Back at the hotel, I got a text from my bank about a charge.

My card had just been charged 50,000 euros.

The charge came from the most exclusive jewelry store in Palermo.

I remembered Avery saying the day before that she wanted a one-of-a-kind tiara to go with her gown.

I looked at the text and couldn't even summon the energy to be angry.

I'd given that card to Luca myself.

When we first got together, the Lorenzetti name was so big that everyone thought I was a gold digger.

I didn't want Luca to think so too. So I did the dumbest, most sincere thing I could think of: I handed him the savings I'd built up over the years.

I was so nervous when I told him, "Luca, it's not much, but it's everything I have."

Luca had been deeply moved.

He'd locked the card in his safe and never touched it.

Now he'd deliberately used that card to buy another woman a custom tiara fancy enough to upstage the bride.

I didn't call Luca or text him to demand answers.

I just waited quietly for the final rehearsal.

Three days later, I showed up at the church for the rehearsal right on time.

Avery was already there.

She was wearing that silver couture gown, standing at the altar and talking with Luca about where to put the flowers.

The lights caught the exquisite diamond tiara on her head. It was worth a fortune.

When Luca saw me, his relaxed expression turned into a scowl.

"What you said that day was way out of line. Avery cried all night! That tiara will count as your apology to her."

He came over as if there were nothing to discuss.

I said nothing. I just looked around the reception hall. The decorations weren't what I'd agreed on with the wedding planner.

"Avery has good taste, so I had her change a few details," Luca said. "The whole setup looks much classier now."

I nodded like I didn't care. Then I picked up the seating chart Avery had put together.

The front row on the right was for Luca's family.

The front row on the left, which was supposed to be for my family, listed Avery and her family instead.

When Avery saw me staring at the chart, her eyes filled with tears.

"I... I just wanted to be close by to help Luca with the older relatives. Chloe, don't be mad. I'll change it right now."

As she spoke, she hurried over to take the chart from me.

Before I could react, she grabbed my hand and used it to slap herself across the face.

"Ah!"

Avery screamed, clutched her face, and collapsed to the floor.

"Avery!"

Without thinking, Luca shoved me hard out of the way to get to Avery.

"Chloe! Have you lost your mind? Avery already apologized. Why would you hit her?!"

I didn't see it coming. I fell backward and slammed into the champagne tower behind me.

Crystal glasses crashed down. Shards cut into my back and palms, and blood streaked my long white dress before spreading across the carpet.

Luca gave me a cold look. Without a word, he picked Avery up and walked out of the church without looking back.

The staff and Lorenzetti family members milled around in confusion, but nobody dared help me up.

I sat there in the broken glass, looking at the blood all over my hands.

The strange thing was, it didn't hurt at all.

For seven years, I'd worn down every sharp edge of myself to fit into his world and endured every slight.

Now these shards had cut through the last of my illusions.

I took out my phone and called my wedding planner, Paul Morrison.

"Hello, Mr. Morrison?"

"Ms. Russo, how's the rehearsal going? We're doing the final lighting checks..."

I looked at the wreckage in the hall and spoke slowly, one word at a time.

"Cancel everything for tomorrow. The wedding is off. Take down all the decorations except the welcome poster."

"What? Does Mr. Lorenzetti know?"

"He doesn't need to know."

In the ER, a doctor was cleaning my wounds.

While I was getting stitched up, my phone buzzed. It was Luca.

"Take some time to calm down. Avery's parents are sitting in the front row tomorrow. If you can't accept that, I guess the wedding's off."

Even now, he was still using the wedding to control me.

He'd always known how much I was looking forward to it.

I looked at the screen and let out a soft laugh.

Then I turned off my phone without replying.

After stitching me up, the doctor told me to keep the wounds dry, avoid lifting anything heavy, and have someone stay with me if possible.

I nodded, left the hospital, and went straight to the hotel.

My suitcase was already packed.

At one in the morning, I dragged my suitcase into the airport.

While I waited in line to check in, I scrolled to Avery's page.

Her latest photo showed two hands, fingers laced together.

The diamond ring on Avery's slim finger stood out in the shot.

The caption read, "Thank you for always being here for me."

I saved the photo, then blocked her.

The next day, Luca arrived at the church, stone-faced, surrounded by the Lorenzetti family.

The moment the doors swung open, everyone froze.

The auction had already started when Luca came in, his eyes red. Avery wasn't with him. They must have had it out. Then he bid like a madman and bought every piece I'd designed. When I found out, I just shrugged."If some rich guy insists on throwing money at me, who am I to say no?"After the auction, Luca showed up in front of me again."Chloe, I saw the video."His voice was raw."I know I was wrong about you. Could you... could you give me one more chance?"We were together for seven years. Seven whole years! Can you really just throw me away?"I looked at his face.I'd looked at that face for seven years.I used to ache when it frowned and smile when it smiled. Now, looking at it, all I saw was a stranger.I took a step back."Seven years is exactly why. It was way too long, so I'm not wasting the next seven on you."That seemed to break him.Luca's eyes were red as he rasped, "Chloe, do you really have to torture me like this?"If you'll just change your mind, I'll never talk to

Once Luca knew I was in New York, he stayed.I'd heard he'd cleared his schedule for the next six months and handed the Lorenzetti family's affairs to his underboss for now.Every morning on my way to work, I'd see him standing on the corner, staring in my direction. He never came closer. He just watched me from a distance.Three months flew by. My first collection, Daybreak, got the highest score in the company's internal review. The marketing team was much more enthusiastic than anyone expected, and the presale sold out on the first day.The company decided to strike while the iron was hot. It would auction the pieces and invite industry figures and potential clients.Luca managed to get an invitation too.The day before the auction, I stayed late at work. When I came out of the building, Luca was waiting at the curb.He took a few steps toward me, then stopped."Chloe, I've had time to think. I had someone track down the rehearsal footage, but the photographer said you took the vide

Luca immediately bought a ticket on the next flight to New York. But once he calmed down, he realized there was a problem.New York was huge: more than eight million people, five boroughs, and countless streets. He had no idea where I'd gone. Finding me would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. He sat in his car all night. Just before dawn, he went back to my parents' house. This time he didn't say anything. He just sank to his knees in front of the door. When my mom opened the door, he scared her half to death."Eve, I know I was wrong. Please tell me where Chloe is. I'll go bring her home."My mom scoffed."You know you were wrong?"Then she went back inside, came out with a few sheets of paper, and threw them down in front of him. They were records from the ER.Luca picked them up.The records read, "Right palm: open wound, glass fragments embedded. Cleaned and closed with seven stitches."Back: multiple wounds, glass fragments embedded. Cleaned and closed with nine stitches

When Luca got back to his car in a daze, Avery was sitting in the passenger seat, looking at him with concern."Luca, don't be like this."Nobody knows better than me how much she loves you. She's just throwing a fit this time. She'll be back in a few days."Luca stared blankly at her.It suddenly hit him that he'd once promised this seat would always be Chloe's.Because it was the seat closest to him. From there, they could see each other.Somewhere along the way, Avery had started taking that seat whenever she was around. Then Luca noticed something wedged in the crease of the seat, and he went still.A pair of black lace panties. He had no idea how they'd gotten there. And he had even less idea whether Chloe had seen them. That day, after the jewelry store, Chloe had gotten into the passenger seat out of habit. She'd only sat there for a second before quietly moving to the back.He hadn't noticed a thing back then. He'd been too focused on the ring stuck on Avery's finger.Avery fol

The church was empty. All the decorations had been taken down. Only the welcome poster was still standing, right in the middle. It was the photo of the three of us.Luca stood in the center, with Avery smiling sweetly as she held his arm. I stood awkwardly at the edge.Luca's friends and relatives trickled in. When they saw the empty church, their confusion turned to shock."What's going on? Are we in the wrong place?""I was here yesterday. Everything was fine at the rehearsal!""Look at this poster... Why is Avery in the middle?"Luca finally snapped out of it. His face tight with anger, he pulled out his phone and called the wedding planner."Where are the decorations? Why is everything gone?"Paul sounded at a loss."Mr. Lorenzetti, I called you yesterday, but no one picked up."Ms. Russo told me to cancel all the decorations yesterday, and she paid the cancellation fee. I emailed you about it too."Luca went rigid.Someone nearby muttered, "Don't tell me Chloe walked out on the we
