Chapter 16 – Hard drugs in the hospital

Liam chuckled. “You work too hard. I have to make sure you survive till lunch.”

He reached forward suddenly, as if to give her a friendly hug, but stopped halfway. “Sorry...uh....just glad to see you,” he said awkwardly, pulling back and patting her arm. “See you in there.”

Elena smiled politely and continued toward her desk, unaware of the tiny zippered pouch Liam had just slid into the outer pocket of her bag.

Hours passed uneventfully. Elena settled into her tasks, reviewing case files, checking patient notes and helping with a minor consult. A few glances exchanged between her and Mia, but she didn’t let the girl’s smug stares rattle her.

Then, just before noon, the sound of sirens split the air.

Elena looked up from her tablet as several police officers strode into the reception area. The hospital fell into stunned silence. Conversations died. The typing stopped.

The manager, Mrs. Bertham and Director Melrose came rushing out of their offic

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 60

Chapter 60It was Nathan. My breath caught in my throat. He walked through the terminal in his usual calm stride, his suitcase rolling behind him, his jacket slung casually over his arm. I felt a pang in my chest, seeing him like that. He was so close, so alive, yet untouchable. We watched as he approached the check-in desk, handed over his documents, and received his boarding pass. Everything was normal. My eyes didn’t blink, afraid I’d miss a detail. But then... he walked away from the gate area. Not toward security. Not toward the boarding terminal. Instead, he veered toward a side hallway.“Where’s he going?” I whispered. The footage followed him as far as it could, but then the camera coverage ended. He disappeared. My heart stopped. “No... no, rewind it! He wouldn’t just walk away from his flight! He wouldn’t....”The officer rewound and zoomed in. It was unmistakable. Nathan had made a deliberate choice to walk down that corridor. But he wasn’t alone.Seconds later, two men fol

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 59

Chapter 59What I found was a plane ticket bill. The thin piece of paper felt heavier than anything I had ever held. I clutched the plane ticket bill in my trembling hand like it was the last thread connecting me to Nathan. My heart thumped loudly in my chest as if it were trying to break free, and every step toward the police station felt like wading through water. When I got there, Inspector Hayes was waiting, arms crossed, his sharp eyes narrowing as he spotted the ticket bill.“You found something?” he asked quickly, as though afraid I’d vanish before handing it over.“Yes,” I said, my voice breaking. “This.... this was in his drawer. He was supposed to be on a flight.”His gaze flickered down at the ticket bill, and he studied it with the precision of someone who knew that every second counted. He didn’t waste time. “We’re going to the airport, now. If he boarded this flight then we will end this investigation on the note that he left voluntarily but if he didn’t board the fligh

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 58

Chapter 58I left the station with my chest tight and my head spinning. Their words replayed in my mind. If he left voluntarily.... Noo!!!! He didn’t..... They didn’t know him. Nathan didn’t vanish without a trace. He didn’t abandon people. He stayed, he fought and he always protected his loved ones. And if the police were going to move slowly, then I couldn’t afford to waste more time.I was going to find him myself.I went back to his house, the silence felt heavier than before. I locked the door behind me and leaned against it for a moment, gathering strength. His world was scattered around me. Books stacked neatly on the shelf, his jacket draped across the arm of the couch, half-burned candles on the table. Everything looked so normal.... Far too normal. Like he’d planned to walk back in any minute.I set his camera down carefully and respectfully then rolled up my sleeves. If Nathan had been forced to leave, maybe he’d left something behind that I hadn’t noticed. Something the p

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 57

Chapter 57The moment I left Nathan’s house with the camera clutched to my chest, I felt like the ground had disappeared beneath me. My legs carried me, almost without thought, straight to the police station. My heart hammered the whole way, my breath shallow, like if I didn’t move fast enough he would slip further away.By the time I reached the front desk of the inspector, my palms were clammy and I could barely form words. The officer at the reception barely looked up. “Yes, ma’am?”“I..... I need to file a missing person’s report,” I stammered. My voice cracked on the word missing. Saying it aloud made it too real.He finally raised his eyes to me, clipboard in hand. “And who’s missing?”“Nathan Cain,” I blurted, my chest tightening. “He’s.... he’s my....” My tongue faltered. Boyfriend? Friend? The man who owned my heart? I swallowed hard. “He’s someone very important to me. He hasn’t contacted me, not once and that’s not like him. Something is wrong.”The officer studied me with

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 56

Chapter 56My breath caught in my throat. My hand flew to my mouth.Nathan looked straight into the camera, eyes glistening. “I need you to believe me. Everything I’ve done was to keep you safe. I’ll come back… when it’s safe and when I’m sure you won’t be caught in the crossfire of my mess.” He gave a weak, almost broken smile. “Until then… remember I love you. I always have and I always will.”The video ended abruptly.I just sat there, the silence roaring in my ears and tears blurred my vision. So it was true. He hadn’t just walked away. Indeed, something was wrong. That dream I had earlier..... about Nathan being beaten, his whole body soaked in his blood and him calling out to me..... it wasn’t just a nightmare. It was my subconscious screaming at me. I had felt it deep in my bones even before I found this video. I already knew that my Nathan was in danger.A sob tore from my throat. I clutched the camera to my chest like it was a lifeline. “I knew it,” I whispered to the empty

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 55

Chapter 55 I was about to leave Nathan’s house when something caught my eye. It was something small, almost ordinary, but it stopped me in my tracks. It was his camera. It sat there on the edge of the table, like it had been waiting for me all along. My breath hitched. Nathan loved this camera with his life. He named the camera “Carl”. He never went anywhere without it. He’d told me once, “Some moments are too important to trust to memory alone.” And now he says he left but left an important part of him behind....... Oh.... God.... My fingers trembled as I picked it up. It felt warm, as though someone had held it not too long ago, though that wasn’t possible, it's just the thought of him that makes it feel so.. warm. My heart gave a strange thump. Maybe this was a piece of him that he’d left behind, unintentionally or deliberately, I didn’t know. I turned it on. The familiar click and whirr filled the silence of the room. His scent lingered around me.... that comforting mix o
