LOGINMilo had never been to a real business meeting before.
He sat in the corner of Beaumont Corp's conference room at 9 AM, wearing Lucien's big blazer because Lucien told him to "look serious," holding his camera like a shield. Lena was not happy he was there. "Lucien, this is a Tokyo investor call," she whispered. "He can't—" "He can," Lucien said, not looking up from his laptop. "He's staying." The Zoom call connected. Three men in suits in Tokyo. Serious faces. They had seen the Page Six article. They had seen the wine-throwing photo. "Mr. Beaumont," one of them said in careful English. "We are concerned about stability. Your... personal life is affecting business." Lucien was about to give his CEO speech. Milo had heard it before — calm, cold, perfect. But Milo stood up first. "Can I show you something?" he asked, voice small but clear. Everyone looked at him. Lena mouthed "sit down." Lucien nodded. "Let him." Milo connected his camera to the big screen. Click. A photo appeared. It was Lucien. Not CEO Lucien. Just Lucien. In the morning, in the kitchen, wearing a loose t-shirt, making coffee with sleepy eyes. Light coming through the penthouse windows. Click. Another one. Lucien laughing on the floor of his closet, holding Milo's hoodie. Not posed. Real. Click. Lucien asleep on the couch, Milo's black nail polish smudged on his neck where Milo had held him. "I took these," Milo said to the Tokyo men. His hands were shaking but his voice wasn't. "This is Lucien. Not Mr. Beaumont. Just Lucien. Before me, he never laughed like this. He never slept without his phone next to him. He worked 16 hours a day and he was lonely." The room was silent. "I'm sorry I threw wine," Milo said. "That was my fault. I was jealous and crazy. But I'm not going anywhere. And he is not distracted. He is... he is happier. Which means he works better. Look." He showed one last photo. Lucien at his desk at 6 AM this morning, focused, writing notes, with Milo asleep on the couch behind him in the background. Both in the same frame. Work and home together. "He still works," Milo said. "He just has someone to come home to now." The Tokyo men were quiet. Then one of them smiled. A small smile. "Your boyfriend is photographer?" he asked Lucien. "He is," Lucien said. His voice was a little thick. "These are good photos," the man said. "Very... human. We like human. Our company is family company. We were worried Mr. Beaumont was becoming tabloid. But this... this is not tabloid. This is family." Lena stared. Lucien stared at Milo like he had never seen him before. "Mr. Beaumont," the Tokyo man said. "We will sign today. And we want your boyfriend to take photos for our Japan launch campaign. Family concept. Like these." After the call ended, Lena stood up slowly. She walked over to Milo. "Milo Chen," she said. Milo braced himself. "That was not terrible," she said. And for Lena, that was like saying it was amazing. Milo's face lit up. Lucien walked over and took Milo's camera and put it down. Then he put his hands on Milo's waist, right there in the conference room, in front of Lena. "You just saved my $40 million deal with photos of me making coffee," Lucien whispered. Milo grinned, possessive again, brave again now that he had won. "Told you I own you. Even your Tokyo deal needed me." Lucien laughed and kissed him. In the conference room. In front of Lena. In front of the big screen that still showed Lucien asleep. Lena rolled her eyes but she was taking a photo of them with her phone. "For PR," she said when they looked at her. "We are going to post this. 'Beaumont Corp is a family.' The press will eat it up." Milo turned in Lucien's arms. "Can I post one too? On my I*******m? So everyone knows you're taken?" Lucien nodded. "Post whatever you want. You're mine. Show them." Milo posted the coffee photo that night. Caption: Mine. He comes home to me. - M It got 20k likes in an hour. And three more brands DM'd Lucien asking for Milo to shoot their campaign. That night, back in the penthouse, Milo sat on Lucien's lap in Lucien's chair — his chair now — sorting through Tokyo campaign ideas. "You own me and my company now, huh?" Lucien teased, arms around him. Milo leaned back, freckles bright, lip piercing catching the light. "Always did," he said. "You just didn't know it yet."Ten years later.Milo is 34 now, not 24, not 29, 34, freckles 47 on nose still, but now with more wrinkles when he smiles, because 10 years of smiling more than 24 years of cold makes wrinkles, good wrinkles, warm wrinkles, freckle wrinkles.Black nails still chipped, lip piercing still shining, but now with tiny scratch from Mara's real camera that is now big real camera, because Mara is 7 now, not 2, not 2 and 8 months, 7, real photographer, real camera, real photos, real gallery.Blue good luck shirt still same shirt, 10 years same shirt, now with 15 drool patches, because 10 years of babies, 10 years of Mara, 10 years of Sarah baby sister now 6 with mismatched socks, 10 years of drool, 15 patches, not 9, 15, each patch memory, each patch baby, each patch love, shirt faded, blue still good luck, but now more patches than blue, but still blue, still good luck, forever shirt.Lucien is 38 now, CEO still but half retired, half Provence, half New York, half Taraba, three tables still o
Five years and two months later, August, not June, lavender not real purple but cut, harvested, but smell still in house, in clothes, in blue shirt with seven drool patches that now had eight drool patches because Mara drooled again yesterday on purpose because she said "eight is better than seven, like your eight white ruins."Milo was 29 and three months, still 47 freckles on nose, still 12 on cheek, still 3 on forehead when nervous, but now also tiny line when he smiles, from smiling so much, because five years of smiling more than 24 years of cold.Lucien was 33 and three months, CEO still but now half Provence office, half New York, half Taraba office, because he opened Taraba office for Milo's mom, with photos on walls, because Milo said "my mom needs office with photos too, not just rice and beans."They had third fridge now.First fridge New York penthouse with 150 photos, because Milo kept adding after 300 total, now 350 total across two fridges, but now third fridge.Second
Five years later, lavender still real purple every June, but now Milo knows June will be real purple, no surprise, like he knows Lucien will get lavender dirt on white shirt every June, no surprise, like he knows Mrs. Alvarez will bring rice and beans Tupperware on plane every June, no surprise, tradition.Milo is 29 now, freckles 47 on nose still, but now with tiny wrinkle when he smiles, because 29 not 24, but freckles still stars, black nails still chipped, lip piercing still shining, blue good luck shirt still same shirt, now with seven drool patches, because five years of babies drooling, seven patches, not three, seven, each patch memory, each patch baby.Lucien is 33 now, CEO still but half Tokyo calls, half Provence calls, because Beaumont Corp now has Provence office in stone house barn that was darkroom that was gallery, now office too, with photos on walls and rice and beans Tupperware on desk, because Milo put rice and beans on CEO desk. They have child now.Not baby clien
The email came on Monday morning while Milo was in barn darkroom developing second gallery leftovers, red light, yellow gloves too big, Lucien helping and ruining again, white ruin number four now, because they ruined again in Provence barn.Lucien's phone buzzed. He never checked phone in darkroom because Henri said "if you check phone in barn, I will throw it in lavender," but this email was to Milo's email, not Lucien's, forwarded from Lena, subject: VOGUE — PHOTOGRAPHER MILO CHEN.Milo read it with yellow gloves on, hands shaking, chemical smell, red light making email glow red._Dear Milo Chen, We saw your Provence gallery photos on Instagram, from village lady who posted lavender and blue shirt boy. We love your eye. We want you to shoot for Vogue, Paris, fashion week, 10 days, $20,000, plus cover possibility. You would shoot real models, real clothes, real Paris. Please reply._Milo stared at email. Vogue. Paris. Fashion week. $20,000. Cover possibility. Real models, not babies
Milo's second gallery was not in New York.New York gallery was first gallery, with cute boy who talked to Milo on bench, with Lena who gave him wall, with 7 photos sold, with Mrs. A rice and beans on table.Second gallery was in Provence, in barn that was darkroom, that Henri said "barn needs gallery, not just darkroom, because you have too many photos for one fridge."Milo was nervous again, like first gallery, like baby client, like meeting Henri, like wedding, but different nervous now, because he had ring and blue shirt with drool patch and 50 photos sold, but still nervous, because photographer nervous never goes away, it just becomes warm nervous.Lucien was nervous too, but CEO nervous, because second gallery was his idea, he paid for lights, for walls, for invitations, but Milo said "no billionaire money for gallery, baby money and gallery money," so Lucien paid but said it was baby money loan, and Milo said "okay, baby money loan, I will pay back with baby photos."Gallery d
