouble."

At that, Lily's face went dark. She grabbed my hair and slapped me across the face twice more.

"Bitch. I knew you were up to no good."

Her sharp nails tore right through my skin. Warm blood ran into my eye, and the whole world turned red.

But Lily wasn't done. She unhooked the dog leashes and let the mastiffs loose.

"Haven't fed them today. Why don't you be their dinner?"

The second they were free, the drooling mastiffs lunged at me.

"I don't believe it! You love me — I'm not some substitute for anyone!"Rob, I'm already carrying your child. Are you going to abandon us?"The disgust on Rob's face suddenly froze. His gaze instinctively dropped to Lily's belly. The Balmers froze too.Rob's grandmother had been clutching Lily's hair, but at those words, she stopped and blurted out, "You're really pregnant? Is it Rob's child?"Rob's mother's eyes flickered. She cleared her throat."Sherry, look... regardless of everything, she's pregnant now. The baby is innocent. Why don't we wait until she gives birth, and then deal with her?"With that, she shot Rob a meaningful look. After a long pause, Rob gulped and said quietly, "Sherry, let me take Lily for an ultrasound first."Knowing he was in the wrong, he couldn't even look me in the eye.I laughed bitterly to myself. I saw right through him.He didn't love me. He chose his heir over me.I said coldly, "Why not sign the divorce papers before you go? That way, y

Hearing Rob's arrogant confidence, I was shaking with rage. What made him so sure that after everything that had happened, I would still choose to stay with him?Did he really think his charm was so irresistible that I'd lost all my senses?I couldn't hold back any longer. I threw open the curtain."Rob Balmer. I'm saying it to your face right now. I want a divorce."At the sound of my weak, hoarse voice, Rob spun around. Guilt flickered across his eyes."Sherry, I was so scared. How are you feeling now? Do your wounds still hurt?"After everything I'd been through, I could see clearly now. His concern and worry might have been real in that moment — but more than that, he was terrified of losing my family's backing. His false affection couldn't fool me anymore. He reached out tenderly to check my wounds. I yanked my hand away and said flatly, "Mom. Get this man out of here. I never want to see him again."Rob flinched. He grabbed my hand forcefully and lowered his voice."Sh

"Sherry, it really is you!"The moment our eyes met, my mother had no doubt left. She shoved Lily aside and rushed straight to me.She pushed back my tangled hair — and there, exposed to her view, were the bite marks from those savage dogs, and the raised welts from all those slaps. She looked at the horrific injuries covering my body, and her eyes filled with pain and fury."Rob. Explain to me. Right now. Why is my precious daughter beaten to a pulp like this?""Mom, she's just a f—"Rob walked over, ready to explain — but then his eyes landed on my face. His expression shifted completely."Sherry?! It's you!"The shock and pain in his eyes, as far as I was concerned, was nothing but an act.A sharp, searing pain tore through my abdomen. I grabbed my mother's hand with the last of my strength and said the most important thing before I blacked out."Mom. I want a divorce from Rob."When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in my family's private hospital.Through the curtai

That resounding slap stunned everyone. After a brief silence, I heard someone gulp nervously."Who is this person? She actually dared to hit Mr. Balmer!"Someone in the know whispered, "This is the Knight family from Greth City! The Knights usually keep a low profile, but in reality, they're the old-money aristocrats of this city!""The Balmers are just a bunch of nouveaux riche! Without the Knights' backing, that Balmer guy would be nothing!"Rob heard it too. His face turned ugly.In normal times, anyone who dared humiliate him wouldn't live to see the next day.But now, standing before my mother, Elaine Knight, he had no choice but to swallow his pride.A flicker of suppressed rage crossed his face. He took a deep breath and turned to my mother."Mom, what's going on? Isn't Sherry abroad resting? I went to see her just last month. Did something happen to her?"By the end, Rob's face had gone pale, and his voice carried a note of genuine anxiety."What happened to Sherry?
