Chapter 1

Author: Winter
Days before my wedding, I fell down a service staircase at the hotel where the ceremony was supposed to take place.

Vivian stayed at the hospital for three days. When I woke, I remembered an old movie we had once watched together and decided to pretend I had lost my memory.

“Who are you?”

I kept my expression serious and waited for her to prove who she was. I expected her to show me seven years of photographs, remind me that we were getting married next month, or sit beside me and recount our first date.

Instead, Vivian studied me for several seconds. Confusion gave way to caution, and once she decided I was serious, relief loosened her face.

She rose from her chair. “I’m Vivian Brooks, Ryan’s girlfriend. I came with him to see you.”

Then she took the hand of the man standing beside her.

I stared at Ryan Mercer.

Ryan and I had grown up in the same group home. We had once run away from an abusive foster placement and later shared a folding cot in a youth shelter. After we aged out, we worked during the day and attended community college at night. During our worst week, we survived on food a convenience store was about to throw away.

We had stopped calling each other friends years ago. We were brothers.

From the moment I began dating Vivian, Ryan had disliked her. He thought she needed to control everything and believed a woman raised with money could never understand our lives. Vivian considered him reckless, arrogant, and far too involved in my decisions.

For seven years, almost every meeting ended in an argument. They tolerated each other only because of me.

The idea of them becoming lovers had never crossed my mind.

I was about to admit the joke when Ryan placed an arm around Vivian’s waist and drew her against him.

“She’s telling the truth,” he said. “Vivian is my girlfriend.”

Only then did I understand that one impulsive lie had exposed a betrayal lasting far longer than my performance.

My fingers tightened around the sheet as I forced my breathing to remain steady. The wound at my temple still throbbed, yet my thoughts had never felt clearer.

After a long silence, I managed a smile. “Seriously? When did you get a girlfriend, and why didn’t I know?”

“Three years ago.”

Ryan answered calmly, with the softness people reserved for their happiest memories.

“It happened the night LumenWorks landed its first major contract. Vivian told me how she felt at the celebration. I turned her down, but then she kissed me. I’d already started falling for her, so I didn’t stop her.”

Something tightened hard inside my chest.

I had planned to attend that celebration. An investor demanded a revised risk report, so I stayed behind at the office, expecting to meet them afterward. Vivian ignored every call I made. Ryan’s phone was turned off.

The next morning, Vivian said she had gotten drunk and slept at the hotel. Ryan claimed a migraine had sent him home early. I spent the night angry with both of them, yet never questioned the coincidence.

They had been together ever since.

For three years, I had known nothing.

“We really did hate each other at first,” Ryan continued. “Once I got to know her, I realized I’d misjudged her. Vivian works harder than almost anyone I know, and she notices everything.”

He spoke about her work, the things she remembered, and how she always appeared when he needed help. As I listened, I finally understood how their supposed understanding had begun.

Whenever they fought, I explained each of them to the other. I told Vivian that Ryan attacked first because experience had taught him to protect himself. When I was out of town and Ryan became ill, I asked her to bring him medicine. Sometimes I sent dinner in her name so he would accept it.

With Ryan, I defended Vivian’s ambition. I showed him her work and invited him to her presentations because I wanted the two most important people in my life to respect each other.

I had handed them every reason to grow close.

“It sounds romantic,” I said. “You used to hate her, and somehow you ended up with an incredible girlfriend. I’m surprised.”

Vivian said nothing.

I already knew how good she could be. During our seven years together, she remembered that I took my coffee without sugar and knew anxiety kept me awake when work became difficult. When my health deteriorated, she canceled every trip on her schedule and attended each appointment with me. I had believed meeting her while I had so little was the luckiest thing that ever happened to me.

Now I knew three of those seven years had belonged to all of us.

My eyes burned as I looked at her. Vivian started toward me, but Ryan moved to the bedside first.

“Caleb, are you okay?” He studied my face with convincing concern. “Is your head hurting again? I’ll get the doctor.”

He left with Vivian before I could answer. Alone in the room, I stared at the ceiling while the pain from my nails digging into my palm confirmed that none of this was a nightmare.

The doctor arrived soon afterward. My injuries were healing, he said, but memory loss after a head injury could be unpredictable. Observation was the only answer he could offer.

Ryan and Vivian did not return with him.

I sat alone until I decided I needed an explanation, even if the relationship was already over. When I reached the hallway, Ryan’s voice came through a half-closed door.

“Why did you tell him? You’re supposed to marry him next month. What happens if his memory comes back?”

“It’s done,” Vivian replied. “There’s no point arguing now.”

“There is. Caleb is my family. I can’t do this to him.” Ryan sounded desperate. “We end it today. I’ll take the blame, and you marry him as planned.”

I gripped the doorframe. If he feared hurting me so much, why had he stayed with her for three years?

At the word end, Vivian wrapped her arms around him and kissed him. Ryan hesitated, then pulled her closer.

When they separated, she remained against his chest. “I won’t let you leave me.”

“Vivian.”

“For three years, we’ve checked Caleb’s schedule before having dinner. We could only see a movie when one of us claimed to be traveling. Every time you stayed with me, you punished yourself the next day. I’m done living like that.”

Ryan fell silent.

“Maybe telling him was better,” she continued. “If his memory returns, I’ll keep my promise and marry him, but I won’t give you up.”

“He’ll never accept that.”

“He will. Caleb has no other family. We’re all he has, and he’s spent years depending on us. Even if he remembers everything, he won’t risk losing both his partner and his brother.”

She knew exactly how much they meant to me. That knowledge was why she believed I would stay regardless of what they did.

Any desire I had to save the relationship disappeared. They had destroyed it themselves, and I had no reason to live among the wreckage.

I returned to my room, picked up my phone, and called the number I had saved when the Sterlings first contacted me.

The call was answered after one ring.

“Caleb?” a woman asked, hope and fear tangled in her voice.

She was my biological mother. The Sterling family had found me through old adoption records several months earlier, but I had rejected every invitation because returning to them had felt like abandoning Ryan.

This time, I did not hesitate.

“I’ll come back to the Sterling family,” I said. “I’ll also meet the woman you chose for me.”

Silence followed, then my father spoke. “You mean that?”

“Yes, but I have two conditions.”

“Name them. If we can do it, it’s yours.”

Rain blurred the city beyond my window as I gave him the first.

“Stop all future investment in LumenWorks. Cancel every funding agreement that hasn’t been signed.”

He did not ask why. “I’ll handle it. What’s the second condition?”

“Set my engagement for the eleventh of next month.”

That date had belonged to my wedding with Vivian and the seventh anniversary of the day we began dating. Seven years had consumed most of my adult life, but they would not decide the rest of it.

“All right,” my father said. “On the eleventh, we’ll bring you home.”

One year later, I had finally grown comfortable with the life I had once been afraid to claim. The injuries from the parking garage and the kidnapping had healed. The headaches gradually disappeared, and therapy helped me sleep without returning to the same dreams. My family never treated recovery as a deadline. My mother still reminded me to eat before long meetings, Helena taught me how to navigate the Sterling board, and Sophie reserved one evening each week for whatever she decided siblings were supposed to do. She had missed too many years with her brother and intended to recover as many as possible. My father offered me a place in the family’s healthcare investment division. He did not appoint me to a senior role simply because I was his son. Instead, he gave me a small team and a portfolio of early-stage medical companies. The work suited me.My years at LumenWorks had taught me how easily promising research could collapse under poor management. I understood the pressures faced

I woke on a worn sofa with pain pulsing through the back of my head. The air smelled of dust and old disinfectant. Abandoned laboratory tables stood along the walls, and the faded LumenWorks logo was still visible on a glass partition.I recognized the building. This was the first laboratory Vivian had rented when she founded LumenWorks. After the company moved to Fulton Market, the property had been left empty while awaiting redevelopment.Footsteps approached in the hallway.Vivian entered carrying two cups of coffee. She had changed out of her evening dress and now wore a simple sweater, as though we had returned to one of the nights when we worked here together.“You’re awake.”She placed one cup in front of me.“I bought the kind you used to drink.”I did not touch it.“You had me kidnapped.”“I wanted you to see this place again.”Vivian sat across from me.“You refused to meet me. You blocked every number I used, and I didn’t know how else to make you listen.”“So you hired men

Vivian stopped in front of us, breathing hard.“Caleb, I was wrong.”It was the first time she had admitted it so directly.“I should never have betrayed you or hidden my relationship with Ryan. I should not have defended him every time something happened at LumenWorks. When the accident happened in the parking garage, I should never have left you until last.”Her voice began to shake.“I know this apology is late, but I never intended to lose you. I’ll end everything with Ryan. I’ll even leave LumenWorks if that’s what you want. Give me one more chance, and I’ll spend the rest of my life making this right.”Audrey moved forward to shield me.I gently squeezed her hand, letting her know I could handle the conversation. Then I faced Vivian. She stood in the cold looking exhausted, nothing like the woman who had confidently expected me to return only hours earlier. Her apology gave me no satisfaction. I felt no desire to punish her or begin again.I felt calm.“Vivian, you wanted more th

Ryan’s reminder of our childhood promise left me silent for a moment.I remembered it clearly.During winters when the foster home lost heat, we shared an old blanket. When the staff withheld our meal money, we divided the last sandwich between us. After another family returned us, we sat together on the fire escape and promised that neither of us would ever abandon the other. For years, Ryan had truly been my only family. That was why I trusted him for so long.I also remembered him standing in the hospital and calmly describing how he and Vivian had fallen in love. I remembered carrying his tablet into LumenWorks while he allowed everyone to blame me for the missing presentation. Most of all, I remembered how he had lured me toward the parking barrier before the accident. Those choices had consumed everything our childhood promise once meant.“I haven’t forgotten,” I said.Hope returned to Ryan’s eyes.I continued before he could speak.“That is exactly why I know you broke the promi

Audrey remained beside me with her arm linked through mine. She did not press closer. The gesture alone made her position clear.“Caleb is my fiancé,” she repeated. “Tonight is our engagement reception.”Vivian stared at her as the color drained from her face.Audrey came from a family whose influence matched the Sterlings’. LumenWorks had only recently entered Chicago’s investment circles and held no power here.Still, Vivian refused to step away. She looked past Audrey and fixed her eyes on me.“Seven years cannot disappear because of one reception. You can hate me and refuse to forgive me, but you cannot erase everything we shared.”“I haven’t erased it.”I took Audrey’s hand.“Those years taught me what happens when I give my trust to the wrong people.”Audrey gently tightened her fingers around mine.Vivian’s fear deepened when she saw us holding hands.“You’re truly going to marry her?”“Yes.”“You barely know her.”“She did not spend three years sleeping with the person I truste

I entered the ballroom beside my parents as applause spread through the room.Vivian and Ryan remained completely still.Vivian stared at me as if she were searching beneath the formal suit and the Sterling name for the Caleb who had always yielded to her.Ryan looked equally shaken. His expensive suit could not hide the tension in his face or the way his hands tightened at his sides. Before the host could begin, Vivian pushed through the guests and hurried toward me.“Caleb.”Her voice sounded strained. She reached for my hand, but I stepped aside. Her fingers closed around empty air.“Why are you here?” she asked. “I sent messages and tried calling, but your number had been disconnected.”The guests nearby grew quiet.Vivian ignored their attention.“If you found your biological family, why didn’t you tell me? Where did you go after leaving the hospital? I’ve been looking for you.”“You weren’t looking for me.”She froze.“You spent the past five days trying to save LumenWorks. You o
