Chapter 4

After 5 minutes of walking we reached a street which was filled with cafes and little walking along the pathway. “Here it is,” Nancy says. We reached a burger restaurant instead, I looked up and it’s called Burger Heaven.

I make a confused face. Nancy giggled and pulled me by my wrist and went into the restaurant. She went to the counter and there was a waitress.

“If you can’t be famous, be infamous” Nancy says to the waitress. I look at her as my eyes rapidly blinking in confusion. “Huh?” I say.

“Oh you have to say that sentence to enter the bar” Nancy whispered. I look at the waitress and we follow her back from the dining area near the kitchen.

She opens a door and there are stairs which lead underground.

As we walked the stairs and opened the door, I was shocked to see around 20 people singing while holding their beers and there was someone playing the piano.

They were singing to ‘I wanna dance with somebody’ by Whitney Houston. It’s true most of them have bad voices and are drunk but instead seeing judging faces everyone was laughing and seemed like enjoying themselves.

Oh, I wanna dance with somebody! I wanna feel the heat with somebody!” Nancy suddenly joined the crowd and sang while walking towards the piano area pulling me. I laugh at how Nancy seems to enjoy this and I join along while we grab a beer on the table. I’m pretty sure it belonged to someone but we didn’t care.

We sat down in the dining area. We sat opposite each other. “So tell me Laura, are you happy with your life?” Nancy asks. “Why do you ask that?” I ask back. “I guess this is me trying to get to know you” she says. Nobody asked me that before.

Only my counsellor asked me that back when I still stayed at the homeless centre. “Nobody is really happy with their lives. We are greedy. We want more and better than other people” I say as I look down on the table. “I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don’t know but one day i hope I can be happy,” I continued and drank my beer.

Nancy sighs and says “I’ve always dreamt about being an interior designer and I am now.” as she looked away sadly. “But?” I asked as I looked at her. Nancy chuckles after hearing me say that because she knew there is a but coming. “It’s not what I imagine and I realise I lose a lot because I spend most of my time chasing my dreams” she says.

“But it’s worth it right?” I ask. She looked at me and shook her head as she pressed her lips together. “No it’s not” She says softly. We drink our sorrows away as we spaced out. Nancy sighs and suddenly gets up from her seat and grabs my hand. “Come on let’s sing our hearts out” and pull me up.

We sang around 5 - 7 songs and sat down while listening to the sound of piano playing. Nancy looked at me smiling. “What?” I ask. “Nothing. I feel so light right now” Nancy says. She’s definitely drunk.

“Come on let’s get you a cab” I say as I gently bring her up from her seat by gripping her upper arm. As we went out of the restaurant, there was a cab outside. Before Nancy entered the cab, “Wait, let’s exchange phone numbers. We should do this again!” Nancy said as she gave me her cellphone. I grab her cellphone and enter my number and save it.

“Nice meeting you Laura and i will see you again” She says smiling and enters the car. She waved goodbye at me as the cab drove off. I smiled as the cab drove off. I didn’t know I would make acquaintance with someone through social events. At least there is a good outcome from this party.

Suddenly, as the cooling night wind blew my hair covering my eyes I saw someone I recognized leaning against the lamppost opposite the restaurant.

It’s him, Adrian.I just stunned and stood there staring at him.

To my surprise he crossed the road and walked towards me with his hands inside his pockets. “Where is your one night stand?” I ask. He chuckles as he looks down at the ground. “Hey” He says with his husky deep voice. “What are you doing here?” I ask as I tucked my hair behind my ears. “Waiting for you,” He say. Pulling my brows together frowning in confusion “For?” I ask.

Adrian inhales and exhales “Be my secretary” he says. I narrow my eyes. “What?” I say in shock. “You know I'm a HR right?” I say.

Adrian shrugged “So? Transfer job position”. Is he for real? “Find someone else,” I say. “Why should i? I want you,” he says. I went near him and smelled him. He doesn't smell alcohol. He chuckles “I’m not drunk. I’m totally sober”.

“Really read that sign” I say, pointing to the cafe further down the street. He cocked his head and read the name of the cafe “Hollow Bistro” and arched his eyebrows up. I stayed silent and sigh. There is no way I'm going to be his secretary. He’s a mess and wild, I can't be in that type of situation.

I need to focus on my sole purpose of coming to New York: Be successful and rich so I can make my family life miserable by suing them for stealing my Assets or putting my aunt in jail.

“Why me?” I ask and he instantly looks away. He kept quiet not answering my question. He looks a little sad as his eyes move downward and his jaws clenching with his hands still inside his pocket. How can someone be a douche hours ago and looks soft now and not forgetting i literally walk in when he was having sex. A real life porn. I myself never had sex. I exhale heavily as I cross my arm and he turns to me.
