Ava

I found it under the big oak tree where I always sit to read. The raven was so still, like it had just decided to stop being a bird in the middle of flying. Its eyes were cloudy, and its feathers stuck out all wrong. When I poked it with a stick, it didn't move, but it made a weird sound—not like a squish, more like breaking glass, but super quiet.

That's when I saw the sparkly stuff. It was in the dried blood around its beak and eyes. Little crystals that caught the morning light.

Miss Hilda would say to leave dead things alone. Alpha would say to tell a guard. But I wanted to know what happened to it.

So I took off my sweater—the blue one with the silver threads that Alpha got me for my birthday—and wrapped the bird up carefully. It was stiff and lighter than I thought it would be. Like it was hollow inside.

Dr. Graham would know what to do. She knows about everything.

I looked around to make sure nobody was watching, then tucked the bundle under my arm and ran across the garden

  • He Slept With My Sister, When I Was Giving Birth   73 Where the Hell Is She?

SusanI recognized the figure the moment he appeared in my doorway. Alpha Robin of Wood Pack. From the way Robin was acting, the protective fury in his voice when he demanded Evelyn's release, it was obvious he had feelings for her. More than professional concern. More than pack alliance obligations. The man was practically vibrating with rage over a common healer.I snorted in disgust. Evelyn was such a typical whore. She'd probably been manipulating him from the moment she arrived at his pack, using whatever sob story she'd concocted to gain his protection. So pathetic that the man standing here ready to fight for her didn't even know she was just using him. Didn't care about him at all.A movement outside caught my attention. I turned toward the bedside window and looked down at the gardens below. Hilda stood among the flower beds, her red hair catching the afternoon light. She must have sensed the commotion upstairs but couldn't come up here directly. So she lurked by my window in

  • He Slept With My Sister, When I Was Giving Birth   72 The Silent Guard

EvelynThe fluorescent lights buzzed overhead with that particular frequency that made my teeth ache. This wasn't really a cell—more like an interrogation room designed to look less intimidating than it actually was. Cole had called it a holding area when he'd walked me here, his voice carefully neutral. No handcuffs. That had surprised me. Cole had simply gestured to the metal chair and said, "Stay put." Like I was a cooperative witness instead of someone accused of assault. Not that I could escape anyway. The door looked sturdy enough to stop a charging wolf, and the walls were solid concrete painted an institutional beige that probably hadn't been updated since the pack house was built. But even if I could break out, even if I could somehow get past whatever guards were stationed outside, I couldn't leave. Not with Ava still here.If I broke out of this room, my first instinct would be to head straight for Ava's quarters, grab her, and run. But that would make me a kidnapper in the

  • He Slept With My Sister, When I Was Giving Birth   71 Why the Fuck Did You Arrest My Healer?

DamonThe shove caught me across the chest, not hard enough to do real damage but sufficient to send a clear message. I steadied myself, noting how Robin's stance had shifted into something more predatory than I'd seen from him in years. The diplomatic mask had slipped entirely. My chest ached where he'd made contact, but more than that, something about his presence felt different. Dangerous in a way that made my wolf want to either submit or fight. I chose neither, straightening my shoulders and meeting his eyes directly."Why the fuck did you arrest my healer?"The words carried across Susan's room with enough venom to make me pause. In all our years of territorial negotiations and pack politics, I'd never heard Robin use that tone. Never seen him this barely controlled.I brushed at my shirt, more to buy myself thinking time than from any real need to straighten my clothes. When I looked up, I kept my voice level. "You can't ask me that question."The response felt automatic, the k

  • He Slept With My Sister, When I Was Giving Birth   70 The Perfect Lie

SusanMy plan had been completely fucked up by Margaret's ego. I watched as Evelyn was led away by Cole, her face calm despite being arrested for assault. The unconscious wolf at the foot of my bed wasn't getting up anytime soon. Damon had hit him really hard. Then I thought - there was no way Damon had heard their argument, right? Because why had he suddenly attacked the wolf for roughly treating Evelyn? She deserved it. There's no way he already knew that was Evelyn for him to act that way.Right?Cole returned a few minutes later, walking straight to Damon. They spoke in low voices, even my wolf ears couldn't pick up what they were saying. But Damon nodded, then looked in my direction for the first time since arriving at the scene. Now that I thought about it, Damon hadn't even looked at me since he got here. Instead, he'd been focused on his unconscious aunt and Evelyn. It made no sense that he'd arrive at a crisis and not care about how his own mate was doing.Damon whispered som

  • He Slept With My Sister, When I Was Giving Birth   69 Arrested

Evelyn"What did you just do?"My mind raced, trying to formulate an explanation, some way to justify what Damon had just witnessed. I was caught off guard, desperately searching for the right words when suddenly Susan's voice cut through the tension."She attacked Margaret!" Susan screamed in complete horror. "Damon, help! The doctor just attacked Margaret!"I froze, caught completely off guard by Susan's reaction. I'd been so focused on managing Damon that I'd completely forgotten about Susan being right there. Now she was screaming for help like I was some kind of dangerous killer - which, from her perspective, I probably was. This was Susan's first real chance to escape from someone who'd been using her medical condition as leverage for weeks."She just stabbed her in the neck!" Susan continued, her voice getting more hysterical. "Margaret's unconscious! She could be dead!"Damon looked caught between responses, his gaze moving from Margaret's unconscious form on the ground back u
