Chapter 19: Cas’s hatred

The moment Nathan walked through my door, I felt my chest loosen, like someone had finally cracked open a window in a suffocating room. He didn’t say much at first, actually, he didn’t need to. Just being there, arms wide and eyes filled with concern, was enough to break the silence in my head.

I stepped into his embrace, burying my face in his shoulder. His scent was clean, warm and comforting. It wrapped around me like a soft shield and for the first time all day, I let out a calm breath.

“I saw the news,” he said gently, one hand stroking my hair, the other holding me firm. “The whole thing with Liam… Elena, that was insane.”

I pulled back slightly and gave him a tired smile. “Insane is an understatement.”

He guided me to the couch, placing a paper bag of takeout on the table. “I brought food. You probably haven’t eaten.”

I shook my head, slumping into the couch. “Food sounds… surreal right now.”

Nathan sat beside me and took my hand in his. Hi

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 50

Chapter 50When I turned to gather my things, I noticed Alisha standing a little apart from the group, her arms crossed, her lower lip pushed out in the most dramatic pout.“What’s wrong, darling?” I asked, squatting down to her level. She huffed. “Don’t talk to me, Aunt. You got gifts for everyone and forgot mine.”I bit my lip to stop myself from laughing. “Oh, my cutie, how could I not get my own sister a gift, huh?” I teased, tapping her nose. Her eyes widened, hope breaking through her mock anger. “Aunty… did you get me something?”“Yes,” I said, drawing it out just to watch her squirm a little. “And it’s something very special.”“Yayyyy.... Show me, Auntie!” she squealed, bouncing on her toes.I reached into my bag and pulled out the small box. “This,” I said, opening it to reveal the smartwatch and the gold chain, “is for my one and only Alisha.”Her mouth formed a perfect ‘O’. “It’s so pretty!!!! Aunty, I love it.”I fastened the smartwatch onto her tiny wrist. “This will let

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 49

Chapter 49My cheeks warmed in an instant, my joy knew no bounds. I always loved to see the kids happy. Out of all the sponsors in this orphanage, only Mr. Rivers was a regular here. Each time he came, he brought gifts for everyone. He knew each person’s name by heart. The kids loved him so much and now that he was gone, I must fill in that space. The younger kids rushed toward me like a tidal wave of tiny arms and wide smiles. I bent down, laughing as they collided with me, some clinging to my legs while others reached for my hands. The older ones, more reserved but no less excited, helped me unload the shopping bags from the cab, carrying them inside with the kind of eagerness that made my heart swell. And then I saw her, my precious jewel, darting out from the doorway in a little floral dress, her dark hair tied into two high pigtails. Alisha. My precious girl. She ran at me so fast, I barely had time to drop my bag before I scooped her up, spinning her in the air.“Alisha, darlin

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 48

Chapter 48The city outside my room’s window was already bathed in a warm, golden hue when I zipped up the last shopping bag. For weeks, I had been promising myself that I’d visit the orphanage again. Life had been a whirlwind. Patients, meetings and a constant tug-of-war between personal battles and my career, but the thought of the kids there always grounded me. They didn’t care about my fame, my troubles, or the drama that followed me like a shadow. All they cared about was that I showed up, and today, I was going to do just that.I had shopped like someone with a purpose. Not the rushed kind of shopping where you grab whatever catches your eye, but the intentional kind. I knew what each child liked. For Michael, the little artist who could turn a scrap of paper into a masterpiece, I’d picked up a set of sketchbooks and water colours. For Anna, who had dreams of becoming a chef, a junior baking kit with tiny aprons and measuring cups. Even the elders at the orphanage weren’t forg

Chapter 47She stepped forward, raising her hand again, but this time I caught her wrist before it could land on my cheek. Her eyes went wide never expecting that i would do that.“How dare you touch my mother!” Cassandra shot up from the couch, rushing toward me. “Do you want to rub your bad luck on her? Is that it?” Her voice was a sharp, mocking hiss.I let go of Mrs. Rivers’ wrist slowly, keeping my voice level but cold. “You can talk to me however you want and trust me, I can take it but if either of you says one more word against my mother…” I stopped, breathing heavily, not trusting myself to finish that sentence.Mrs. Rivers narrowed her eyes. “You dare threaten me....”I hissed under my breath. “I’ve given you respect, and where has it gotten me, huhhhh???? It’s gotten me nowhere. So from now on, don’t expect it. Be ready for what is to come now.”Her mouth fell open slightly. “You are leaving my house, Elena.”I laughed once, short and humorless. “Ohhhh.... you guys really c

Chapter 46 A moment later, the soft rumble of his engine faded down the street. What I didn’t know then was that in the shadows, a camera lens had clicked. More than once. Someone had been watching and capturing my every move. I had no idea that that happened.I stepped inside the house, my mind still somewhere else entirely, only to be brought crashing back by the atmosphere that greeted me.Mrs. Rivers and Cassandra were sitting in the living room, but when they turned their heads toward me, the looks they gave… made me sick It wasn’t new. I’d seen those looks before. The ones that made me feel like something under their shoe. Like I was some filthy person but tonight, it carried an extra layer of venom.I kept my mouth shut and moved toward the stairs but before my foot even touched the first step, Mrs. Rivers’ voice cracked through the air.“And where do you think you’re going, madam?”I froze mid-step and turned slowly, meeting her eyes. “What kind of question is that… Mother?

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 45

Chapter 45The moment the cool weight of Lucian’s ring slid onto my finger, I could see the change in him instantly. His shoulders loosened, his jaw unclenched, and the grief lingering in his eyes seemed to soften just a little. It was as if handing that piece of his past to me had lifted something heavy off his chest, it felt like he’d finally allowed someone else to carry a fraction of it.He gave me a small, genuine smile, wiped the dampness from his cheeks with the heel of his palm, and stood up from where he’d been sitting.“Now,” he said with a tone lighter than before, “let’s take you home.”I nodded, relieved to see him breathing a little easier. We left his house without much more conversation. He opened the passenger door for me, a small gesture, but one that caught me off guard because so few people in my life had been… gentle lately. I slid into the seat and pulled the door shut, listening as the engine hummed to life. The drive was quiet, not awkward, but still. Only the
