After the money I cost him, I figured I owed him an explanation. I wiped the corner of my lip nervously and adjusted the blazer.
“When I left home today, I…someone who I didn’t want in the house was in it.” “Oh?” “Yeah.” I hoped he had deduced himself that the “someone” was Pierce. After-all he was the only touchy subject in my life. “Just to make sure we’re on the same page, we’re talking about Pierce?” “Yeah him.” “Oh.” He went quiet after that. But his face said the things he didn’t want to say. “You can…ask me about it.” I offered. “You sure?” He had stopped eating and was studying me like a wounded kitten. “I’m sure.” “Okay…why was he at your house?” “He wanted me to sign some papers.” I grimaced, remembering the amount. “He was trying to alleviate his guilt by buying me off. Such an asshole.” I muttered. Carter took another bite of his burger and chewed slowly. He had lost interest in the food but was trying to give me a sense of normalcy, so I wouldn’t freak out that his whole attention was on me. I could appreciate kindness like that. “When you say buy you off, is it about breaking off your engagement?” He asked warily. “Yeah.” Guilt blossomed in my chest. Not at omitting most of the information from Carter but for omitting my daughter. I put the burger down as my appetite waned quickly. “I’m sorry about it.” “I’m not. He was a terrible fiancé.” “If you don’t mind me asking, why did you get engaged in the first place? You guys were a well hidden secret even with the media thing. But he was still seen about with her.” I shrugged, “we thought we could make things work? Uhhh…” I swallowed, fighting the guilt of hiding my daughter and the need to let it all out. “It’s fine, Myra, you don’t have to say more than that.“ he shot me a supportive smile, “You’ve said what you can for now.” “Thanks.” I muttered and went back to eating my burger. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t summon the zeal, which was a shame because the burger was delicious. I studied Carter as he ate. He took a sip from his drink before I blurted the words that were plaguing me. “I had a daughter.” Carter choked, then coughed, his drink coming out of his nose. “Clearly I’m trying to kill you.” I said, feeling more guilt as I handed him a small napkin. I toyed with the burger as I waited for him to dry off. Finally he cleared his throat. “You HAD a daughter?” I nodded, “she’s gone now.” “How long ago.” “A month.” I answered casually. I could see the wheels turning in his head. “You were engaged because of her.” “Yes. I…” The rest of the words refused to come out. I let out a breath, frustrated and looked at the til of the car, willing my tears to go back down. “I lost her, the day, Pierce was with Tami.” “Jesus.” He muttered, his hands falling. “Yeah, with Yvette gone it felt pointless to go through with the engagement. So the document he was getting me to sign isn’t for us separating, it’s so he doesn’t feel guilty about leaving us in the hospital when we needed him.” I sucked in a shaky breath and let it out, placing the burger on my lap. “I’m surprised Jace didn’t tell you about it.” “My brother holds your friendship close, Myra. He would never do that to you.” He said quietly. He placed his burger on the box between us and wiped his hands. “How are you feeling? It can’t be easy to lose a child.” Those simple words did it, and the dam broke. “It sucks. It really does. I wake up in the morning and wonder ‘oh my god, why’s my baby not waking me up with her cries’ and then I remember that she’s gone. I see other women with their babies and I get so angry. “But I know that I’m not really angry at them, it’s me I’m mad at. At how easy it was for me to just go on with life. I’m back on set, I’m doing stunts. I don’t even look like I carried her, you know? It’s like…I’m letting myself forget her to pretend she doesn’t exist. That’s not fair. She-“ Carter’s hands wrapped around me and I sobbed against his chest letting it all out. He let me. Stroking the top of my hair softly without saying a word. When my crying had tapered into periodic sniffs I shifted uncomfortably, now aware of our awkward position. Carter let me go immediately and shifted back in his seat. Along with my tears, were stains from my makeup on his shirt that was supposed to be white. My eyes widened in horror as I looked down. I had completely forgotten that he had placed his burger between us. Now his shirt had a big yellow splotch at the bottom. I snorted, eyes wide before clamping my hand over my mouth. Carter glanced down and cursed, then looked at me, a grin spreading on his face. “You’re laughing at me, look at you.” A matching yellow mark was on the side of my dress too. Carter’s burger was smooched on the table. Soon we were both laughing at the mess we had made. “I guess this means I have to share.” I asked between laughter. “We can do that. But I’m still eating this perfectly good burger.” He picked it up and adjusted the condiments inside. “See, still good, just a little more compact.” After wiping what we could from our clothes we finished the rest of our food, chatting about random things. Then we listened to some unhinged pop songs as he drove me home. When he stopped in my parking lot, I looked up at the apartment nervously. My door was closed at least. “Do you want me to come up with you?” He asked, concern in his eyes. I shook my head. “I’ll be fine, he might be gone anyways.” “Call me if you need help.” “I will. Thank you. Tonight was better than I expected.” “Maybe next time we break two bottles of wine, and squash three burgers?” I giggled. “The less damage the better.” His car, stayed parked till I went up the stairs, stopped in front of my house and waved him goodbye. When his car had left, I let out a sigh, bracing myself, before I opened the door. Nothing could’ve prepared me for the sight.“Oh god.” “Oh god, oh god, oh god” I whispered in front of the mirror, hyperventilating. My skin was flush as I stared at my dress in the mirror, checking for flaws where there was none. “Oh god.” My hair was piled at the top of my hair in a mess of beautiful curls and pearl beads, it looked like it would fall off my head if I moved too fast but I had counted a lot more than twenty three pins as rhe hairdresser worked. She had also assured me it was secure when I refused to even turn my head, so did hannah, and Lily, and Bianca, but it’s not like the hair was the reason for my nerves. “All done.” Madame Camille said stepping back to admire the work of art that was on my body. She smiled, impressed at her own skills before she double clapped and the doors were open. The three women I had been thinking of earlier including Angie, filed into the room all in deep purple dresses and smaller bouquets in their hands. Heidi was holding a little basket filled with dried daisies “Oh
“Mum! I don’t like this hat,” Heidi tugged on my arm drawing my eyes from the painting I had been admiring. On her head was a muffler beanie hybrid that Angie had made her wear as soon as we entered the art gallery. “can you convince nana to let me take it off. It’s tickling my ears.” I glanced behind, where Angie was squinting at m one of the art pieces, not Pierce’s work though. She hadn’t noticed Heidi slipping away yet, and I knew she would definitely not like Heidi taking it off since the room was very cold. I gave Heidi a sympathetic look. “You know you just recovered from a cold, cut nana some slack she’s trying to keep you safe.” Heidi said something under her breath before she returned to Angie’s side, arms crossed and pouty. And I was certain that pout would stay on till Pierce joined us. I knew he was somewhere in the room talking to Gregory, his artisan friend who owns the studio and convinced him to display his art exclusively at this gallery. My patience was on it
The next several weeks were a whirlwind in our lives. From being hounded by reporters about our relationship, to the near death experience at the halloween party. Not to mention all the personal questions. It seemed being associated with the Blackwoods meant the media felt they deserved all the information about my life. I had almost sucker punched a reporter when she asked if Heidi was a charity case. A few times I would catch Pierce with a regretful look in his eyes when it got too much. But it didn’t stop him from taking me to every party he was invited to, or from holding me, kissing me. The whole incident at the parking lot was still a secret. We figured it would be best to drop the whole bomb after Tami had healed and Heidi’s school was on holidays. That way we could dip for a few days to a private beach house and leave the media to run wild. Which it did. Of course I didn’t find that out till we returned. I then spent three hours binging on story after story and of cours
My eyes drew shot and I flinched, waiting for the pain that would come with the bullet. To face death twice in one night. This time I was sure this was it for me. Several seconds past. There was no pain. I peeled my eyes open. Her arm was hanging by her side, a red stain on her shirt that was spreading fast. That wasn’t right. She looked past me, anger and shock on her face. “Leo! You son of a bitch!” She spat, blood spurting out of her lips as she stumbled back. Leo stepped forward, the barrel of his own gun pointed at her. “You’ve done enough harm Ava.” He gritted out. “I’ll kill you!” She yelled one last time, rage on her face and raised the gun again. As she fired again, a large body knocked into her wrestling her to the ground. Pierce! I thought, fear pooling in my body. Sure he was larger than her but there was a gun involved! Another gunshot sounded before Ava went silent. Pierce shot her. I took a step forward, just as he rose to his feet. “Pierce!” I cried in
“Now I want you to really think about every answer you give me. The second it feels like I’m being lied to, I will walk out of this hospital without a backward glance, are we clear?” She nodded again. “I need you to use your words Tami, no matter how much it hurts, even if you feel like dying, don’t worry, I’m here to make sure that doesn’t happen. So… I’ll try to be quick. Uhh…when was the first time you tried to hurt me, like really hurt me?” They was that bob in her throat but she said nothing. I lifted a brow, waiting. When she remained silent I pushed my seat back and rose gingerly. “Wait…please!” She rasped, “I’ll t-alk.” I sat back down. “The first time…it was on set, the…pool.” “What happened at the pool, Tami?” Her eyes darted to me pleading. I gave no sign of sympathy. “the lights went off…I changed the signs in the cave to misdirect you…trapped you… I’m sorry.” “You did that yourself? Or you had help?” “…stunt director… he helped.” I nodded thoughtfully.
When we reached the private hospital, we were directed straight to where Leo was pacing outside a room I assumed Tami was in. I felt a pang in my chest as I looked at the man who had fathered me. The grim set of his jaws, his shoulders hunched as he circled the hall. He looked like he had aged several years since the Dionet party. Pierce pressed his hand to my back drawing my attention to his face. He was staring at Leo, contempt on his face. Leo’s first words to me after ‘hello, it’s your father.’ Was ‘what is your blood type?’ I could hear his relief through the phone when I said the dreaded AB-. Then he asked that I come to the hospital to help save Tami.Pierce had decided then that he had heard enough. For Leo to call for me to save Tami when only few minutes ago, she had tried to kill me. It seemed even funnier seeing as Pierce had suggested ending her life a seconds before his call came in. When I agreed to come to the hospital, my response seemed to stun not only Pierce.
