Laura’s POV
“I am late for work, I'm going to get sacked,” I thought.
I jumped out of bed as soon as my alarm beeped. It was so loud that I turned it off immediately.
I checked the time and it was already 7:30 am. I quickly entered the bathroom.
After taking my bath, I dressed in corporate attire; a well-ironed tailored black suit and pants with an off-white chiffon top inside.
I put on wine-colored heels because I didn't want to go out all black, and that complimented my looks.
I applied a little makeup just to complete my looks and at least look presentable.
Satisfied, I grabbed my bag which contained my phone and other things I needed, and dashed out of the house to the bus stop.
Cole had rented a well-furnished apartment for me after listening to my story that afternoon.
He even helped me retrieve my stuff from the hotel where I lodged previously saying I didn't belong in such a place.
I teared up as soon as I heard those words. I never thought anyone would be kind to me or care for me after I was abandoned by everyone including my family.
Thankfully I met Cole who completely changed my life. He didn't just rent an apartment for me, he employed me as his assistant in his company.
He is the CEO of Modern Global, a company he had worked hard to build single-handedly.
I got off the bus as soon as I got to my destination. I walked towards the office facility.
I am scared as fuck!
When Cole asked me yesterday if I would like to work for him as his assistant, I was dumbfounded because I wasn't expecting to get a decent high-paying job like that without stress.
However, I discovered that if I am hardworking and do my work well, then there's no cause for alarm; nothing to be scared of.
I just have to be up and doing to avoid any complaints, that's all. In this regard, I strolled into the office.
I greeted everybody I came across with a smile. Some replied. Some waved at me, while some didn't budge.
I entered the elevator up to the 60th floor which is the last floor. On my way up, I kept checking the time.
It was as if the time was moving faster than the lift. However, I got to the last floor sooner than I expected. The doors opened and I got out.
As soon as I got out of the lift, the first person I saw was the receptionist, Nora.
“Good morning Laura.” She greeted me with a slight smile.
“Good morning Nora.” I greeted her back with a smile too.
“The CEO hasn't come yet. But he left some documents on your desk for you to work on. She said.”
Okay, thank you.” I said as I entered my office. Of course! I have an office.
“Hi, Laura. Do you mind having lunch with me during break time?” Nora asked me with expectations.
“Not at all,” I answered heartily.
“Hey, between tea and coffee, which one does Mr. Cole like?” I asked her.
“Coffee.” She said,
“Okay, umm… do you know how he likes his coffee?” I asked her.
“Yes, black coffee with no milk and sugar. Just plain,” she said.
“Okay, thanks,” I said and walked away.
I went back to my office and got to work. I took the documents and began to go through them to ensure they were correct before I started to sort them.
Quickly, I began to read the contents of the documents. Soon, I discovered something. There was an error.
I began to read them one after the other. After a thorough screening, I discovered the error.
A few hours later, I was done sorting the documents. Ready to take them to the CEO to alert him of the errors I found, but as soon as I stepped out of my office, I bumped into someone.
When I raised my head to see who it was, lo and behold, it was the CEO. I felt goosebumps all over my body as soon as our eyes met.
“Good morning sir.” I greeted him anxiously.
“Good morning Laura.” “Are you good?” He asked me with concern.
“Yes, sir,” I responded swiftly, not showing my fears. “I was coming to your office before I bumped into you. I'm sorry sir, I was not looking,” I said and apologized to him.
“It's okay, just be careful next time,” he said to me and left.
He walked into his office while I hastily dashed into the still room to make his coffee just as he liked it. It's time to reveal my professionalism.
On my way back, I heard the desk phone ring. I hurriedly answered the call.
“Good morning, it's Modern Global, how may I assist you ?” I asked courteously.
I didn't get a response immediately from the other end. However, as I was about to ask again, I heard a masculine voice saying: “Come to my office now! Ms. Laura,” he said and hung up without expecting feedback.
I felt a shiver run down my spine.
I took the documents and his coffee with me. I breathed in and out like three times before finally knocking on his door.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
“Come in,” he said.
I opened the door and went inside. He was sitting in his chair with his eyes fixed on his computer while moving the mouse around on the desk.
What could he be doing? This one he's so focused. I muttered.
“I'm here sir,” I said thinking that would distract him and make him look up. However, it didn't work. Soon, I heard.
“Get me a cup of coffee. No milk! No sugar! And the documents I asked you to work on, have you worked on them?” He asked, his eyes still fixed on his computer.
I put the cup of coffee on his table. That was when he looked up. He looked at me surprised.
He kept staring at me without an utterance, then I began to feel uneasy.
Cole’s POVThere’s a moment just before you do something irreversible, a moment when the air stills, when the world slows, and you ask yourself if you’re sure.Standing there on the balcony, watching Laura in that green dress, her hair swaying gently with the night breeze, I felt that moment crackling in the space between us. And the answer came easily. Yes. I was sure. She wasn’t like the others. And this wasn’t a game.“I’m starting to care about you,” I said, my voice quieter than usual, but heavier with truth. Her breath caught, not visibly, but I felt it, like a subtle shift in pressure. She looked up at me with those wide, uncertain eyes. No pretense. No calculated move. Just raw emotion.I wanted to close the space between us. To feel the warmth of her skin under my fingers, to see if her lips tasted like the champagne she'd sipped earlier. But I held back.Because I knew what this meant. And once I crossed that line, there’d be no going back.We didn’t speak much during the r
Laura’s POVThe next few days flew by like a dream I didn’t want to wake up from. Each morning, I arrived early. Each night, I stayed late, not because I had to, but because I wanted to. I was starting to love my job, not just because of the respect or the routine, but because I was finally doing something that mattered. I was useful. I was growing.Cole had become a different person with me.He wasn’t just my boss anymore, he was… something else.More relaxed. More approachable. More present. He started trusting me with bigger responsibilities. I wasn’t just handling his schedule anymore. I was sitting in on vendor meetings, reviewing contracts, giving input during presentations. One afternoon, he asked me to draft a client proposal, and when I handed it over, he reviewed it and said, “Impressive. I barely had to change anything.”I blushed at the praise, though I tried to hide it.But that wasn’t even the most surprising thing that happened that week. It was Friday. The sky was d
Laura’s POVThe boardroom was nothing like I had imagined. The ceiling stretched high with recessed lighting, casting a soft glow over the long oval table made of polished mahogany. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the city, and the skyline sparkled like a sea of diamonds against the morning light.Twelve men and women sat around the table, department heads, stakeholders, legal advisors. Power radiated from every corner of the room. And then there was me. The assistant.I clutched the folder to my chest and quietly took the seat Cole gestured toward, directly beside him. His presence was calm but commanding, and having him close gave me a strange sense of comfort. I reminded myself to breathe.“Let’s get started,” he said, breaking the silence. “There’s been a critical correction made to the FenixTech proposal. I want to acknowledge the person who caught it before we go any further.”The room shifted. Curious glances. A few raised brows.Cole looked at me.“This is
Laura’s POVThe rest of the afternoon passed like a blur. After lunch with Nora, I returned to my office with renewed energy, determined to keep up the momentum. There was still so much to prove, not just to Cole, but to myself.I was halfway through drafting a client follow-up letter when my office phone rang.I reached for the receiver quickly. “Hello, this is Laura.”“Come to my office,” Cole’s voice said , calm, direct, and, as always, with no room for negotiation.“Yes, sir.”I stood up, smoothed down my top, took the notebook I had been jotting down in all day, and headed straight for his office. My heels clicked lightly across the polished floor, but it wasn’t the sound that echoed in my head. It was that same tiny voice whispering: Don’t mess this up.I knocked twice.“Come in.”I opened the door to find him seated behind his massive desk, brows furrowed in concentration. His jacket was off this time, sleeves rolled just enough to show strong forearms. He looked… less like a C
Chapter 7Laura’s POVThe way Mr. Cole kept staring at me made me uncomfortable. My heart raced as I waited for him to say something — anything. But he just sat there, eyes fixed on me, like he was trying to figure something out.I cleared my throat softly and held out the documents."Sir, these are the documents you asked me to go through. I discovered a few errors and thought it best to bring them to your attention before filing them."He blinked once, then slowly reached for the documents.“You made corrections?” he finally asked, voice calm but with a trace of surprise.“Yes, sir. I made notes beside the errors and suggested corrections in the margins,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. He flipped through the pages silently. With each turn, I watched his expression, looking for any sign of disappointment or approval. A tense minute passed before he looked up again, this time with a slight smile playing on his lips.“Well done, Laura. I appreciate your attention to detail,
COLE’S POV SEVEN YEARS AGO It was 7 pm and I was bored, so I decided to go see my friend, Antonio, so that we could play some games and probably go out to chill later. Although I had called him several times, his number was not reachable. I was worried because we spoke on the phone earlier and now I couldn't reach him. Somehow, I felt something wasn't right. I made up my mind to go to his house to find out what could be wrong. His house was just five miles away. So, it was walkable from my house. In no time, I was already at his house. I strolled up the stairs. I noticed the sitting room door was not locked. I opened the door and entered. As I walked, I saw clothes scattered everywhere in the passageway; bras, boxers, shirts, etc. I got to his room door and came to a halt as the sound of moans filled the atmosphere. It was a feminine voice. “Omg! Fuck me harder baby. Go deeper baby." "Don't stop fucking me. Continue hitting me on the spot till I cum…" I heard it when I op
