Chapter 3

Author: Sunnys
The reply came almost immediately.

“Don’t worry. We’ve been holding the spot for you.”

“Report to London in five days.”

My nose stung, and the tears came again.

For years, Dominic had kept me locked away at home like a bird in a gilded cage. My one job was to give him an heir.

The miscarriage six months ago had shattered me, body and soul. I had taken round after round of medication and treatments, trying to recover as fast as I could.

I had sealed myself off completely. All my professional skills had been shelved, and I had turned down the company’s overseas offers time and again.

Thinking about everything I had given up for Dominic, I felt like the biggest fool alive.

“Stella Quinn, from now on, you live for yourself.”

I dragged my heavy suitcase out the door and wandered the streets with nowhere to go.

The sky opened up without warning, drenching me in seconds. The cold seeped straight through to my bones.

It wasn’t until I stumbled into a hotel that I felt any warmth at all.

The rain caught up with me. By midnight, I was burning with a fever.

Half-conscious, I heard my phone buzzing over and over.

But I was too exhausted. My fingers slid across the screen again and again without ever hitting answer.

The next morning, I turned on my phone to ninety-nine missed calls.

I bolted upright.

A text from Dominic had just come through.

“Stella, where the hell are you? You cause a scandal like this and have the nerve to run?”

“Do you have any idea how much damage you’ve done to me and Ashford Corp? You shameless bitch!”

My heart plummeted, and my ears began to ring.

Another notification popped up. A trending headline.

“Dominic Ashford’s wife caught in cheating scandal. Ashford family disgraced.”

As if I already knew what I would find, I tapped the link with shaking fingers.

Every photo was of me. Naked.

I gasped.

Before I could react, the door to my room was kicked open.

Dominic’s men rushed in, pinned me to the bed, and bound me tight.

My mind went blank. I wanted to scream, wanted to explain, but my throat was locked shut. Not a single sound came out.

The Ashford Estate.

I was forced to my knees.

“Stella, do you have any idea what you’ve done!”

Dominic roared at me. “You’ve been married into this family for five years. You know the Ashford family code.”

My heart gave a violent lurch.

The Ashford family code had always been brutal, especially when it came to the heir. Not a whiff of scandal was tolerated.

When a transgression occurred, punishment was carried out without exception.

I raised my head, tears streaming down my face.

“Dominic, please believe me. I have never done anything to betray you!”

“Those photos were fabricated!”

Dominic closed his eyes. After a long moment, he placed a cane into his father’s hand.

“Father, I’m sorry. I chose the wrong woman. Please carry out the punishment.”

The thin cane came down hard. My back tensed, and then there was nothing but searing pain.

I was still weak from the fever the night before. My body couldn’t take it.

After a few dozen lashes, my back was torn open. I collapsed to the ground, gasping for air.

“I didn’t... I didn’t...”

I whispered, barely alive. Dominic looked down at me, his eyes burning with rage.

“You still deny it! Seems like this isn’t enough for you!”

The cane struck again, and this time, my vision went black. I nearly lost consciousness.

A rush of warmth flooded between my legs.

Blood.

Screams erupted around me. I couldn’t hold on any longer, and my eyes drifted shut.

A pair of familiar arms scooped me up and rushed me out.

Hearing my name, I stopped and turned. Dominic stood there, disheveled and worn.I stared for a moment. All I could see was the man he used to be, confident and larger than life. How had he ended up like this?I shook my head, hardly able to believe it.“Can I help you, Mr. Ashford?”I asked coolly, my brow furrowed. The smile on Dominic’s face froze.“Stella, how could you leave without saying goodbye? Are you okay?”He asked tentatively, like a child who knew he’d done something wrong and was bracing for the scolding.“I know the truth now. About everything.”“It was Vivian. She faked those photos and leaked them. I’m sorry. I blamed you without knowing what really happened.”“If you’re angry, just hit me. Please.”Dominic grabbed my hand and pressed it against his own face, over and over.“Hit me, yell at me, whatever you want. Just please, please don’t leave me...”His voice was raw, his eyes rimmed with red.“I was wrong. I planned an anniversary surprise for you, but you weren’t

Blood seeped out slowly. Vivian screamed and collapsed, her face twisted in agony. The reporters, handed the story of a lifetime, swarmed Dominic with their cameras, snapping and filming without mercy.Dominic shoved through the crowd of journalists, burst out of the hall, and got into his car.He drove aimlessly through the streets, the footage playing over and over in his mind. The woman he had pined for, had loved for all those years, had played him for a fool. And the woman who truly loved him, who had done so much for him, had been hurt until her heart turned to stone and she left for good.“Dominic Ashford, you bastard.”He slapped himself, hard, again and again. After a while, his assistant called.“Mr. Ashford, we’ve finished looking into it. Vivian went overseas specifically to be with that man. They were together for two years and even got married in secret. After they divorced, he destroyed every opportunity she had over there. That’s why she came back.”Dominic’s ears were

“Get your filthy hands off that tiara!”Dominic was seething. She’d been crying about her stomach, and he’d been worried sick. It was all an act.He strode over and snatched the tiara away.“This is for Stella. Don’t ruin it.”His expression was murderous.“For Stella? Where is she?”“Dominic, didn’t you say it yourself? Your marriage to Stella is fake. It’s just an arrangement. I’m the one you really love. So why are you protecting her now? Have you actually fallen for her?”“Don’t forget, I’m carrying your child!”Vivian’s lip trembled, tears threatening to spill.“I’ve been here entertaining your guests all this time, and you don’t even have a kind word for me. You’re... you’re yelling at me...”Watching the tears pool in Vivian’s eyes, Dominic softened again. She’d been with him all this time without any official status. She had her own struggles. He was about to comfort her when the screen on the wall suddenly flickered to life. The chatter died. Every head turned. The press swung

This whole mess had started because of those AR glasses. If he wanted Stella back, the last thing he should do was provoke her further.Dominic walked to the front door and pushed it open.“Stella, are you home?”He raised his voice. No answer. His heart dropped.Had she really made up her mind to leave? When she had gone out into the rain and checked into a hotel days ago, Dominic had assumed she was just throwing a fit. “Stella blocked me.”Dominic said quietly, his brows drawn into a deep, tight knot.He drew a deep breath, struggling to control his racing thoughts.“She’s out of control.”He said coldly. He tried calling her.“Stella, what exactly do you—”Before he could finish, an automated voice came through the line.“The number you have reached is not in service.”Dominic fought down a wave of unease and embarrassment welling up inside him.He glanced around the room and said flatly, “I need to go home.”Seeing him head for the door, Vivian rushed after him.“Dominic, what’s going on? Where are you going?”“Come look at the cake I made for you. It’s mango, your favorite.”Vivian lifted her chin proudly. “Stella is so ungrateful!”“I baked your anniversary cake myself. I even cut my hand slicing the mangoes. Here, blow on it for me.”She stood on her tiptoes and held up her finger to Dominic’s face.Dominic shot her an impatient look and pushed her hand away.“Enough. Stop messing around.”“And
