Chapter 4

Author: Sunnys
When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital emergency room.

A doctor was already inserting an IV into my arm.

“Ms. Quinn, I’m sorry, but your baby... there’s nothing we can do.”

“What?”

The words hit me like a bolt of lightning.

I was pregnant? How could I possibly...

“You’re one month along, but between the untreated fever and the severe trauma to your body, the baby has no chance. We need to perform a D&C immediately.”

I stared blankly at the ceiling, numb to the core.

Then a woman with delicate features walked in, already dressed in surgical scrubs.

“Hello. I’m Vivian Lane, and I’ll be your surgeon for this procedure.”

I froze. Cold sweat beaded across my back.

Vivian?

“Get away from me!”

I screamed with the last of my strength. “You barely have any training and you’re doing surgery? That’s a crime! And I haven’t signed anything, you can’t—”

A surgical consent form was thrust in front of my face.

“Your husband already signed it.”

Vivian said softly, a smug grin spreading across her face.

“I heard you were so looking forward to this baby. What a shame...”

“But don’t worry. I can always give him a child. You just rest.”

With that, she waved her hand, and someone wheeled me into the operating room.

“Vivian! Dominic! You’ll pay for this!”

I screamed, but it made no difference.

Claiming I was allergic to anesthesia, Vivian performed the procedure without any sedation, forcing the instruments into my body.

Blinding pain tore through me. My vision spun, and then I lost consciousness entirely.

When I woke again, I was lying in a hospital bed.

A nurse was changing my dressings.

“Ms. Quinn, you lost a great deal of blood during the surgery. Your husband authorized us to remove your uterus to save your life.”

My hand flew to my lower stomach.

In that moment, I felt as if my body had been hollowed out.

As if my heart had been ripped from my chest, the pain suffocating.

My fingers dug into the sheets, fighting to keep myself from breaking down.

The door creaked open.

It was Vivian.

“What do you want? Get out!”

I hissed through clenched teeth.

Vivian’s lips curled into a smile. She walked up to me, pulled out her phone, and scrolled to those naked photos of me.

“Dominic doesn’t trust you at all, does he?”

“If he’d bothered to check, he would’ve found out these photos are fake. And that I’m the one who leaked them.”

“But he couldn’t even be bothered to look into it for you.”

Vivian shook her head and tucked her phone away. “That tells you exactly where you stand with him. You’re nothing but mud under someone’s shoe.”

Her words hit me like a freight train. I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe.

“You thought having Dominic’s baby would cement your place as Mrs. Ashford? Pathetic.”

“Take a good look at yourself. You’re nobody.”

The pain was too much. I coughed up blood.

Vivian threw her head back and laughed, looking at me with pure contempt.

“Disgusting. You almost got that on me, you know that?”

I gathered every last shred of strength I had, shot up from the bed, and slapped Vivian hard across the face.

“How dare you hit me?”

Vivian’s eyes flashed with fury. But the instant Dominic walked into the room, she dropped to the floor.

“Dominic, does Stella have some kind of problem with me? She hit me...” She dissolved into sobs.

Dominic rushed over and swept Vivian up into his arms.

“That’s not what happened!”

“Then what did happen!”

Dominic cut me off. “I saw it with my own eyes. Are you going to deny that too?”

“Stella, I never imagined you were this kind of person!”

“Scheming and vicious. I must have been blind to ever marry you!”

“Someone take her back and lock her up!”

With that, Dominic carried Vivian out of the room.

Hearing my name, I stopped and turned. Dominic stood there, disheveled and worn.I stared for a moment. All I could see was the man he used to be, confident and larger than life. How had he ended up like this?I shook my head, hardly able to believe it.“Can I help you, Mr. Ashford?”I asked coolly, my brow furrowed. The smile on Dominic’s face froze.“Stella, how could you leave without saying goodbye? Are you okay?”He asked tentatively, like a child who knew he’d done something wrong and was bracing for the scolding.“I know the truth now. About everything.”“It was Vivian. She faked those photos and leaked them. I’m sorry. I blamed you without knowing what really happened.”“If you’re angry, just hit me. Please.”Dominic grabbed my hand and pressed it against his own face, over and over.“Hit me, yell at me, whatever you want. Just please, please don’t leave me...”His voice was raw, his eyes rimmed with red.“I was wrong. I planned an anniversary surprise for you, but you weren’t

Blood seeped out slowly. Vivian screamed and collapsed, her face twisted in agony. The reporters, handed the story of a lifetime, swarmed Dominic with their cameras, snapping and filming without mercy.Dominic shoved through the crowd of journalists, burst out of the hall, and got into his car.He drove aimlessly through the streets, the footage playing over and over in his mind. The woman he had pined for, had loved for all those years, had played him for a fool. And the woman who truly loved him, who had done so much for him, had been hurt until her heart turned to stone and she left for good.“Dominic Ashford, you bastard.”He slapped himself, hard, again and again. After a while, his assistant called.“Mr. Ashford, we’ve finished looking into it. Vivian went overseas specifically to be with that man. They were together for two years and even got married in secret. After they divorced, he destroyed every opportunity she had over there. That’s why she came back.”Dominic’s ears were

“Get your filthy hands off that tiara!”Dominic was seething. She’d been crying about her stomach, and he’d been worried sick. It was all an act.He strode over and snatched the tiara away.“This is for Stella. Don’t ruin it.”His expression was murderous.“For Stella? Where is she?”“Dominic, didn’t you say it yourself? Your marriage to Stella is fake. It’s just an arrangement. I’m the one you really love. So why are you protecting her now? Have you actually fallen for her?”“Don’t forget, I’m carrying your child!”Vivian’s lip trembled, tears threatening to spill.“I’ve been here entertaining your guests all this time, and you don’t even have a kind word for me. You’re... you’re yelling at me...”Watching the tears pool in Vivian’s eyes, Dominic softened again. She’d been with him all this time without any official status. She had her own struggles. He was about to comfort her when the screen on the wall suddenly flickered to life. The chatter died. Every head turned. The press swung

“Stella blocked me.”Dominic said quietly, his brows drawn into a deep, tight knot.He drew a deep breath, struggling to control his racing thoughts.“She’s out of control.”He said coldly. He tried calling her.“Stella, what exactly do you—”Before he could finish, an automated voice came through the line.“The number you have reached is not in service.”Dominic fought down a wave of unease and embarrassment welling up inside him.He glanced around the room and said flatly, “I need to go home.”Seeing him head for the door, Vivian rushed after him.“Dominic, what’s going on? Where are you going?”“Come look at the cake I made for you. It’s mango, your favorite.”Vivian lifted her chin proudly. “Stella is so ungrateful!”“I baked your anniversary cake myself. I even cut my hand slicing the mangoes. Here, blow on it for me.”She stood on her tiptoes and held up her finger to Dominic’s face.Dominic shot her an impatient look and pushed her hand away.“Enough. Stop messing around.”“And
