Eli's POV Hockey paid well, and I knew Adam Payne was rich but it never really occurred to me how rich he was. He was wealthy, and surprisingly had great taste. As I walked into the house, the first thing that caught my attention were the polished marble floors, like someone had gone on their knees and scraped every inch of them. There was an enormous chandelier hanging over the entrance, and the walls were covered with expensive-looking paintings. The furniture probably cost more than my entire apartment. Even the staircase was unnecessarily grand.I stood around, my lips slightly parted as I looked at the house.“Are you going to stand there all day?”Adam's voice interrupted my thoughts. I blinked and looked down to see Adam rolling his wheelchair towards me. He had a glint in his eyes.“Sorry,” I chuckled nervously.“Don't apologize,” he waved. “It's never a crime to admire my house. Everybody does.” He said and I rolled my eyes.“You're so proud, and I wasn't admiring it.”

Adam's POV Dr. Broome lifted my legs and watched my reaction carefully. He asked if I was hurting anywhere and if I could move without assistance. It was hard. Pain shot through my spine and my hips, but I nodded because I was sick and tired of this place.Being confined to this hospital room made my condition even worse. I couldn't do half the things I used to do. All I did was stay in bed and stare blankly at the wall. Every week there was a new fan base or organisation coming to pay me a visit. I appreciated their efforts but every social media post or blog made me feel more terrible about my condition. When I could, I tuned in to watch a match but I was tired of watching my team from bed. Even though I couldn't be on the ice right now because I had not regained my legs, I needed to be on the field, even if on a wheelchair. So I nodded when Dr. Broome asked. I gritted my teeth when the pain came and said there was no pain and I could move to the best of my abilities. There wa

Eli's POV I stared at Adam for a while and let out a little laugh while shaking my head. There was no way he was really asking me this. He stared at me and I glared back. The expression on his face was serious and that made the laughter cease from my throat. “Why do you care?” “Because it doesn't make sense that you work so hard and have to deal with money problems, especially for something as basic as shelter.” “Ouch,” I muttered under my breath. “Well, I don't know what the house I want costs because why would I be looking at that when I have barely been able to pay for my mortgage?” “Fair enough. Do you like where you stay currently?” “Adam, let's focus on why I'm here. You, your physiotherapy, your legs.” “My legs are fine or at least they will be,” he said. “You are being optimistic.” I looked around. “Did something change? What happened?” “Nothing.” “Come on, Eli. Be serious.” “Well, Adam.” I glanced at my watch. “I have other patients to attend to and I a

Eli's POV“Do I see you eavesdropping on patients?” He asked with his arms folded.“No.” I said quickly, straightening my scrubs. “I was just about to go in.”Dr. Broome gave me a knowing look and tapped me on my shoulder before walking away. I knocked on the door briefly and opened with my best professional smile plastered on my face.“Good morning.”Adam looked up and for a split second something changed in his expression. His eyes moved over my face and then they fell to the clipboard in my hand.“Eli.” He said, trying to adjust into a comfortable position.I cleared my throat. “Adam.”Mrs. Payne looked between us. “Well,” she said, standing and adjusting her dress. “I will leave you two to it.”She walked over to the door and touched my arm. “It's so good to see you again, Eli.”I swallowed. “You too, Mrs. Payne.”She gave me a smile that felt suspiciously knowing. Then she turned to Adam. “You better behave yourself.”Adam rolled his eyes. “I'm in a hospital bed. How much misbeha

Eli's POV“I have good news for you.” Dr. Broome said as he walked into the office. I followed him, trying not to look too eager. It was going to be a ridiculous thing to be excited that there was good news about Adam. I had worked with several patients over the years, and I knew better than to get emotionally invested in every little improvement, especially with an injury as serious as Adam's. Still, I couldn't help the joy that swelled in my stomach.“Adam managed to get to his feet last night.” he said and I blinked.“He did?”“Yes, he was watching a game and I think he did it out of excitement. When asked to do it again, he couldn't without assistance. He's still experiencing pain and we need to be careful about how much weight he puts on the injured areas but his progress has been encouraging enough that he can resume physiotherapy.”I bit down on my teeth to stop myself from grinning like an idiot. “That's great.” I managed to say that flatly.“It is. I'd like you to start the g

I looked down at my hands to see that they are thinner than I remembered. My knuckles are bruised in places and there is a small scar near my thumb from an injury I once got during a game. My fingers flexed against the blanket and I tried to imagine holding a stick, but even in my imagination, my grip felt weak.I curled my fingers tighter and the television erupted. For one disorienting second, I thought I might have missed something terrible. But when I looked up, Jay had scored again. The arena was in chaos. Players collided against the boards, helmets knocked together as they celebrated. The camera followed Jay as he skated towards the bench, his teammates shouting around him and the scoreboard changed again. We were ahead.I laughed. “Yes,” I said, shooting a fist into the air. The final minutes crawled by. Our opponents pulled their goalie and the pressure built quickly. I pushed to my feet without thinking and pain shot through my body. I winced and grinded my teeth
