Chapter 15: The Key

It was raining.

The same street. The same corner where Lucien found Milo three months ago, soaking wet, with a dead camera and no place to go.

Milo didn't recognize it at first because Lucien had parked the car and said "walk with me."

"Why are we here?" Milo asked, holding Lucien's hand, wearing Lucien's blue shirt under his rain jacket. His good luck shirt.

Lucien stopped. Under the awning of the closed bookstore where Milo used to sleep sometimes when his apartment was too cold.

"Here," Lucien said. "Right here. You were sitting here. Head down. Camera in your lap. You were shaking."

Milo remembered. He remembered being so cold he couldn't feel his fingers.

"You said 'are you okay' and I said 'I'm fine' even though I wasn't," Milo whispered.

"I know," Lucien said. "You always say you're fine when you're not."

Lucien reached into his coat pocket. Not a ring box. A small silver key.

Milo stared at it.

"This is a key to the penthouse," Lucien said. "Not the spare key I gave you that says 'guest.' This is your key. Your name is on the deed now. Lena added it this morning. My lawyer said it was 'highly irregular' and I said I don't care."

Milo's hands started shaking.

"Milo Chen," Lucien said, in the rain, on the street where they met, voice shaking a little too — and Lucien Beaumont never shook. "You threw wine for me. You saved my Tokyo deal. You taught me that possessive can mean safe. You burn my pasta and steal my hoodies and own me completely. Will you move in? Not as my boyfriend who stays over. As... as my home. Officially. Forever."

Milo was crying now, rain mixing with tears, freckles bright.

"You... you put my name on your house?"

"I put your name on everything," Lucien said. "My house, my fridge, my lock screen, my heart. I have nothing that isn't yours anymore. So will you?"

Milo didn't answer with words. He jumped on him again — his favorite thing — legs around Lucien's waist, right there in the rain, on the street where he was once homeless.

"Yes!" he shouted, loud enough for the whole street to hear. "Yes yes yes, I will, I'm yours, I live with you, I'm home!"

Lucien laughed and spun him, rain everywhere, two idiots in love on a street in New York.

He put the key in Milo's hand and closed Milo's black-nailed fingers around it.

"Mine," Milo whispered, holding the key like it was a diamond. "My house. My key. My Lucien."

"Yours," Lucien whispered back. "All yours."

They walked home in the rain — not to Lucien's penthouse anymore, but to their penthouse.

Milo unlocked the door himself for the first time with his key. It stuck a little, because it was new.

Inside, the fridge was full of notes. Eleanor's napkin. Tokyo receipt. Gala photo. Grilled cheese note. And now, Milo added the little paper tag from the key that said "MILO'S HOUSE" that Lucien had written.

He taped it right in the middle.

Then he turned to Lucien, soaking wet, hair dripping, lip piercing shining, holding his key.

"We're home," Milo said.

"We're home," Lucien said.

And for the first time since Milo was 16, he had a key that was his. A fridge that was his. A home that was his. And a man who looked at him like he was the only person in the room.

He didn't need to check phones at 3 AM anymore.

He had the key.
