He quickly covered her mouth once more.

“Where did you come from?! What a day… I’ll take my hand away, but don’t scream again. People are going to gather around us.”

She nodded quickly, staring at him in terror.

He was still a complete stranger.

She had gone up to the rooftop as she did every day, only to find a strange man standing there.

He removed his hand from her mouth again.

This time, she took a step backward, staring at him in panic.

“Who are you, and what are you doing here?”

He raised his hands and rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, looking at Ghalia as she stood before him with her arms folded beneath her chest.

“I’m Omar.”

She raised an eyebrow sarcastically.

“And I’m supposed to know what that means? Which Omar? And why are you on our rooftop doing what exactly?”

“Haj Helmy is the one who brought me here…”

She stared at him suspiciously.

Why would her father bring him here?

He certainly didn’t look like one of her father’s workers.

From his carefully chosen clothes to his entire appearance, he looked like someone from a wealthy background.

And what was he doing on their rooftop?

“Dad brought you here? Do you work for my dad?! But I’ve never seen you here before.”

“He’s your father? I was just hired.”

Ghalia burst out laughing, revealing her perfectly white teeth.

“Your father? Hmm… No wonder you’re new. So tell me, what exactly threw you onto our rooftop?!”

The other man frowned in confusion at her strange way of speaking.

“Why do you talk like that? And what do you mean by ‘threw you’?”

She laughed again.

“You’re completely clueless. You’re not from around here, are you?”

“From where exactly? I don’t understand.”

“I mean the neighborhood. You really don’t look like you’re from Sayyida Zeinab. You look like one of the rich kids.”

He understood barely a third of what she was saying. Her expressions and choice of words were completely unfamiliar to him.

It was the first time he had ever heard someone talk like that.

He answered politely,

“I don’t understand half of what you’re saying, but I think you’re asking where I live, right? I don’t actually live here. I used to live in New Cairo…”

Her surprise increased.

“You lived in New Cairo?! Then what brought you here?”

He smiled faintly, revealing the dimples in his cheeks.

“Fate, I suppose.”

She stared at him thoughtfully.

His green eyes reminded her of the beauty of nature, with a distinctive sparkle that caught her attention.

“So you came from New Cairo to live here and work for Dad because of fate? Anyway, I don’t think I’m going to get anything useful out of you. I’ll ask Dad later… Just in case you really are a thief.”

Omar exhaled angrily.

Her calling him a thief had immediately ignited his temper.

“With all due respect, I’m not a thief. I work for Haj Helmy, and he’s the one who asked me to stay in this room because I currently have nowhere else to live.”

“All right, all right. Don’t get so worked up. I know you’re Omar and not a thief. My mistake, okay?”

She bent down to pick up the basket she had dropped, then smiled before preparing to leave.

“I’m Ghalia, Haj Helmy’s daughter. And that over there is my pigeon coop.”

She pointed toward her coop.

He smiled respectfully.

“It was nice meeting you, Miss Ghalia.”

Ghalia placed the plastic bags filled with household supplies—vegetables and fruit—in front of the house after returning from the market.

She unlocked the door and was nearly melting from the intense heat outside.

Sweat covered her forehead after walking around the market for so long.

Finally, she stepped inside.

She took off her sneakers at the entrance, feeling as though her feet were throbbing with pain from all the walking.

“You’re back, Ghalia? Welcome home, sweetheart.”

Her mother, Suad, had just come out of the kitchen, smiling warmly as she approached her, a large cooking spoon still in her hand.

“Here you go, Mom. The mangoes are here. My feet are swollen from walking around the market looking for everything.”

Her mother laughed as she walked toward the bags beside Ghalia, who remained standing there rubbing the soles of her feet.

“Never mind. You’ll be fine. Come on, go change your clothes and then come help me. Your father should be coming up soon, and he’s bringing a guest.”

Ghalia narrowed her eyes curiously.

Her father rarely brought anyone home.

“A guest? Who?”

Her mother carried the bags into the kitchen as she answered,

With long strides that were almost a run, Samar approached her uncle Haj Helmy’s fabric shop, where her brother Waleed worked as an accountant. As soon as she reached the shop, she found numerous people coming and going. The place was crowded. The store was one of the largest and most important fabric shops in all of Sayyida Zeinab. She walked directly toward the front of the shop. There she spotted her blue car parked a few meters away. That meant Waleed was still inside and hadn’t gone anywhere with her car. Whenever Youssef found an opportunity to belittle his son, he took it without the slightest guilt, never even considering that Omar was his only son. “You’re kidding yourself, Salwa,” Nadia said bitterly. “Your brother has been gone for a week. I’m certain your father said something that hurt him. I know my son. Omar is sensitive, and every time he fought with Youssef, he wanted to leave the house. I was always the one who stopped him, begged him not to go, and he listened to me because he didn’t want to hurt me.” She continued, “Why didn’t you look for him? Fine, we all know your father is heartless, but you didn’t even look for your own brother, Salwa! At the very least, you could have called me and told me.” Salwa answered sadly, guilt weighing heavily on her. “I’m sorry, Mom. I swear I was worried about you. And I didn’t just sit around doing nothing. Hassam and I searched everywhere. We went to every relative we thought he might have gone to and contacted every friend we kn
