Hailey's pov

"Okay, so I was thinking about this one," I said, holding up a flowy black dress in front of me so Cody could see through the screen.

He immediately scrunched his nose and shook his head. "That looks like something you’d wear to a goat’s funeral."

I winced and looked down at the dress. Okay, maybe it wasn’t the most exciting thing ever. Sure, it was plain and all black, but it seemed comfortable—and possibly two sizes too big.

I frowned, narrowing my eyes at it. Wait… was this the dress Grandma Marla got me last year? Did she really think I was that big?

With a sigh, I looked back at Cody. We’d been on video call for the past hour trying to choose an outfit. One full hour of standing, digging through clothes, and still no winner. My feet were already screaming.

At this point, I’d need a wheelbarrow just to make it to the beach house.

Cody looked just as over it, his face filling the screen. “If you’re trying to catch Bryan’s eye, you need something that says, ‘I’m ready

Hailey's povI sat stiffly on the log, my heart pounding way too fast for something as simple as a dumb party game. Cody flopped down beside me like he hadn’t just dragged me into my own personal nightmare.People were already laughing, drinks in hand, the firelight dancing across their faces. Arianna was curled up next to Carmelo, practically glowing. He still hadn’t looked at me once.I pulled my dress down as far as it would go and crossed my arms over my chest, trying to shrink myself into the shadows.Just a game, I reminded myself. But even that didn’t stop the voice in my head whispering, What if this goes horribly wrong? What if I end up embarrassed, humiliated, and even more invisible to the one person I came here for?Was he really that mad I still wore the dress?Bryan, who had been sitting beside Carmelo, got up and made his way toward me. He flashed a grin, then glanced at the guy seated next to me. They seemed to exchange some kind of silent message with just their eyes.

Hailey's Pov I looked at Arianna, nervous, just as Carmelo suddenly stood and started walking toward us. But before he could reach me, a heavy arm dropped around my shoulder, and a wave of strong cologne hit me. I didn’t like the scent at all.Bryan pulled me away from his sister with a grin. “My turn to hog her, Arianna,” he joked.I turned my head and found Carmelo’s eyes locked onto mine. His blue stare burned into me, then dropped to the arm Bryan had around me.“I told you not to wear that dress, Hailey,” Carmelo said coldly.Bryan chuckled. “Ooh, protective brother mode.”His words confused me, but Carmelo didn’t even react. He just looked at Arianna and said, “Do you have any sweatpants that will fit her?”Anger and embarrassment flared inside me. He was making a scene—over a dress.“No!” I snapped, hugging my arms around my stomach.“You don’t get to act all protective when you’ve barely spoken to me since you got here. I’m not a little girl, Carmelo. I can wear whatever I wa

-Carmelo's pov "Have a good time tonight, Carmelo!" Mrs. Cross called from somewhere in the living room.I didn’t bother replying with words—just let out a grunt and pulled the door shut behind me.I knew she meant well. I really did.But where was she when Mom needed her? When Mom was crying, begging for help? When I stood there frozen, watching it all fall apart?Nowhere. That’s where. She was just like the rest of them. Saying the right things, pretending to care—but never showing up when it actually mattered.Only a few more months and I’d be eighteen. Then I could finally disappear from her life like she probably hoped I would. As I hit the bottom step, a flash of Hailey’s blushing face flashed through my mind. It nearly knocked the wind out of me.God.I caught sight of Bryan’s flashy car parked at the curb and clenched my jaw.I promised myself when I got here—I wouldn’t get attached. Wouldn’t build connections. I knew what that led to. I watched it destroy my mom when everyon

Hailey's Pov That silly smile wouldn’t leave my face the whole ride to Cody’s. Carmelo had said my name—finally. That had to mean something, right? He wasn’t as cold anymore.I glanced out at Cody’s house, scanning the front door. What’s taking him so long?Tugging the hem of my dress again—for what felt like the hundredth time—I tried to ignore Carmelo’s warning echoing in my head. I wore it anyway. Why? Because it got a reaction out of him. A real one. One I’d been craving since he arrived.Call it dumb, but I wanted to see if I could get more out of him tonight. This felt like a game. One I might actually win.He was different back there. His voice had changed, rough and sharp—like he was holding something back. And I was almost certain I saw hunger flash in his eyes when he looked at my chest. This was dangerous. But I couldn’t switch off the sudden need I had for him. It was loud. Loud and wild.Cody finally burst out the door, nearly sprinting to the car. He yanked the door ope

Hailey's Pov.“Arianna seems sweet,” I said, just to break the silence. My eyes flicked up to the rearview mirror, catching a glimpse of Carmelo in the back seat. He looked worn out, like he hadn’t slept in days.Maybe he hadn’t.A part of me felt sorry for him—grieving his mom all alone. I wished he’d let me in, even a little. I’m not great at comforting people, but maybe if I’d just sat beside him, held him for a moment, it would’ve helped. Then again… with Carmelo, it probably wouldn’t have stopped at just a hug.His eyes met mine in the mirror, just for a heartbeat. “Plenty of people seem sweet,” he muttered, “but they’re not.”Just like that, he looked away again. Like I hadn’t even said a word. His answer didn’t make much sense, so I pushed on. “You’re riding with Bryan, right?”Carmelo gave a small nod, still staring out the window like the world outside was more interesting than this car.I sighed. Why was he being like this? He had no problem laughing and joking with Arianna
