Hailey's pov

I fidgeted on the couch, my palms sweaty and my heart thudding in my chest. "Jayson, stop being so anxious," I snapped, watching my seven-year-old brother run to the window for what had to be the tenth time in just five minutes.

His nervous energy was contagious. I’d lost track of how many times I’d wiped my hands on my jeans, trying to get rid of the clamminess.

Today was the day Mom and Dad would bring Carmelo home. The mysterious Carmelo wouldn’t be a mystery anymore. My heart raced with anticipation.

They were supposed to be here an hour ago, but there was still no sign of them.

“Jayson,” I groaned as he yanked the curtains aside yet again to peek outside.

“Do you think he’ll play video games with me, Hailey?” Jayson asked, practically bouncing with excitement.

I narrowed my eyes at his back. My fingers twitched with the urge to grab a throw pillow and chuck it at his head.

Specifically at his head. "Hey! I thought I was your gaming buddy!"

Great. The mysterious Carmelo wasn’t even here yet, and he was already stealing my brother’s loyalty.

Jayson whirled around and raised an eyebrow.

“You’re a girl, Hailey. And you always lose.” He huffed and turned back to the window. “I need some real competition.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I snapped.

Jayson shrugged. “It means you suck at playing video games.”

I glared at his back, imagining it bursting into flames. “I hope Dad takes the video games away from you again. And this time, I’m not helping.”

It’s kind of embarrassing to admit I’ve never beaten my seven-year-old brother in a video game. But to be fair, I’m not really into them. Playing was just something Jayson and I did together—our way of bonding. Or at least, it used to be. Now it seemed like he didn’t want that anymore.

He spun around and stuck his tongue out at me. “That’s what Carmelo will be for.”

“You don’t even know him yet, Jayson! He could be the worst!” I snapped, folding my arms tightly across my chest. Who would’ve thought I’d be jealous of someone I hadn’t even met?

Jayson didn’t answer. Instead, he started bouncing up and down and clapping like an overexcited puppy. “They’re here! They’re here!”

The moment he said it, my stomach dropped. A wave of nerves surged through me, sending my heart into a sprint and my thoughts spiraling. I’d never felt this nervous in my life.

"Don’t let them see you peeking out the window, Jayson!" I managed to say through shaky breaths, wiping my sweaty palms on my jeans for what felt like the hundredth time. At this rate, I was going to leave a permanent damp patch.

Jayson nodded and rushed over to me, his whole face lit up with excitement. I wanted to roll my eyes at how ridiculously hyped he was, but I held back—no need to lose any more cool points with him.

“I bet he’s so cool,” Jayson said, bouncing up and down like he was on a sugar high.

“Yeah, I bet,” I muttered sarcastically, smoothing down my red shirt. I really should’ve ironed it—it was a mess of wrinkles.

Then again, it’s a t-shirt, Hailey. It’s supposed to be wrinkled.

Wait… why was I even trying to impress someone I didn’t know?

"I’ll show him my Xbox and we can play—"

Okay, this time I couldn’t hold it in. I rolled my eyes hard. “Okay, Jayson, I don’t need to hear you fangirling over Carmelo every single second,” I snapped, annoyed. Jealousy really sucked. Knowing you could be replaced that fast was painful and kind of humiliating.

I knew Jayson always wanted an older brother, but come on—I couldn’t just grow a pair of balls and a dangling dick overnight.

“I’m telling Mom and Dad you cursed!” Jayson sang, grinning.

I groaned. “Don’t act like you’re innocent, you little twit.”

I jumped up and grabbed his ear before he could run away, pinching it hard. He whined and slapped at my hand.

The door suddenly swung open, and Jayson and I froze. We had been arguing so much, I didn’t even hear their footsteps coming closer. My heart raced as I quickly let go of Jayson’s ear and turned to face the entrance.

It was just Mom and Dad. No sign of Carmelo.

“Mommy!” Jayson shouted, running to Mom, who dropped to her knees and wrapped her arms tightly around him.

“Well, now I’m jealous,” Dad joked, setting the bags down with a soft thud. Mom kissed Jayson’s forehead a few times before letting him go so he could run into Dad’s open arms.

Dad lifted him up with a grunt, and Jayson whined, “Dad.”

“You may have been the man of the house for two days, little squirt, but you’re not too big for me to carry,” Dad laughed, ruffling Jayson’s hair playfully.

Mom stood up and looked at me, waiting. “Well, come on.” She opened her arms, and when I rolled my eyes with a smile, I stepped into her embrace and breathed in her light floral scent that always made me feel calm.

She smelled like home. Honestly, I missed them so much.

“Hey, what about me?” Dad joked, walking over and wrapping one big arm around both Mom and me, while his other arm held Jayson, who was now squeezed between us. I smiled when Dad’s warm lips pressed gently to my forehead.

“I missed you, kid,” he whispered.

“I missed you guys so much,” I admitted, breathing in their familiar scent. Two days without them felt like a whole year.

“Is my new brother here?” Jayson asked excitedly.

His question made all three of us freeze, reminding us of the big elephant in the room—or rather, the missing elephant. There was still no sign of the mysterious Carmelo.

Mom and Dad slowly pulled away, clearly hesitant to answer Jayson’s question. I didn’t ask it, but I was just as nervous to hear what they would say—I just tried to stay calmer than Jayson.

“Uh...” Mom started, uncertain, but was cut off by the sharp sound of combat boots striking the wooden floor, breaking the silence.

Mom turned around, and my eyes followed hers. Suddenly, my mouth went dry as I locked eyes with the bluest eyes I’d ever seen.

They couldn’t be real, right? Maybe they were just colored contacts.

But it wasn’t just his eyes that caught me off guard—it was the tattoos covering both his arms. I even saw some peeking out from under his plain white t-shirt, which told me he probably had more ink on his chest too.

My heart started pounding wildly as I slowly shifted my gaze back to his face.

It felt like I’d been punched in the stomach when his eyes met mine.

Carmelo wasn’t a kid—he was a full-on teenager.

His hair was dark and glossy, making the blue in his eyes stand out even more.

My eyes drifted down from his gaze, following the line of his straight nose to his surprising dusty pink lips, which looked soft and inviting from where I stood.

My heart raced even faster.

Mom turned to face Jayson and me, offering an uncertain smile. “Please welcome Carmelo to our home.”

Hailey's povI sat stiffly on the log, my heart pounding way too fast for something as simple as a dumb party game. Arianna was curled up next to Carmelo, practically glowing. He still hadn’t looked at me once.I pulled my dress down as far as it would go and crossed my arms over my chest, trying to shrink myself into the shadows.Just a game, I reminded myself. But even that didn’t stop the voice in my head whispering, What if this goes horribly wrong? What if I end up embarrassed, humiliated, and even more invisible to the one person I came here for?Was he really that mad I still wore the dress?Bryan, who had been sitting beside Carmelo, got up and made his way toward me. He flashed a grin, then glanced at the guy seated next to me. They seemed to exchange some kind of silent message with just their eyes.

Hailey's Pov I looked at Arianna, nervous, just as Carmelo suddenly stood and started walking toward us. But before he could reach me, a heavy arm dropped around my shoulder, and a wave of strong cologne hit me. I didn’t like the scent at all.Bryan pulled me away from his sister with a grin. “My turn to hog her, Arianna,” he joked.I turned my head and found Carmelo’s eyes locked onto mine. His blue stare burned into me, then dropped to the arm Bryan had around me.“I told you not to wear that dress, Hailey,” Carmelo said coldly.Bryan chuckled. “Ooh, protective brother mode.”His words confused me, but Carmelo didn’t even react. He just looked at Arianna and said, “Do you have any sweatpants that will fit her?”Anger and embarrassment flared inside me. He was making a scene—over a dress.“No!” I snapped, hugging my arms around my stomach.“You don’t get to act all protective when you’ve barely spoken to me since you got here. I’m not a little girl, Carmelo. I can wear whatever I wa

-Carmelo's pov "Have a good time tonight, Carmelo!" Mrs. Cross called from somewhere in the living room.I didn’t bother replying with words—just let out a grunt and pulled the door shut behind me.I knew she meant well. I really did.But where was she when Mom needed her? When Mom was crying, begging for help? When I stood there frozen, watching it all fall apart?Nowhere. That’s where. She was just like the rest of them. Saying the right things, pretending to care—but never showing up when it actually mattered.Only a few more months and I’d be eighteen. Then I could finally disappear from her life like she probably hoped I would. As I hit the bottom step, a flash of Hailey’s blushing face flashed through my mind. It nearly knocked the wind out of me.God.I caught sight of Bryan’s flashy car parked at the curb and clenched my jaw.I promised myself when I got here—I wouldn’t get attached. Wouldn’t build connections. I knew what that led to. I watched it destroy my mom when everyon

Hailey's Pov That silly smile wouldn’t leave my face the whole ride to Cody’s. Carmelo had said my name—finally. That had to mean something, right? He wasn’t as cold anymore.I glanced out at Cody’s house, scanning the front door. What’s taking him so long?Tugging the hem of my dress again—for what felt like the hundredth time—I tried to ignore Carmelo’s warning echoing in my head. I wore it anyway. Why? Because it got a reaction out of him. A real one. One I’d been craving since he arrived.Call it dumb, but I wanted to see if I could get more out of him tonight. This felt like a game. One I might actually win.He was different back there. His voice had changed, rough and sharp—like he was holding something back. And I was almost certain I saw hunger flash in his eyes when he looked at my chest. This was dangerous. But I couldn’t switch off the sudden need I had for him. It was loud. Loud and wild.Cody finally burst out the door, nearly sprinting to the car. He yanked the door ope

Hailey's pov "Okay, so I was thinking about this one," I said, holding up a flowy black dress in front of me so Cody could see through the screen. He immediately scrunched his nose and shook his head. "That looks like something you’d wear to a goat’s funeral."I winced and looked down at the dress. Okay, maybe it wasn’t the most exciting thing ever. Sure, it was plain and all black, but it seemed comfortable—and possibly two sizes too big.I frowned, narrowing my eyes at it. Wait… was this the dress Grandma Marla got me last year? Did she really think I was that big? With a sigh, I looked back at Cody. We’d been on video call for the past hour trying to choose an outfit. One full hour of standing, digging through clothes, and still no winner. My feet were already screaming. At this point, I’d need a wheelbarrow just to make it to the beach house.Cody looked just as over it, his face filling the screen. “If you’re trying to catch Bryan’s eye, you need something that says, ‘I’m ready

Hailey's Pov.“Arianna seems sweet,” I said, just to break the silence. My eyes flicked up to the rearview mirror, catching a glimpse of Carmelo in the back seat. He looked worn out, like he hadn’t slept in days.Maybe he hadn’t.A part of me felt sorry for him—grieving his mom all alone. I wished he’d let me in, even a little. I’m not great at comforting people, but maybe if I’d just sat beside him, held him for a moment, it would’ve helped. Then again… with Carmelo, it probably wouldn’t have stopped at just a hug.His eyes met mine in the mirror, just for a heartbeat. “Plenty of people seem sweet,” he muttered, “but they’re not.”Just like that, he looked away again. Like I hadn’t even said a word. His answer didn’t make much sense, so I pushed on. “You’re riding with Bryan, right?”Carmelo gave a small nod, still staring out the window like the world outside was more interesting than this car.I sighed. Why was he being like this? He had no problem laughing and joking with Arianna
