"Fine. Whatever you say."

Luca blinked. He'd been ready to be even harsher with me over what he called my "tantrums."

He hadn't expected me to give in so easily this time.

Avery walked up to Luca and straightened his rumpled collar as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

She pressed her lips together, pretending to feel uncomfortable.

"Luca, if I stand right in the middle, people might say I don't know my place.

"Let's just forget it. Chloe doesn't look too happy, and I don't want to ruin the mood for you two."

She was always like this. She knew exactly how to play sweet and proper.

Luca's face darkened instantly. He took Avery's hand.

"Avery, you're too understanding for your own good.

"If you hadn't brought her to that Lorenzetti family ball, she wouldn't even have been good enough to meet me!"

My heart sank a little further with every word.

To Luca, I was just an ordinary girl. He'd once told me, in that soft voice of his, not to worry about the gap between our worlds.

He'd said he loved me and would never let anyone make me feel small.

Now he was saying things like this to defend Avery.

He didn't care how I felt.

I took out my bank card and quietly paid for the photo shoot.

Luca glanced at me.

"This place is a Lorenzetti business. You don't have to pay."

"We're not officially married yet. It's better to keep things separate."

I turned to the staff, keeping my voice flat.

"Email me the raw files. Make the poster the way Luca wants it. As for the rest, do whatever you like."

Then I changed out of the dress and walked out of the studio alone.

Luca came after me and caught hold of me.

"What are you sulking about now? Are you jealous of Avery and me? If there were anything between us, you wouldn't be the one I'm with.

"Chloe, how did I never notice how immature you are?"

I pulled free of his grip.

"I told you, I agreed. I'm just tired from the shoot."

He stared at me for a long moment, then softened his tone.

"Avery's our friend. We're engaged, and seeing us together sometimes makes her feel left out. That's why I try to consider her feelings.

"After all, she's the one who introduced us."

He kissed my cheek.

"Oh, didn't you say our custom rings were ready? Want to pick them up now?"

Avery came running out, back in her own clothes.

Grinning as if nothing had happened, she squeezed in between us.

"It's been such a long day. I'm starving. What are we eating?

"How about Japanese? Sashimi?"

Luca said yes right away without asking what I wanted.

He seemed to have forgotten that I never ate raw food.

I interrupted them.

"Let's go. We need to pick up the rings first."

At the jewelry store, our two diamond rings waited in a velvet box.

I'd spent most of a year designing them and overseeing every detail of the jeweler's work.

My initials and Luca's were engraved inside the bands.

Luca picked up my wedding ring, but his gaze went to Avery's hand.

"Avery, your fingers are about the same size as Chloe's. Try it on for her.

"You know how she is. She's careless, and she doesn't know quality when she sees it."

"Luca, that's not right."

I stared at Luca in disbelief.

This was my wedding ring. How could he let another woman try it on?

Avery laughed and refused too, but I saw the challenge in her eyes.

"Yeah, Luca, this is Chloe's wedding ring. What would people think if I wore it?"

"We're just checking the size and fit. I trust your judgment more than anyone's. Chloe won't mind, right?"

Luca glanced at me. Before I could answer, he took Avery's hand and slowly slid my wedding ring onto her ring finger.

It fit perfectly, like it had been made for her.

Avery held up her hand and admired the diamond sparkling in the light.

"It's beautiful. I heard Chloe spent most of a year designing it."

"That's enough."

I stared at them, my face expressionless.

"You can take it off now."

"Don't be mad, Chloe. I'll take it off right now."

Avery flinched. Her eyes filled with tears as she tried to pull off the ring.

But it caught on her knuckle. No matter how hard she pulled, it wouldn't come off.

"Ow, it hurts. I think it's stuck."

Luca immediately took her hand, handling it with care.

"Hold still. You'll hurt yourself."

He turned and glared at me.

"Why didn't you order it half a size bigger? Are you happy now that you've hurt Avery?"

How could Luca say something so absurd?

In that moment, my heart sank.

I didn't argue with Luca or lose my temper. I quietly saved the wedding photo of the three of us that had just arrived on my phone.

Maybe it would come in handy someday.

After more than half an hour of struggling, the ring still wouldn't come off.

Luca looked at Avery's red knuckle and made up his mind. "Forget it. Wear it for today. We'll deal with it when the swelling goes down. The wedding's still a few days away."

He helped Avery out of the store and left me behind.

I followed them in silence and headed for the front passenger seat of the Maybach out of habit.

As soon as I sat down, I knew something was off. The seat had been adjusted.

Then I spotted a pair of black lace panties wedged in the passenger seat's crease.

I recognized them.

They were Avery's.

The auction had already started when Luca came in, his eyes red. Avery wasn't with him. They must have had it out. Then he bid like a madman and bought every piece I'd designed. When I found out, I just shrugged."If some rich guy insists on throwing money at me, who am I to say no?"After the auction, Luca showed up in front of me again."Chloe, I saw the video."His voice was raw."I know I was wrong about you. Could you... could you give me one more chance?"We were together for seven years. Seven whole years! Can you really just throw me away?"I looked at his face.I'd looked at that face for seven years.I used to ache when it frowned and smile when it smiled. Now, looking at it, all I saw was a stranger.I took a step back."Seven years is exactly why. It was way too long, so I'm not wasting the next seven on you."That seemed to break him.Luca's eyes were red as he rasped, "Chloe, do you really have to torture me like this?"If you'll just change your mind, I'll never talk to

Once Luca knew I was in New York, he stayed.I'd heard he'd cleared his schedule for the next six months and handed the Lorenzetti family's affairs to his underboss for now.Every morning on my way to work, I'd see him standing on the corner, staring in my direction. He never came closer. He just watched me from a distance.Three months flew by. My first collection, Daybreak, got the highest score in the company's internal review. The marketing team was much more enthusiastic than anyone expected, and the presale sold out on the first day.The company decided to strike while the iron was hot. It would auction the pieces and invite industry figures and potential clients.Luca managed to get an invitation too.The day before the auction, I stayed late at work. When I came out of the building, Luca was waiting at the curb.He took a few steps toward me, then stopped."Chloe, I've had time to think. I had someone track down the rehearsal footage, but the photographer said you took the vide

Luca immediately bought a ticket on the next flight to New York. But once he calmed down, he realized there was a problem.New York was huge: more than eight million people, five boroughs, and countless streets. He had no idea where I'd gone. Finding me would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. He sat in his car all night. Just before dawn, he went back to my parents' house. This time he didn't say anything. He just sank to his knees in front of the door. When my mom opened the door, he scared her half to death."Eve, I know I was wrong. Please tell me where Chloe is. I'll go bring her home."My mom scoffed."You know you were wrong?"Then she went back inside, came out with a few sheets of paper, and threw them down in front of him. They were records from the ER.Luca picked them up.The records read, "Right palm: open wound, glass fragments embedded. Cleaned and closed with seven stitches."Back: multiple wounds, glass fragments embedded. Cleaned and closed with nine stitches

When Luca got back to his car in a daze, Avery was sitting in the passenger seat, looking at him with concern."Luca, don't be like this."Nobody knows better than me how much she loves you. She's just throwing a fit this time. She'll be back in a few days."Luca stared blankly at her.It suddenly hit him that he'd once promised this seat would always be Chloe's.Because it was the seat closest to him. From there, they could see each other.Somewhere along the way, Avery had started taking that seat whenever she was around. Then Luca noticed something wedged in the crease of the seat, and he went still.A pair of black lace panties. He had no idea how they'd gotten there. And he had even less idea whether Chloe had seen them. That day, after the jewelry store, Chloe had gotten into the passenger seat out of habit. She'd only sat there for a second before quietly moving to the back.He hadn't noticed a thing back then. He'd been too focused on the ring stuck on Avery's finger.Avery fol

The church was empty. All the decorations had been taken down. Only the welcome poster was still standing, right in the middle. It was the photo of the three of us.Luca stood in the center, with Avery smiling sweetly as she held his arm. I stood awkwardly at the edge.Luca's friends and relatives trickled in. When they saw the empty church, their confusion turned to shock."What's going on? Are we in the wrong place?""I was here yesterday. Everything was fine at the rehearsal!""Look at this poster... Why is Avery in the middle?"Luca finally snapped out of it. His face tight with anger, he pulled out his phone and called the wedding planner."Where are the decorations? Why is everything gone?"Paul sounded at a loss."Mr. Lorenzetti, I called you yesterday, but no one picked up."Ms. Russo told me to cancel all the decorations yesterday, and she paid the cancellation fee. I emailed you about it too."Luca went rigid.Someone nearby muttered, "Don't tell me Chloe walked out on the we

Back at the hotel, I got a text from my bank about a charge. My card had just been charged 50,000 euros. The charge came from the most exclusive jewelry store in Palermo.I remembered Avery saying the day before that she wanted a one-of-a-kind tiara to go with her gown.I looked at the text and couldn't even summon the energy to be angry.I'd given that card to Luca myself. When we first got together, the Lorenzetti name was so big that everyone thought I was a gold digger.I didn't want Luca to think so too. So I did the dumbest, most sincere thing I could think of: I handed him the savings I'd built up over the years.I was so nervous when I told him, "Luca, it's not much, but it's everything I have."Luca had been deeply moved. He'd locked the card in his safe and never touched it.Now he'd deliberately used that card to buy another woman a custom tiara fancy enough to upstage the bride.I didn't call Luca or text him to demand answers.I just waited quietly for the final rehearsal.
