Eli's POV

My fingers tightened around Adam's fingers. For the first time, I saw him. I really saw who Adam Payne was.

Not the man in suits or on magazine covers. Not the man on the ice or the man whose face was on billboards. I saw a man who was scared of becoming the man that brought him into this world yet still wanted validation from that same man.

I saw a conflicted man.

“It's fine and we don't always turn into our parents.” I said.

“I really hope I never turn into him. If I even have to turn into any of my parents, it should be my mom.” He chuckled.

“And that's why you're an adult now, because you can make better choices and be a better parent to your children.”

The second the word children escaped my lips, there was a beat. It was very short,

but I noticed it. We both froze. There was something unspoken in that moment.

“Yes,” he quickly said. “A better parent to my children.”

I glanced at my watch. “Oh, I have to start going. I have other patients to attend to.”

“Well, thank you for talking to me and thank you for not giving up on being my therapist.”

I rolled my eyes and laughed. “Please, do you know how much your insurance pays me to be a therapist? I need to be able to pay off my mortgage.”

“You are a physiotherapist. I thought they paid you well enough to simply buy your house upfront.”

I shook my head and laughed. “We both really live in different parts of the world, don't we?”

He looked at me with a puzzled expression. “But I mean, you health professionals are superheroes. They should pay you that much, right?”

I shook my head. “But I guess the government doesn't think so. If I was paid that much, I would probably have my dream house.”

“You have a dream house?” He adjusted on his bed.

“Emphasis on dream, because I doubt I'll ever be able to afford it.” I chuckled dyrly.

“Can I see?”

I shrugged and whipped out my phone. I showed him the property on Central Park that had always been my dream to have.

“Well, it's beautiful, but isn't this a little too modest?”

“Adam Payne,” I laughed as I pushed my phone back into my pocket. “Not all of us get millions of dollars for appearing on a five-minute commercial.”

The door creaked open and his mom walked in. “Hey, Mrs. Payne.”

“Hi, call me Vera.” She said.

“Hello Vera, good morning. How are you?”

She studied my face. “Are you…”

“I'm his physiotherapist.” I smiled at her. “And I was just on my way leaving.”

“See you around.” She hugged me briefly and I quickly walked out of the room, but not without hesitating and giving one last glance at Adam as his mom plumped his pillows behind his head.

Several times during my shift, I found myself edging towards, towards Adam's door. I just wanted to catch a glimpse of him. For most of the day, he was asleep, and it baffled me how beautiful this man was. If I did not know the lore around his father, I would say his parents did not barely have sex that night. They made love. He was a love child.

I stood for some awkward minutes before quickly remembering that I had to attend to a patient and hurried away.

Once his mom had turned around and caught me by the door. I had muttered an apology with heat creeping up my face, as I quickly ran off. I found myself smiling through work. I loved my job, but not enough to have a wide grin on my face the entire day.

During my lunch break, I was taking the corner leading into my office when I saw Chloe standing by my door with a bottle of beer.

I raised my brows and quickened my steps. “My goodness who the hell let you bring beer into the hospital premises?”

She rolled her eyes and laughed. “You just need to know how to flirt with the right people.”

I shook my head. “You're unbelievable.”

I looked around before opening my door and showing her into my office.

“I finished from set early today and I decided to come and say hi to my baby brother.” She shrugged as she went around the table and dropped on my chair.

“With a bottle of beer?” I shook my head. “Chloe, really?“

“Come on, stop being so uptight.”

I exhaled through my mouth. “I'm not being uptight. I can't drink while on the clock.”

“A glass?” She wiggled her brows at me.

I folded my arms. “No.”

“A pint?”

“No Chloe.”

She leaned back on the chair. “You doctors are so boring. Good thing I didn't listen to our mother and actually went for arts.”

I chuckled and sat down in the chair opposite her.

She leaned forward and cupped her face in her hands. “What's up with you? You look so happy.”

“It's nothing.” I quickly said.

She squinted and leaned closer. “Don't tell me it's nothing. I know when it's nothing, and I know when it's someone.”

I tried very hard to suppress a smile. “Chloe, don't.”

“Eli?” She grinned and reached across the table to tickle me.

“Fine.” Laughter escaped my throat while I backed out. “I talked to Adam today.”

I immediately saw her entire body freeze, and the smile that was once on her face immediately disappeared. She carefully leaned back.

Eli's POV“Do I see you eavesdropping on patients?” He asked with his arms folded.“No.” I said quickly, straightening my scrubs. “I was just about to go in.”Dr. Broome gave me a knowing look and tapped me on my shoulder before walking away. I knocked on the door briefly and opened with my best professional smile plastered on my face.“Good morning.”Adam looked up and for a split second something changed in his expression. His eyes moved over my face and then they fell to the clipboard in my hand.“Eli.” He said, trying to adjust into a comfortable position.I cleared my throat. “Adam.”Mrs. Payne looked between us. “Well,” she said, standing and adjusting her dress. “I will leave you two to it.”She walked over to the door and touched my arm. “It's so good to see you again, Eli.”I swallowed. “You too, Mrs. Payne.”She gave me a smile that felt suspiciously knowing. Then she turned to Adam. “You better behave yourself.”Adam rolled his eyes. “I'm in a hospital bed. How much misbeha

  • Healing the man who broke me    Chapter 18

Eli's POV“I have good news for you.” Dr. Broome said as he walked into the office. I followed him, trying not to look too eager. It was going to be a ridiculous thing to be excited that there was good news about Adam. I had worked with several patients over the years, and I knew better than to get emotionally invested in every little improvement, especially with an injury as serious as Adam's. Still, I couldn't help the joy that swelled in my stomach.“Adam managed to get to his feet last night.” he said and I blinked.“He did?”“Yes, he was watching a game and I think he did it out of excitement. When asked to do it again, he couldn't without assistance. He's still experiencing pain and we need to be careful about how much weight he puts on the injured areas but his progress has been encouraging enough that he can resume physiotherapy.”I bit down on my teeth to stop myself from grinning like an idiot. “That's great.” I managed to say that flatly.“It is. I'd like you to start the g

I looked down at my hands to see that they are thinner than I remembered. My knuckles are bruised in places and there is a small scar near my thumb from an injury I once got during a game. My fingers flexed against the blanket and I tried to imagine holding a stick, but even in my imagination, my grip felt weak.I curled my fingers tighter and the television erupted. For one disorienting second, I thought I might have missed something terrible. But when I looked up, Jay had scored again. The arena was in chaos. Players collided against the boards, helmets knocked together as they celebrated. The camera followed Jay as he skated towards the bench, his teammates shouting around him and the scoreboard changed again. We were ahead.I laughed. “Yes,” I said, shooting a fist into the air. The final minutes crawled by. Our opponents pulled their goalie and the pressure built quickly. I pushed to my feet without thinking and pain shot through my body. I winced and grinded my teeth

  • Healing the man who broke me    Chapter 16

Adam’s POV I struggled to get myself in a good position as the game started. I saw my number flash across the screen and a smile tilted my lips. It was the pre-game introductions. The camera moved across the players as they skated onto the ice, the arena lights flashing above them and the crowd already on its feet, raising placards and screaming their favorite names into the air. The screen changed and there it was, my jersey. There was a photograph of me in full gear, grinning like I had never known what it felt like to be afraid. Underneath it, in huge red letters, were the words, "We are playing for you, Adam." For a split moment, I forget where I was. I forgot the hospital bed beneath me and the dull ache in my body. I don't remember the ugly collection of wires and monitors that have now become part of my daily life or the doctor who keeps telling me their recovery will take time, as though time is something I have plenty of. I forget that I was not supposed to be here. Th

Adam's POV I couldn't tell if it was the boredom, but more and more often I caught myself thinking about Eli Brooke. What are actually the chances that I would see him again in this lifetime? And we would have such a cordial relationship. He had forgiven me. Right now, that was all that mattered. Not my father and his usual tantrums. Just Eli.The first time I noticed Eli, he seemed to be in an argument in the cafeteria. He was not particularly loud or dramatic. He was just standing in front of the cafeteria counter, his eyes planted on his plate like his entire future depended on making the right decision in that minute.“Does this have mayonnaise?”The woman behind the counter looked at him with bored eyes. Yes.“Eggs?”“Yes.” she said, obviously getting frustrated. He wrinkled his nose. “Okay, never mind.”I almost laughed. He was very soft-spoken. Everyone else in the cafeteria seemed to move like they were in a race. People shoved trays across the counters, yelled across t

  • Healing the man who broke me    Chapter 14

Eli's POVThe drive home usually took fifteen to twenty minutes, but it's the weekend and the whole of the city is either out with friends or out with the intention to get laid later tonight. So it took me almost forty. I sat in traffic and I kept replaying the hotel room in my head: the feel of Marcus's mouth against mine, his hands, and the look on his face when he pulled away. There is someone else, isn't there? The question haunted me, and I tightened my grip around the steering wheel. There isn't. At least there shouldn't be, and even if there was, it should not be Adam Payne.Marcus always had a way of making everything complicated. He cheated on me and I forgave him. We eventually broke up for completely different reasons, and that made it easier to remember only the good parts when I thought about him.Maybe that was why seeing him again felt so natural. It was like slipping on an old shirt and realizing that it still fits perfectly. But when his lips crashed into mine and his
