Eli's POV

What do you mean you talked to Adam?” Her voice was cold and grating. Her eyes were locked on mine so hard, it was difficult to look away.

The Adam? she asked. I scratched the back of my neck. There is only one Adam that we both know. Don't try to be funny, she said. You are all smiles because you talked to Adam. My smile faded slightly, and I cleared my throat. I wasn't smiling because of you. You were smiling because of him. Eli, what the hell is wrong with you? I blinked. What? She stared at me like I had suddenly grown horns. I don't understand why you're angry, I said quietly. Oh, you don't understand why I'm angry? she said, looking around dramatically. I sighed because I knew this was about to turn into a full lecture, like it always did with her. You are sitting here, looking like someone just handed you the winning lottery ticket, and the reason is a person who made your life hell for years. He apologized, I said in a small voice, because even for my mouth to say those words made me realize how silly it sounded. She laughed, sharp and disbelieving, and I knew it was because nothing was funny. He apologized, and somehow that fixed everything, that erased the years of trauma. She got off her chair and started pacing. I didn't have an answer to say to her because anything I said could make her angrier. You know what that boy did to you? Man, I corrected quietly, and she flipped around so quick, her hair almost got in her mouth. Huh? He's a man now. She scoffed and rolled her eyes. Oh, because he wears Prada suits now, or designer loafers. I stared at her, not saying another word, or because he does interviews, he gets photographed for magazines, and he has millions of followers and women who scream when he walks into restaurants. That's not what I meant. That's apparently enough for you. He's a changed person. What changed? And how do you know he's changed? I've been working with him for weeks. She went still. You never told me this. I didn't know how, because I knew you were going to react like this. Don't even make this about me. But it's the truth. Look at how you're reacting because I said I talked to him. You didn't know how to tell your only sibling that you're spending every day with a guy who bullied you. He isn't bullying me. Wow. Wait, just listen to me. No, she cut in. You listen to me. Her voice cracked. You spent years after years trying to get over what he and his members, his friends, did to you. You couldn't watch hockey. You froze when someone raised their voice at you. You stuttered because you almost forgot how to speak and how to be comfortable with hearing your own voice. You had to go to therapy because of him. My throat tightened. So don't sit here. I watched the brother that I know turn into someone else I could barely recognize. So you don't get to sit there and tell me that he said sorry, and because you spent a couple weeks with him, he is suddenly a different person. He is. You don't know that, she said, hitting on every single word. She shook her head. You are thinking with your dick. My mouth fell open. What? You heard me. I've seen his recent pictures. You are attracted to him. He's a hot man. I get it, and that is why you have suddenly lost your sense of reasoning. This isn't about sex, I said quietly. Oh? Oh, it's not? You want to tell me that you have never imagined him bending you over? You haven't? I blinked, because I had, and I had done more than that. I had touched myself to the sound of his voice. I had touched myself to interviews of him, and the subtle brush of his skin against mine has almost made me feral. He's a changed person, and I understand why you would not believe that, but we actually talked. He makes me feel comfortable. He listens when I talk. He doesn't laugh when I stutter. He could have been cruel and made jokes and treated me like I was still that kid in high school, but he doesn't. Because he's not in the position to you. He is physiotherapist. You are helping him get back on his feet. Why would he treat you wrongly? Tell me. I looked at her because I knew that she had a point. People change. The only thing that changed about that man is that he spies grew thicker, he got six-pack, maybe had a hairline surgery, and his jaws got more chiseled. She grabbed her purse. I should... believing. But your friendly spent. I have work to do, she cut in, and I knew that she was angry, and rightfully so. Oh, she turned around, and my stomach dropped because there was a look on her face. There's something else, what? I ran into someone earlier today who she exhalated. Marcus. Everything in me suddenly went still and my smile disappeared. She watched my face. Your ex is in town. Don't spend too much time thinking about the hockey player who can't walk.

Eli's POV“Do I see you eavesdropping on patients?” He asked with his arms folded.“No.” I said quickly, straightening my scrubs. “I was just about to go in.”Dr. Broome gave me a knowing look and tapped me on my shoulder before walking away. I knocked on the door briefly and opened with my best professional smile plastered on my face.“Good morning.”Adam looked up and for a split second something changed in his expression. His eyes moved over my face and then they fell to the clipboard in my hand.“Eli.” He said, trying to adjust into a comfortable position.I cleared my throat. “Adam.”Mrs. Payne looked between us. “Well,” she said, standing and adjusting her dress. “I will leave you two to it.”She walked over to the door and touched my arm. “It's so good to see you again, Eli.”I swallowed. “You too, Mrs. Payne.”She gave me a smile that felt suspiciously knowing. Then she turned to Adam. “You better behave yourself.”Adam rolled his eyes. “I'm in a hospital bed. How much misbeha

Eli's POV“I have good news for you.” Dr. Broome said as he walked into the office. I followed him, trying not to look too eager. It was going to be a ridiculous thing to be excited that there was good news about Adam. I had worked with several patients over the years, and I knew better than to get emotionally invested in every little improvement, especially with an injury as serious as Adam's. Still, I couldn't help the joy that swelled in my stomach.“Adam managed to get to his feet last night.” he said and I blinked.“He did?”“Yes, he was watching a game and I think he did it out of excitement. When asked to do it again, he couldn't without assistance. He's still experiencing pain and we need to be careful about how much weight he puts on the injured areas but his progress has been encouraging enough that he can resume physiotherapy.”I bit down on my teeth to stop myself from grinning like an idiot. “That's great.” I managed to say that flatly.“It is. I'd like you to start the g

I looked down at my hands to see that they are thinner than I remembered. My knuckles are bruised in places and there is a small scar near my thumb from an injury I once got during a game. My fingers flexed against the blanket and I tried to imagine holding a stick, but even in my imagination, my grip felt weak.I curled my fingers tighter and the television erupted. For one disorienting second, I thought I might have missed something terrible. But when I looked up, Jay had scored again. The arena was in chaos. Players collided against the boards, helmets knocked together as they celebrated. The camera followed Jay as he skated towards the bench, his teammates shouting around him and the scoreboard changed again. We were ahead.I laughed. “Yes,” I said, shooting a fist into the air. The final minutes crawled by. Our opponents pulled their goalie and the pressure built quickly. I pushed to my feet without thinking and pain shot through my body. I winced and grinded my teeth

  • Healing the man who broke me    Chapter 16

Adam’s POV I struggled to get myself in a good position as the game started. I saw my number flash across the screen and a smile tilted my lips. It was the pre-game introductions. The camera moved across the players as they skated onto the ice, the arena lights flashing above them and the crowd already on its feet, raising placards and screaming their favorite names into the air. The screen changed and there it was, my jersey. There was a photograph of me in full gear, grinning like I had never known what it felt like to be afraid. Underneath it, in huge red letters, were the words, "We are playing for you, Adam." For a split moment, I forget where I was. I forgot the hospital bed beneath me and the dull ache in my body. I don't remember the ugly collection of wires and monitors that have now become part of my daily life or the doctor who keeps telling me their recovery will take time, as though time is something I have plenty of. I forget that I was not supposed to be here. Th

Adam's POV I couldn't tell if it was the boredom, but more and more often I caught myself thinking about Eli Brooke. What are actually the chances that I would see him again in this lifetime? And we would have such a cordial relationship. He had forgiven me. Right now, that was all that mattered. Not my father and his usual tantrums. Just Eli.The first time I noticed Eli, he seemed to be in an argument in the cafeteria. He was not particularly loud or dramatic. He was just standing in front of the cafeteria counter, his eyes planted on his plate like his entire future depended on making the right decision in that minute.“Does this have mayonnaise?”The woman behind the counter looked at him with bored eyes. Yes.“Eggs?”“Yes.” she said, obviously getting frustrated. He wrinkled his nose. “Okay, never mind.”I almost laughed. He was very soft-spoken. Everyone else in the cafeteria seemed to move like they were in a race. People shoved trays across the counters, yelled across t

  • Healing the man who broke me    Chapter 14

Eli's POVThe drive home usually took fifteen to twenty minutes, but it's the weekend and the whole of the city is either out with friends or out with the intention to get laid later tonight. So it took me almost forty. I sat in traffic and I kept replaying the hotel room in my head: the feel of Marcus's mouth against mine, his hands, and the look on his face when he pulled away. There is someone else, isn't there? The question haunted me, and I tightened my grip around the steering wheel. There isn't. At least there shouldn't be, and even if there was, it should not be Adam Payne.Marcus always had a way of making everything complicated. He cheated on me and I forgave him. We eventually broke up for completely different reasons, and that made it easier to remember only the good parts when I thought about him.Maybe that was why seeing him again felt so natural. It was like slipping on an old shirt and realizing that it still fits perfectly. But when his lips crashed into mine and his
