Chapter 1

작가: Sunnys
I finished packing a few light pieces of clothing while Dominic was still sound asleep on the king-sized bed.

On the computer screen, the social media page he’d left open flashed with another message from Vivian.

“I know it’s hard on you, having to sweet-talk that stupid woman every day before rushing over to be with me.”

“Our baby misses you too. He’s kicking so hard.”

“Sweetheart, I never imagined you’d come up with something like this for me. Having her stuck in that cage of the Ashford Estate, taking all those rules and expectations in my place while you protect me like this... I’m the happiest woman alive.”

I stood in front of the computer, my hands and feet trembling uncontrollably.

I was six months pregnant, and the morning sickness was so severe I couldn’t sleep through the night.

Dominic had never come with me to a single prenatal appointment.

The one time he’d agreed to come, he abandoned me at the hospital entrance to take a call from Vivian, and I was nearly knocked down in the crowd.

I looked down at my flat stomach, where a life had been lost not long ago.

Behind me, Dominic rolled over and reached across the empty sheets. Realizing I wasn’t there, his eyes snapped open.

“Stella, why are you up?”

He asked softly, slowly sitting up and wrapping his arms around my thin shoulders from behind.

“Can’t sleep again? Let me get you some warm milk.”

With that, Dominic turned away to get it.

His voice was just as gentle as it had been for the past six months, but when he turned back with the glass, he’d slipped those black-rimmed glasses on again out of habit.

The instant he looked at me through the lenses, I saw the corners of his mouth curl into a sickeningly sweet, lovesick smile.

My heart shattered in that moment.

I stared hard into his eyes, forcing my voice to stay calm. “Dominic, do you love me or not?”

Dominic stiffened for a beat, then let out a helpless little laugh. “What kind of silly question is that, Stella? How could I not love you?”

“Stop overthinking and get some sleep. Our fifth anniversary is just a few days away, and I’ve got a huge surprise for you.” He smiled and reached out to tap my nose.

I turned my head and dodged his touch.

When I first married Dominic, I was just an orphan with nothing to my name. Out of gratitude for his kindness when I was at my most desperate, I willingly confined myself to the iron-walled Ashford Estate, enduring the cold stares and rigid household rules of the Ashford elders.

I believed that if I was patient and obedient enough, I would eventually melt his cold heart.

Until I found a photo of Vivian Lane tucked inside his wallet.

I knocked over the cup in my hand. Warm water spilled across the table and soaked the corner of a book.

Dominic’s face changed in an instant. Almost on instinct, he shoved me hard.

I slammed into the edge of the table and crumpled to the floor, hissing through the pain.

He didn’t spare me a single glance. All he cared about was gently drying off the book, a gift from Vivian years ago.

Only after the book was dry did he seem to snap out of it. He looked down at me on the floor, and through those AR glasses, his gaze softened into that nauseating tenderness again.

“Sorry, Stella. That didn’t hurt, did it?”

I lifted my head, tears finally breaking free, and asked him, word by word:

“Dominic, when did you start wearing those glasses?”

“Do you really hate the sight of me that much?”

With that, I turned and walked away.I heard Dominic call my name. I didn’t look back.My life got back on track.Through my boss, I heard bits and pieces about Dominic. He’d rushed back, but it was already too late for damage control. He tried to hold a press conference, but no one was interested in hearing his excuses or his apologies.Someone charged in and pelted him with rotten eggs.Dominic fled the scene in humiliation, shielded by his assistant. After that, the partnerships dissolved one by one, and the funding dried up.Old Mr. Ashford’s bribery history was dug up as well. The gray-haired patriarch, at an age when he should have been enjoying retirement, was sent straight to prison. The Ashford Estate was seized. The mansion was taped off and sealed. Dominic was truly homeless. He wandered the streets alone and found a cheap motel, but when he tried to pay with his credit card, it was frozen. The motel owner threw him out.He dragged his suitcase under an overpass and curled u

Hearing my name, I stopped and turned. Dominic stood there, disheveled and worn.I stared for a moment. All I could see was the man he used to be, confident and larger than life. How had he ended up like this?I shook my head, hardly able to believe it.“Can I help you, Mr. Ashford?”I asked coolly, my brow furrowed. The smile on Dominic’s face froze.“Stella, how could you leave without saying goodbye? Are you okay?”He asked tentatively, like a child who knew he’d done something wrong and was bracing for the scolding.“I know the truth now. About everything.”“It was Vivian. She faked those photos and leaked them. I’m sorry. I blamed you without knowing what really happened.”“If you’re angry, just hit me. Please.”Dominic grabbed my hand and pressed it against his own face, over and over.“Hit me, yell at me, whatever you want. Just please, please don’t leave me...”His voice was raw, his eyes rimmed with red.“I was wrong. I planned an anniversary surprise for you, but you weren’t

Blood seeped out slowly. Vivian screamed and collapsed, her face twisted in agony. The reporters, handed the story of a lifetime, swarmed Dominic with their cameras, snapping and filming without mercy.Dominic shoved through the crowd of journalists, burst out of the hall, and got into his car.He drove aimlessly through the streets, the footage playing over and over in his mind. The woman he had pined for, had loved for all those years, had played him for a fool. And the woman who truly loved him, who had done so much for him, had been hurt until her heart turned to stone and she left for good.“Dominic Ashford, you bastard.”He slapped himself, hard, again and again. After a while, his assistant called.“Mr. Ashford, we’ve finished looking into it. Vivian went overseas specifically to be with that man. They were together for two years and even got married in secret. After they divorced, he destroyed every opportunity she had over there. That’s why she came back.”Dominic’s ears were

“Get your filthy hands off that tiara!”Dominic was seething. She’d been crying about her stomach, and he’d been worried sick. It was all an act.He strode over and snatched the tiara away.“This is for Stella. Don’t ruin it.”His expression was murderous.“For Stella? Where is she?”“Dominic, didn’t you say it yourself? Your marriage to Stella is fake. It’s just an arrangement. I’m the one you really love. So why are you protecting her now? Have you actually fallen for her?”“Don’t forget, I’m carrying your child!”Vivian’s lip trembled, tears threatening to spill.“I’ve been here entertaining your guests all this time, and you don’t even have a kind word for me. You’re... you’re yelling at me...”Watching the tears pool in Vivian’s eyes, Dominic softened again. She’d been with him all this time without any official status. She had her own struggles. He was about to comfort her when the screen on the wall suddenly flickered to life. The chatter died. Every head turned. The press swung

This whole mess had started because of those AR glasses. If he wanted Stella back, the last thing he should do was provoke her further.Dominic walked to the front door and pushed it open.“Stella, are you home?”He raised his voice. No answer. His heart dropped.Had she really made up her mind to leave? When she had gone out into the rain and checked into a hotel days ago, Dominic had assumed she was just throwing a fit. He figured once she’d cooled off, she’d come back. But the house held no trace of her.It was empty.Dominic called his assistant immediately.“Check if Stella is still at that hotel.”Ten minutes later, the answer came back: she wasn’t.His heart went cold. Then he noticed an envelope sitting on the entryway table. His heart skipped a beat.He picked up the envelope and tore it open.Divorce papers slid out. Both their names were already on them. His, and Stella’s.Dominic stood there, speechless.Only then did it hit him. Five years ago, when they got married, they

“Stella blocked me.”Dominic said quietly, his brows drawn into a deep, tight knot.He drew a deep breath, struggling to control his racing thoughts.“She’s out of control.”He said coldly. He tried calling her.“Stella, what exactly do you—”Before he could finish, an automated voice came through the line.“The number you have reached is not in service.”Dominic fought down a wave of unease and embarrassment welling up inside him.He glanced around the room and said flatly, “I need to go home.”Seeing him head for the door, Vivian rushed after him.“Dominic, what’s going on? Where are you going?”“Come look at the cake I made for you. It’s mango, your favorite.”Vivian lifted her chin proudly. “Stella is so ungrateful!”“I baked your anniversary cake myself. I even cut my hand slicing the mangoes. Here, blow on it for me.”She stood on her tiptoes and held up her finger to Dominic’s face.Dominic shot her an impatient look and pushed her hand away.“Enough. Stop messing around.”“And
