Chapter 1

Author: Elevina
As soon as the men finished speaking, I fought through the excruciating pain and desperately dragged myself toward the door, straining my hoarse voice to call for help.

Mom and the others had only just swallowed the pills, and the poison hadn’t fully taken effect yet.

If they could get to a hospital in time, they could still be saved.

Perhaps my cries had reached someone, because I heard footsteps stop outside the door, followed by a slight rattle as someone tried to open it.

“Are you out of your mind?” a man shouted angrily. “The orders from above were crystal clear. No one is to open this door before Lucas returns.”

Another man sounded uneasy as he lowered his voice and asked, “But something doesn’t sound right in there. What if something’s happened?”

The first man let out a cold laugh, clearly convinced he was right. “Opening the door now and ruining the Don’s plan would be a real disaster. Just think about it. All it took was a word from Hailey, and the Don immediately got everyone involved in this whole charade. Besides, it’s only one night. What could possibly happen to a few women?”

His words drained the last of my strength. So it had all been a lie.

Lucas hadn’t been shot dead. My father and brother were still alive.

Yet because of Hailey’s prank, my mother, my sister-in-law, my niece, and I were now paying for it with our lives.

We could have spent a peaceful Christmas together. Why had everything turned out like this?

Just an hour ago, everyone had been laughing and talking, and now they lay motionless on the floor. Tears streamed down my face.

My brother Richard’s daughter, Mia, wasn’t even five years old.

Just moments ago, she had been clinging to my leg, pleading in her sweet little voice, “Fiona, your food smells so good! Can’t I have a taste before everyone else?”

I had smiled and promised her, “Not yet, sweetheart. You’ll get the first taste when it’s ready.”

Now dinner was ready, but she would never get the chance to taste it.

Mia had no idea what was happening. Even as she opened her mouth to take the pill, she looked at her mother in confusion and asked, “Mommy, this pill tastes so bitter, and I’m not even sick. Do I really have to take it?”

My sister-in-law, Jenny, fought back her tears and choked out, “Be good, Mia. It’s sweet, sweetheart. Once you take it, we’ll be able to see Daddy.”

Hearing her mother’s words, Mia happily swallowed the pill without another thought.

I was the last in line, but Mom, Catherine, didn’t give me one.

Instead, she quietly pulled me into a room and removed all the clothes from the closet, revealing a hidden compartment inside that was just large enough to conceal one person.

“This was prepared in case of an emergency,” she explained, urging me inside. “Fiona, hurry. You’re the Donna, and you’re smart. If you can stay hidden until this is over, you’ll survive.”

I shook my head frantically, refusing to go, but Mom insisted on pushing me into the compartment. She looked at me as if she couldn’t bear to say goodbye. “Someone has to survive to lay us to rest.”

That was her final wish, and I couldn’t bear to leave her with that regret, so I obediently hid inside.

But once I saw her close her eyes in peace, I climbed back out.

Everyone was gone, and being the only one left alive wasn’t a blessing; it was a torment I could no longer bear.

I took out the jeweled dagger Lucas had given me and ended my life.

I had thought we could at least be together in death.

Now even that hope was gone.

Outside, the men continued their conversation, still unaware of what had happened. “Fiona would raise hell if she found out the truth,” one of them remarked.

“She won’t stay mad at her husband forever. Once the Don comes back tomorrow, they’ll make up and everything will go back to normal.”

But there would be no tomorrow for me.

Hearing Hailey speak with such shameless defiance, Richard rushed over in a fit of rage and shoved her to the ground.Yet she continued laughing, and the more she laughed, the more chilling it became.“Let me tell you something else. I was the one who started the fire all those years ago. I deliberately knocked Fiona unconscious and planned to throw her into the flames to burn alive. And what did you do? You took the very person who tried to kill your daughter into your home and then expected your own daughter to keep putting up with me.”Her confession shattered what little composure they had left, and I was no exception. It felt as though another knife had pierced my chest, leaving me in unbearable pain.Every time I had accommodated Hailey and swallowed my grievances over the past ten years had now become a cruel joke.Without her, I could have lived a life filled with happiness.Lucas's expression turned icy as he ordered in a low voice, “Take her away immediately. Hailey’s legs nearly gave way, and she almost collapsed to the floor. She struggled to suppress her fear and remain calm, but before she could ask why everyone was sitting there, the door opened.Claude, the man who had extorted money from her earlier that day, appeared before them, covered in blood and badly injured.Their eyes met, but Hailey immediately lowered her head guiltily.Richard ignored Claude’s injuries and pressed his foot hard against them. “Claude, you deliberately delivered a false message and caused our family to die. If you confess who was behind this, I might consider leaving you with your whole body.”Hailey deliberately tried to confuse the issue. “Maybe he had his own motives and did everything by himself.”My father shook his head. “He’s only a subordinate. A single dose of that poison costs five hundred thousand dollars. He couldn’t possibly manage it alone.”Lucas waved to his assistant and ordered, “I have no more patience to waste on him. Starting now, cut o

Although they no longer questioned Hailey, they refused to believe that we had all taken our own lives for no reason.Finding the person responsible became their sole obsession, and they sent the bodies to the most prestigious forensic institute for examination. The forensic pathologist confirmed that everyone except me had died from poisoning. “This is an extremely rare poison, with Taxine B as its main ingredient. It can only be extracted from large quantities of yew trees.”Everyone’s expression turned grave at those words.Throughout Sicily, the only place where hundreds of yew trees were cultivated was the Rossetti family’s private greenhouse.Hailey feigned shock and exclaimed, “So the Rossetti family was behind all of this!”“No, they aren’t the killers,” Lucas immediately rejected the idea.Although he had always been at odds with the Rossetti family, he knew them well enough to understand that they preferred direct confrontation and would never stoop to such despicable methods

Hailey stood outside, watching everything unfold, her face as pale as a sheet. She had just turned to leave when Lucas stopped her.“Hailey, where do you think you’re going? Your prank has left them all dead. You owe us an explanation.”He raised his gun and aimed it at her.Terrified, Hailey’s legs gave way, and she dropped to her knees, shaking her head frantically. “I didn’t do it! I swear, I don’t know anything about this.”My father questioned her in a low, stern voice. “If we hadn’t stayed to celebrate your birthday, how would they have died?”“Is celebrating my birthday a crime?”Hailey’s eyes reddened as tears streamed down her face.“I’ve been with all of you since last night. If I had done anything, you would know better than anyone. If I’d known this prank would cost them their lives, I never would have suggested it in the first place.”Richard stared straight into her eyes. “But wasn’t the fake-death prank your idea?”Hailey nodded, readily admitting it. “Yes, it was my ide

My father could hardly believe what he was seeing, repeating over and over, “Impossible. How could this have happened?”He stumbled over to Mom and gently caressed her face. “Catherine, I’m home. Open your eyes and look at me, please. How could you be so foolish? It was only a joke. Please, don’t leave me!”But Mom didn’t respond. He rested his head against her chest, where her heartbeat had long since stopped, yet he continued to shout, “Call a doctor! I’ll find the best doctor to save you!”Seeing my father’s regret brought me no satisfaction.Dad, it was too late. The moment you agreed to Hailey’s prank, you sealed our fate.Richard used up all his strength just getting those few steps to his wife and daughter before sinking to the floor, desperately shaking their bodies. “Mia, are you angry with Daddy because I didn’t come home on time? Please don’t be like this. I even bought you the rabbit plushie you’ve wanted for so long!”But Mia’s lips remained tightly closed, and the little

Early the next morning, the cars for the journey home were lined up neatly outside the estate. My father held a bouquet of tulips in his arms, knowing they were my mother’s favorite flowers. Before they set off, he made a point of reminding everyone, “Once we get back and reveal the truth, every one of us must apologize. We made them worry all night, so if they’re angry with us, we’ll have to be understanding.”Richard gazed fondly at the gifts he had prepared for his wife and daughter, a ring he had made by hand, engraved with Jenny’s name, and the stuffed bunny Mia had been begging him for.He smiled. “Once they see these, they won’t be angry anymore.”Meanwhile, Lucas carefully folded the coat he had brought for me, smoothing out every wrinkle before putting it away.Hailey teased him, “The heating at home is more than enough. Why would Fiona need such a thick coat?”“You don’t understand,” Lucas explained, his attention still fixed on the coat. “She gets cold easily.”Seeing how mu
