Melissa's POV

I got a notification just exactly a minute after the call had ended because I had my eyes fixed on my phone and felt my heart miss countless beats in that one minute; even while Josh just assured in his words that we are going to get Hearty back.

That one minute felt like an hour. Every second that passed without a message made my chest tighter. My thumb hovered over the screen, refreshing, waiting, praying that they'd keep their word.

From the display of the notification, I knew that it was an account number and without a second guess, I also knew that it was the number even though it was an unknown number.

My hand trembled slightly as I held the phone. This was it, you know; the moment everything had been building up to.

I tapped on the notification that was still there and the message came in full.

The account details came first and then the rest of the message. "The above is the account details. Remember you have just 30 minutes to send in the money. And for your own

  • He Regrets After The Countdown to Our Divorce   Chapter 87 — Hearty was almost gone but later resuscitated

Author's POVThe moment the double doors swung shut behind Hearty's stretcher, the emergency room revived."Get her on the monitors," Dr. Adrian barked, already pulling on a fresh pair of gloves. "I need vitals now."Two nurses moved in sync, one attaching the pulse oximeter to Hearty's finger while the other wrapped the blood pressure cuff around her arm. The machines beeped as its light flashed, and the numbers that flashed on the screen made everyone in the room stiffen."BP is seventy over forty," the younger nurse called out, her voice was tight. "Pulse is thready at forty-two.""Oxygen sat?""81 percent and dropping."Dr. Adrian's jaw clenched. "Get her on high-flow oxygen. Fifteen liters. Now."The mask went over Hearty's face, fogging slightly with each shallow breath she managed. But it wasn't enough and anyone could see that."Pupils?" Dr. Adrian leaned over Hearty, pulling a penlight from his coat pocket.Nurse Benita lifted each of Hearty's eyelids carefully. The penlight

  • He Regrets After The Countdown to Our Divorce   Chapter 86 — Hearty rushed in for an emergency!

Melissa's POVThe nurses kept on touching Hearty's wrist with two fingers just to manually check her pulse and placed their ears to her nostrils to see if she was breathing because anyone might mistake her to be dead from the way she was laid and all.My throat closed up watching them work. Like I was watching this happen to someone else's sister and not mine. They went on firing off questions I could barely hear over the pounding in my ears."What happened?""How long has she been unconscious?""Does she have any allergies?"I opened my mouth but nothing came out. My brain knew the answers but my tongue wouldn't cooperate. It just sat there in my mouth, feeling heavy and useless.I tried to answer, but the words got stuck in my throat. Josh stepped in, his voice steady even though I could see the panic in his eyes.

  • He Regrets After The Countdown to Our Divorce   Chapter 85 — Heading to Memfys hospital with Hearty.

Melissa's POV"Let's get down immediately. We are taking her to the hospital right away because she needs some urgent medical attention." Josh actually backed Hearty at his back at once while I had helped to place Hearty at his back, though with his help. It was way better instead of carrying her with both of his hands. Her body was limp, too limp, and the way her head lolled to the side made my stomach twist into knots. I tried not to think about what they might have done to her as I tried not to imagine the worst.Josh backed her from the second floor from where we had seen Hearty down to the ground floor and he was very fast as if Hearty had no weight that I had to hurry up to catch up with them. But I knew he was that fast for the fact that we needed to save Hearty's life. His footsteps echoed in the stairwell, quick and steady. I could hear his breathing, heavy but controlled, like he was pushing himself harder than he should. My own breath came in s

  • He Regrets After The Countdown to Our Divorce   Chapter 84 — Let's give it some benefit of doubt.

Melissa's POVMy legs wobbled when I stood. Josh's hands gripped my arms, holding me steady as he kept me from collapsing back onto the couch. He was right. I knew he was right. They'd warned us that we shouldn't involve the police and that we shouldn't play games or even do anything stupid. And calling the cops? That would be the stupidest thing we could do right now.But knowing he was right didn't make it any easier to breathe. You know I have never experienced such things before, it all felt like I was trapped in a very tight corner and I hope and pray that it ends well before I was as scared as hell at this point but we need to do what we need to do.My whole body felt tight, like I was being squeezed from all sides with no room to move, no room to think and no room to do anything except what they told me to do.This wasn't a choice but it was a demand and a command that I had no power to refuse.Josh squeezed my hands gently. "H

  • He Regrets After The Countdown to Our Divorce   Chapter 82- Don't try to act smart.

Melissa's POVThe man over the phone said, "so, that being said, we will send the account details you will transfer the money to once the call ends. You should do that within the next 30 minutes after the call ends. Once we receive the alert, then we can go ahead and let you know where exactly you can come pick your sister."My heart skipped. Thirty minutes! My palms were already sweating, and I could feel Josh's eyes on me, watching and waiting.Unconsciously, I asked him even without thinking twice. "Where exactly?"The words just slipped out. I didn't mean to say them. They came out before I could stop myself, before I could think about how stupid they sounded."Why do you care to know where she is right away? Is that how badly you have missed her? It seems like you didn't hear me. I said that you will transfer the money to us in the account details that we will send to you. And we can only let you know where your sister is when we receive the alert. What is so difficult for you to
